@Alster12345678 Never that great? Mike Portnoy was an incredible drummer, much less one of the best metal drummers if not THE best. Mike Mangini is even more technically skilled, but Portnoy is much more heavy influenced. Either way, the Rev was also a great drummer but still not anywhere near as great or as diverse as Portnoy. Portnoy came from doing Beatles covers with Paul Gilbert to these heavier Dream Theater songs with some intense double bass and hand-work.

When you're playing such melodically complex music, it makes sense to have to different choices of snares, hats, chinas, even bass drums (their new drummer uses 3 different bass drum sizes on his kit, all reachable from the one throne) to best suit whatever is going on at the music at each point.

mike portnoy truly is one of the absolute best if not the best modern drummer... his understanding of the instrument and technique is so crazy vast... but the brilliance he has displayed has been, in part, to the band Dream Theater... Im certain they all make each other better and a big part of his ability to create music the way he has comes from the astounding musical effort these guys put in together.

Maybe had he put his focus primarily of Dream Theater they would not have become "stale" as he so eloquently stated. Personally, I am happy to see Mike Portnoy leave Dream Theater. Mike Mangini is a breath of fresh air to one of the most amazing bands to grace our ears.

@Fourmalletz I like Zeppelin, but I'd take Neil Peart over Bonham any day of the week. And Bonham WAS around when Neil was doing his thing. So there's no excuse for him "not being around to play this kind of thing". Bonham wasn't a technical drummer like Portnoy or Peart. He was a more fluid drummer and had a very different style than these guys. This here would not be up his alley.
