I see some people arguing about the stat here. For the record, Smyth scored this hat trick in 2:01, which did beat Gretzky's Oilers' record of 2:12.

Also, for the record, the fastest hat trick was not 8 seconds, that's ridiculous, it was 21 seconds, in 1952 by Chicago's Bill Mosienko against the Rangers. Which I suppose is also pretty ridiculous haha.

It was a matter of principle. Ryan Smyth was the heart and soul of the Oilers for a decade. He gave Edmonton a HUGE hometown discount for a number of years and when his contract expired he still offered to sign with them for 3 million less than what a few other teams offered. That should have been more than enough incentive, but Kevin Lowe got greedy; thinking that Smyth would eventually sign in desperation.
