  • She's amazing!

  • @grace0221 I feel exactly the same way. I so wish I was alive to see her as Kim.

  • Well done whoever filmed this.

  • she was sixteen here . Holy cow. <3

  • What a treasure this is! Thanks for sharing!!

  • i love this it rules and i like cheese by people u all ugly

  • This is mesmerizing. Lea Salonga has an exquisite voice and is an incredible performer. I saw this play with my auntie and cousins when I was younger and we were all in tears.

  • the problem why they didn't keep the show going on 'till today,,,, is because they can't find another Kim... Do you know how many times they kept on begging for Lea to come play the role again? LOL..no one can EVER match her performance.. :))

  • @yvanqwerty

Huh? What are you talking about? Lea Salonga didn't play Kim for over a decade non stop. She did get replaced by other actresses, both in London and Broadway.

  • I was so lucky to have had tickets during the opening weeks of this show...Lea was BRILLIANT...THIS performance, LIVE, was so heart wrentching that I still cry when I listen to the music

  • I really wish I could've watched it live when it ran at the CCP sometime in the late 90's. I think that was the last run ever where she played Kim :(

  • wwowwowowowoowowowowowowowowoowowwowowowowowowowowowowwwwwwwww frick

  • I been hearing this song my whole life and only just realised the full meaning,,,,,,,,either I'm really slow, or I've gone through something which allowed me to fully understand the lyrics, hehehe

  • @25151206 what did you think they meant, and what did you find out about them, maybe ive missed something too?

  • @rexebuza She's singing about how she'd give her life up, just so that her son could have a better life than she had. When I was young, those were just words to me, but now I understand the feelings and sentiments, as well as the courage, behind those words, and in those actions.

  • too bad i wasn't born yet when this musical was in the theatres. how can i watch it? i will never have the chance to watch the original version.

  • @grace0221 You live in the LA area by any chance? There's going to be a local production of this in April.

  • literally chills the entire time i was watching this video. her voice is AMAZING, i wish i could sing like her!!

  • @hawaiilove97 ... Lea did a concert at a park beside our office building in Eastwood, QC Philippines. She's plugging CATS Manila production that time. After her she sang, she was aided by production assistants and guards out of the stage when suddenly out of excitement, I shouted "LEAAAAAAAAA", it was so loud that she turned to my direction and shouted back "Hi"... she waved at me then gave me that bright smile which I'll never forget!

  • @Sibzist Yeah, she's like that, hehe. When My parents saw miss saigon in London, back in 89-90(I think? maybe I was 4 or 5 at the time, can't really remember, hehe) They went backstage to meet her, and she invited them into her dressing room! The next day, my mum took me and my sister(1 year younger than me) To meet her, and give her flowers and chocolates to say thank you. I remember when she spoke to me, she knelt down so her face was level wih mine and so that I could give her the flowers.

  • @hawaiilove97 - Good for you... Singers in concert don't talk much to preserve their voice and to avoid throat viruses.

  • @luciloooo . I agree with you! Lea is the most down to earth Filipino artist i know aside from Florante. by the way, Lea's house is 45 minutes away from my house here in Manila...that is if there's no traffic! :D

  • most amazing voice i've ever heard, hands down. i'm afraid my boyfriend is going to come home to find me tearing up over her singing. embarrassing but totally justified, i say! i think he's mostly be upset because he'd be able to tell that i'm a bit in love with her. she's the best!

  • she sang this when she came to Vancouver today, and her performance was so much more powerful because she said she could relate to it after she gave birth to her daughter. It became such a much more meaningful performance.

  • grabeh.... sooper!!!!

  • this give me chills! no one can parallel this performance! wow!

  • I got some MAJOR chills on that last line... <3

  • Magnificent actress. Was able to completely carry the emotions across despite her lack of the same experience in real life!

  • Her voice is perfection.

  • A mother and her love for her son.. Desperate in Dangerous times. Lea knows the part.

  • from then until now this song touched my heart...

  • shivering performance!

