I think Disney's choice to extend this ending (in the book they shot him right after the wolf attack without waiting of find out) was brilliant. It's so much more heartbreaking cause Yeller really dissapear's before your eyes as rabies takes over and you feel what the family goes through that terrible night.
They sure don't make movies like they used too. Today's society is really missing out on such timeless classics. Many people don't even know who James Arness is anymore. People are so deprived...
@joshscomputer NO!! That is simply not possible - In people, the incubation period (the time between initial contact with the virus and onset of the disease) generally ranges from two to eight weeks. In rare cases, it can vary from 10 days to 2 years. In small animals (like dogs) it is usually shorter - about 1 to 4 weeks!! But it is NEVER just a few hours.
@joshscomputer They can, but often there are subtle behavior changes that you'll notice. The animal also normally goes through a phase called "Dumb Rabies." It pretty much makes the animal..well dumb, just really lethargic and almost retarded. Then they slip into the "Mad Rabies" or "Rage Rabies" phase, which we see with the wolf and Old Yeller here. The movie Cujo shows the onset of Rabies much more accurately. But even that's not completely correct.
the part where old yeller gets shot reminds me of that Friends episode scene with Phoebe. when she was like "no the end the end!" and when he gets shot she's like "what kind of sick twisted movie is this?"
Young Yeller is a puppy, an adorable lop-eared puppy, he's plenty to see, he's got a family tree, he even show he's peppy, he's frisky and he's happy and that's how a good puppy should be, frisky and happy, here Yeller, come back Yeller, best doggone dog in the west (In the west). I love the finale version of this song
i saw this movie when i was 4 and it saddened me sooo much cause we had a lab who looked exactly like him and we had to give him away...it took me 10 years to watch this again!
why didn't they burn him like the cow???! They could've atleast have burned his carcass and THEN buried the ashes...But all in all, It's still dreadfully sad...
@blaxicat2005 The whole point to burning the carcass was so animals couldn't eat her. Since they buried Old Yeller animals can't get to him either. It's pretty easy to bury a dog. Not so easy to bury a cow.
the sick part is...they gotta burn his carcass.or at least thats what I thought when I was about 4.And I could barely handle the shot....rip.rip.rip.rip.rip.rip...........................:'(

I don't know if giving that Arliss kid a tomahawk for a toy is a good idea...

I always love watching Arliss run off with the puppy at his heels. I did that with my dog when she and I were pups. :-)
