Today's caravanserais are the rest stops along major highways. Think New Jersey Turnpike (bathrooms, convenience store, fast food restaurant, gas station). There are even places along the grass on the edge of the rest stop to walk the dog (and for the dogs to relieve themselves). It is not as romantic as the ancient caravanserais, of course.
Beautiful building. I'd love to see it restored.