  • 3:13-3:30 omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chills.

  • I saw Lea in London in the original production before it went to Broadway. The year was 1990. I was only 13, but I remember being so emotionally ravaged by the show and her performance I couldn't even get out of my seat for over 45 after the audience had left the theatre post-show. That girl knocked my heart right outta my chest and I'll never forget it.

  • I love this song. It depicts every reason why i love broadway. it's intense and she is amazing at it!!!!!!

  • as evidenced by my screen name yes i am obsessed with this woman i've been listening to her voice since i was 2 and i thank whoever posted this

  • @leasolanga lolz!!! I was listening to her since I was 3 or 4(I think?)

Anyway, My parents went to see the show and spoke to her afterwards. She invited them into her dressing room for a chat cause my dad's filipino. Later(I think it was the next day, not sure) My mum took my and my sister to meet her, with flowers and chocolate as a thank you to her. I remember she was really humble about it, and knelt down to accept the flowers from me and the chocs from my sister.

  • @leasolanga you have every right to be obsessed with her... good choice!

  • @leasolanga lol it's just funny that you spelled her last name wrong... but yes I agree, she is amazing

  • does anyone know where I can download (torrent or direct) the entire musical with the video? I don't think there are productions of miss saigon anymore ):

  • lea, please come to sydney, australia to perform, the filipino community here is waiting for you.

  • does anyone know where i can watch the original miss saigon [with lea] online? :D

  • This is my favorite song from the show. I often sang it to my son when he was a baby. Lea is amazing and i was blessed to see her on broadway about 10 times.

  • LOLz... I used to be one of the tams in miss saigon in covent garden way back when i was like 4-5 yrs old! I'm 16 now and its the 1st time that I'm looking back at my miss saigon times... Fucking emotional :')

  • Ahh foreshadowing...):

  • this song makes me cry.i'd like to dedicate this to my son.

  • you sings direct to my soul..your awesome! God Bless!

  • I wish I could play Kim, but Im not asian :(

  • @babyS1101 same here.

  • @babyS1101 .... if you've got what it takes nothing is impossible. it's the talent that counts... blind-casting is everywhere my friend. jonathan pryce is no asian but he played the supposedly vietnamese engineer here.... lea is no caucasian, yet she played eponine & then fantine in les miserables in west end and in broadway.

  • @ovitatirac thing is they cast pryce cause they couldn't find any asian guy who was "good enough" to be play the engineer, but after the whole controversy when they first brought it bway, they've avoided casting non-ethnic people in saigon...thing with kim is there are tons of amazing asians who can play kim. theres no need to cast a non-asian as kim. only chance is to do a community production, not pro. color-blind casting usually is only done to cast "ethnic" actors in "non-ethnic" roles.

  • @ovitatirac I think it's fair though.....caucasian actors have SO many roles that they can play. Reserve the ethnic roles for the ethnic actors so they have chance to shine. If you think about it, if there were two actors up for a non-ethnic role and they were equally talented and goodlooking, but one is white, who do you think is gonna get the role? So ethnic actors have a hard time in the business...it's only fair to avoid color-blind casting for ethnic roles.

  • Crystal clear voice. Beautiful.

  • iv just started larning this song with my singing teacher, it nearly made me cry.

  • My favourite scene to, just love this play .

  • I've watched Miss Saigon at the CCP in 2000.I remember,i even bought some souvenir items. The casts performed amazingly.I still wish that i was able to take pictures of Lea or kiss her.I love Miss Saigon!

  • i love lea salonga! I have never seen her preform...i hope to see her on broadway soon one day!

  • She is simply perfect as Kim. Any time I hear or see someone else do the role it's just not right in some way or another. She sounds perfect and the acting is so intensely real. Friggin AMAZING.

  • this gives me goosebumps everytime.. lea ftw!

  • i'm singing this for grade 8! :) it's a really nice song :)

  • GO LEA!!!!!!!

  • It's so difficult to think of anyone else other than Lea playing this role!

