Oh I see -Thanks for info. Was that natural or from drinking?. Only wondering but still sad cos his band (THE SWEET) ripped in the seventies like lightening! -and the 'ballroom Blitz' song was dynamite. Oops tha reminds me of another song by the band MUD called DYNAMITE
I've posted a documentary, "Don't Leave Me This Way". This was Brian's last TV appearance. Here you will see what 20 some years of drinking, has done to Brian.
It's very sad to watch, but at the same time you'll get a chance to see some "Sweet" stuff.
I liked it better when they had long hair and silver clothes - bring back glam rock! However, this is a BEAUTIFUL and heartfelt song - it's got me through a breakup or two!
The rot had already set in when Oxygen came along. Brian is still absolutely beatiful even though he is well into booze at this stage...so much crap going on - bad feeling among the band members, Andy trying his best to oust Brian, writing songs with Steve that are too high for Brian etc... it makes me sick when I see those clips of Andy an Mick chumming it with the Aussies, saying that there was nothing personal about Brian's departure etc...Sweet wouldn't have made it without him. RIP BC
rock never died..it's alive and well..and in the 70's disco only lasted about 6 yrs..and believe it or not , the funky sounds of disco are based on early r n b..this was a great song for them,,they matured with great musicianship and songwriting, and lost all their tinny bopper fans..that's why the end came quickly..i can't belive how much their appearance changed from 76-78...they looked so young during the fox on the run era..here they look like aging rockers, only 2 yrs later . great band !

@liverpoolpictorial You're absolutely right. I couldn't have said it any better. SWEET was definitely one of the VERY best bands. I'd like to thank everybody who has ever posted The Sweet here on Youtube.
Connolly was a talented man, he had a great singing voice....after having several heart attacks he eventually died of liver failure..all caused by his alcohol abuse - what a waste!
Brian being fond of the booze, and even fonder of the ladies(!) was set upon by a group of men who accused him of trying to steal their girlfriends. Given Brian's beautiful looks - jealousy probably took over. He had his throat stamped on. (thugs were heard saying "you'll never sing again") his voice range was never the same again - and because of it, the band couldn't support The Who in London which would've changed everything
I LOVE STEVE! his constant joking about the fake playing is hillarious. i also love the rest...but why oh why did brian get that dorothy hamil hair-do?

I am moved up to the tears... returned thirteen years old in few moments... infinite graces... big!!!!!..Te lo dico in italiano, questo traduttore perde qualche colpo,se sai l'italiano bene,altrimenti...grazie infinite!!!!Un'emozione bellissima...ciao
I was confused by the sound of this at first, it was so obviously the studio version, but I could keep hearing sounds on the drum and bass that were "different". The give away is at the end. After the track ends there is "leakage" of live drums and it is that that you can hear over the backing track.
Anyway who is complaining? Awesome track, awesome band, and Awesome Drummer.
Hey 6PBP6 . . I didn't hear anything different from the studio version. I think the drums at the end are because during the lipsynch they are going through the motions (no cables outta the guitars/mic). However, drums are too loud not to be heard, even without amps.
Well I can hear it - it couldn't stand out more if it was sub-titled! Some of the drums sound duller, they are quite "bright" on the studio recording, but everything else is so spot on that they were obviously miming to the track.
It is definitely "live" drum sound on top of the studio track, you can tell by the extra couple of beats at the end of the track aswell. I don't think the bass is any different when I listen again. It is the "live" drum sound you can here over the track as you say.

I never understood why people think this was an ELO song? I Loved The Sweet and ELO and to me they had Distinctly different sounds, I mean where's the strings and choir that ELO used at this period?. R.I.P. Brian Conolly what a great vocalist!
So sanktalucia66... what you are saying is that the lead singer of "The Sweet" sounds like Jeff Lynne? While there might be some similarities in singing voices I suspect thats where the similarities end. I'd hate to have to find similarities between Glam Rock, which was The Sweet's trademark, and Symphonic Rock which I think describes ELO best.
It's ONLY in this song Sweet sounds like ELO. Nothing else. And no, it's not only the voices, it's the music as well, it's diffucult to say exactly what sounds the same, it's not the guitar but maybe the bass and synt. I do adore both Sweet and ELO so it's absolutely no criticism.
To me it's like comparing Apples to Oranges. The styles of each group is so vastly different in so many ways. One of the things I always loved about ELO was their use of Moog Synthesizers and philharmonic orchestra's. Neither were, to my knowledge, used much by The Sweet. In any event Rock On!
Yeah. When they recorded this in France they were kind of experimenting with an ELO-type sound so you're right. It does sound alot similar. But still awesome!
Sweet had a sound engineer, Reinhold Mack who left to record with ELO, then Queen. You can hear his musical trademark on Sweet's songs. Sweet was one of the first in starting this vocal in-sync harmonies glam-rock music. Then Reinhold continued on and gave us ELO and Queen respectively, each major icons of the 70's
As to question#2, look at the year, 1978. Sweet, like the Stones, Kinks, Rod the Mod et al, was trying to cash in on disco, hence the scarf on Brian. Luved this song in High School.
People today need to heed the lyrics of songs like these, someone feeling this way get looked down upon as if there's something wrong with them feeling thatw way, classed as having some sort of illness! Love depvrivation is indeed like a lack of oxygen, one of the fundamentals, for the soul!
Everyone was cutting their hair. Queen, Rush, even Led Zep. The late 70's early 80's was a nightmare for heavy rock fans. Both fashionably and muscially. Thank god Iron Maiden and the rest of the British New Wave of Heavy Metal showed up in the 80's to kick everyone in the arse.
I saw Sweet perform "Love Is Like Oxygen" at the Philidelphia Spectrum right after it's release. That was an awesome show!!! Sweet were at the top of their game then. They were an original...no other band could compare to them! This video brings back memories of a better time...MANY THANKS!!!!
By this time, Brian had gotten in a fight backstage and injured his throat. He was never as good after that (they say) and he turned into a bad drunk anyway.
Steve Priest is jaded by the whole experience, he hasn't play with them since 82 (except a few reunion shows) and he quit playing music by 1990. Drummer died of Cancer in 1993?
Love is like Oxygen! You get too much you get too high, not enough and you're gonna die. LOVE gets you high! Excellent lyrics and fabulous video. Thanks for posting this video!!

I'll tell him that when I next see him.

two questions:
Who did the deep bass/baritone harmonies?
and
why during this time period, did brian start wearing scarves around his neck?
tamisyn 3 years ago
As to question#2, look at the year, 1978. Sweet, like the Stones, Kinks, Rod the Mod et al, was trying to cash in on disco, hence the scarf on Brian. Luved this song in High School.

i love how he trows the mic around its so cool lol.

yeah, brian did seem to get more into moving in their later years. He mainly kept his hands on his hips in the early vids.

I can see that the lead singer has aged quite a bit in this clip, but heck, still as handsome as ever. Wow !.

That is so true Pullisto, i agree 100%, people need to learn how to respect people like this. People like sweet have a lot of wisdom to teach :)
gasburnsquick 3 years ago 2
People today need to heed the lyrics of songs like these, someone feeling this way get looked down upon as if there's something wrong with them feeling thatw way, classed as having some sort of illness! Love depvrivation is indeed like a lack of oxygen, one of the fundamentals, for the soul!

Why did Brian Connolly cut his hair? He had beautiful hair, whay?
PokemonTrainer007 3 years ago

Andy Scott & a friend wrote this song.
Great band of their time.

They sadly lost Mick Tucker 2002...
what a great drummer!

Not 1993, it was 2002.