  • POWERFUL and STUNNING!!!

  • HECK YEAH!! Just for the heck of it I decided to look up Miss Saigon imdb, and there's a movie with that title due to come out in 2012! And that's about it. No info, thi project is in production, bla bla bla, but how cool is that?

  • flawless

  • TORONTO CANADA is going to have MISS SAIGON once again JULY 9-AUGUST 9,2010. DON'T MISS IT!

  • always makes me cry! thanks for posting!

  • god i love her

  • This kills me

  • On the making of Miss Saigon video (got it here on you tube) during the search which started in UK.. on their US league, there were actually several Vietnamese girls that came for audition. There was one girl whom producers thought would be the perfect Kim cuz of her real experience as one of the "boat people" w/c she readily acknowledge, but she can't reach the high note. Then Hawaii , then finally Manila...

  • yea thats right! Her name is Nhat Ha, she's an Alto. Now she's a famous Vietnamese singer overseas:) (well, she has been, til now^^)

  • I saw Miss Saigon about 20 years ago. I was very touched by it. This video brings back wonderful memories. Thanks for posting. Lea is the best!! No one has come close.

  • And to think that there were actually protesters putting down her performance because she is not ethnically Vietnamese. CMS chose the best talent available for this crucial role.

  • and only 18?

  • I've been blest enough to be cast as Kim in Miss Saigon and I can sing these songs everyday a million times, and I still get chills and tears watching Lea perform. She is incredible.

  • @brie5cheez5 where?

  • @brie5cheez5 I also saw her on Broadway...I'll never forget it. Just watching these videos brings it back and I'm sitting here in tears...

  • Wow. Her voice is so powerful!

  • shivers the whole time.. soo amazing!

    she does philippines proud :)

  • @janina062392 oo nga e!!

  • "I feel his shadow brush my head

But there's just moonlight on my bed"

That brings tears to my eyes =,( So chilling...bravo Lea~!

  • bravisima lea

  • i saw Lea Salong on British TV when she first opened in Miss saigon and sw her twice in the role, the BEST bar none musical performance i have ever seen, she is totally awesome, i get chills even now when i listen to the soundtrack

  • I get goose bumps every time I listen to this! BEAUTIFUL song indeed.

  • I am a theater person. There is this move that we call contraction and expansion. Both are exaggerations on stage. The contraction Leah did gave more chill to the performance than that one who depended too much on movements to enhance the song. Things as this are done to divert the audience's focus of attention where it should be to make the scene effective.

  • Wow. I've always wanted to meet a theater person. What is expansion then? and contradiction too! I want to learn those things... I swear I'll enter theater someday... Ish why I want to learn these things..

  • I saw the Australian one on here and though her voice wasn't as good as Lea's, I thought the cradling of the child in his mother's arms was a good touch. Again, not my intention to insult anyone, please refrain from insulting me. And yes, I know she won several awards for this show, having a different opinion of the choreograpgy does not make me ignorant of the storyline or the actors.

  • i see your point. for me it i thought the cradling of the kid was a little too distracted by the moving of the body back and forth. i think this part where lea was just talking to herself without doing so much movement was more effective and powerful.

  • This gave me chills. So fantastic. I'd kill for a voice like that.

Reminds me a lot of her preformance as Fantine.

  • this is Broadway at its best with Lea singing? superb. piercing. phenomenal

  • Actually if you look and watch the video till the end, you'll see that she's actually holding and engaging with the kid. It's just hard to see on screen. Common people, this is Lea Salonga, the original Kim.

  • Comment removed

  • THIS is what comes up in the dictionary next to "Fierce". Just saying.

  • i can understand why you may say that but that's like one of the major rules of musical theatre. you have to overdo everything so it carries out into the audience. it's the same reason why they have to put a lot of extra makeup on or else they look washed out to the audience. also the possessed thing, it's supposed to be a foreshadowing of what's to come in the second act. the accompaniment at the time supports her intense expression.

  • This is an absolutely beautiful performance. Thanks Lea.

  • fives me goosbumps and chills..... i love it.

  • truly deserving for the tony and olivier award.... ;-)

  • Not really bored in my opinion, I just wish the director or choreagrapher had told her to get a little more engaged with the kid. Just sitting there staring at him bores me, its more touching when the Kims pick up the Tam's and cradle them, or stroke their hair, or something.

  • maybe she was instructed not to move or something...

  • Yes, I said I wished the director or choreographer had told her to move more.

  • well, yeah, 4 som singers, its easier 2 concentrate on singing if ur just sitting or standing der in a good posture.............

  • Yes. And perhaps it would be better for those singers to stick to the choir. Because musical theatre is not the place to work if you just want to sit still for two and a half hours. Sorry if that sounded bratty. I just don't know why my last comment got a thumbs down. Anyway, as I said, onstage people need to move in order to act. I don't believe this performance sucked. I just think it would be more affective if she moved some more.

  • This performance won her Lawrence Olivier award in London and Tony Award in Broadway.

  • This I know.

  • Lea Salonga is one of THE BEST singers of all time.

  • Was someone disputing that?

  • dont wory we all no u wer.

  • obviously you don't know the story or you would not say what you did. She is being in total character of Kim. A young Mom making a major decision while she is watching her child looking at a book..

  • OK-I apologize to anyone and everyone that I offended on here. I am a huge Miss Saigon fan, I love every character and every song, I do in fact know the story. I did not say that Lea Salonga sucked and was a horrible performer, I said I wished that this song had her interact a little more physically with Tam.

  • i don't think she needs to be interacting with the kid. She's not really telling him directly that she'd give her life for him (that would totally freak the poor kid out). I think she's mostly saying it to herself. Like thoughts in her mind rather than actually screaming it out. That's how i take the scene anyways. I thinks it's perfect to have her saying it while she's watching him.

  • Holy heck! I had no idea people like you actually existed!!-People that are able to state their disagreements and reasons for disagreeing with someone while managing to not be rude or insulting! Thank you kseko, for not telling me that I know nothing about the musical or the actress. Now, while I disagree that it would freak Tam out (he's only two and never speaks, so I assume he doesn't understand all that she says) I understand your point, it makes sense.

  • theatre producions have directors and choreographers.. you should've known that kseko. regaring the singing check out other miss saigon songs and their variation. sun and moon is romantic. if you don't like miss saigon. hmmm.. or lea? hmmm.. she just won the tony's for ebest actress in here

  • I really like this scene to be what you have described. I am not sure but when I saw the Toronto cast led by Ma-anne Dionisio, who was a fabulous Kim, I think Ma-anne was talking to the kid. They must have a different blocking for Lea's performance. You know how theater is. They can have 40 blockings for one particular scene.

  • @alexmz123:

Watching this scene, I think Kim's supposed to be singing kind of to herself - her child would probably be unable to understand what she was saying, and I think Kim is reflecting on her love for both Chris and her child

  • @thesimszys well she had to do this for 10 yrs maybe 3 times a week....who wouldnt be bored....same thing over and over again....but i love this musical

  • incredible!!!

  • She really deserved the Tony Award!

  • Thanks for posting this.

    Absolutely beautiful performance.

  • I wish there's a movie version of this with the original cast in it. :D

  • it's in the process of making a miss saigon movie since 2009- and it might go well. DIRECTOR will be the one who directed the movie PRECIOUS. so let cross the fingers and hope they will do a huge better musical movie of this GREAT SHOW.

  • I love MIss Saigon! Super!!!! this song makes me wanna cry

  • here here! there aren't words to describe this piece of art.

  • This song reminds me of my mom. She has given so much for my brother and I.

  • ohhh! shivers!

  • Aww...I'm a huge fan of Lea. This is my first time seeing her version of this and it's bringing tears to my eyes =,)

  • It would be a GREAT treat to all of man kind if they will bring back Miss Saigon to Broadway with the original cast on their 20th year anniversary....
