  • @VASINGER now you have to explain to me why you think drums are not an instrument

ive been playing them for 9 years now and im pretty damn sure they are

they are considered the most important part of a band, they are naturally the highest dynamic instrument of them all and they are probably the oldest instrument along with bamboo flutes of them all

you can play them fully unlike something such as a turntable.

  • any genre or style can be rough it is not just rock music all of the time

you must not have explored rock music much which is why your natural taste of it is sour

any genre can be as good or as bad as the other its the actual music that counts, genre is just the intager..

i was and still am a huge classic rock fan but i play jazz mostly on drums.

  • 3:41 hello mr.Steve Smtih :) P.S. very good solo of Buddy. P.S.S. Buddy Rich never played bad solos. P.S.S.S. i know that you know that.. hhh

  • Who's saying jazz has no soul? Get the fuck outta here, you don't know anything about jazz!

  • @TheButtinski I agree that Rock music has some emotion- but Jazz has almost none. Its too cerebreal. But the fact remains, this man had the nerve to attack and entire genre of music out of pure ignorance. Musicians should support each other. Well, hes dead.

  • It's funny how so many people bring up his personal dealings and how he was. Who cares? It's not like you were in his band or hanging out with him. His playing and sheer confidence says everything that needs to be said.

Id rather be inspired by someone who is real and confident then some wimp with fake modesty who is lying about it anyway. Even after hearing all the stories and the bus tapes hell it makes me like him even more. He knew he was good and demanded his band gave 110%.

  • @VASINGER thats a horrid thing to say man. You may not like the guy, but hell he can play drums a hell of alot better than you ever can. Dont insult the dead, cause that means your a fucking pussy.

  • @VASINGER YOU FOUL MOUTH BASTARD!! YOU SHOULD DIE YOU KNOW!!! YOU KNOW NOTHING OF MUSIC AND DRUMMING IF U DARE TO SAY THIS!!!! I DOOM YOU TO BECOME DEFF CAUSE U FU*****ING SUCK

  • @sachkofretef No, I know good music. He said some very rude things about wonderful country music, and he was the one who was musically ignorant. Calm down, boy. Don't right in all caps. You obviously lack manners. Drums aren't even an instrument.

  • @VASINGER omg are you like retarded or sth? say out loud to a drummer that drums arent an instrument you'll get flammed to death (if on the internet) or stabbed to death(in real life). in this case - fuCK you man. If you say drums arent an instrument then go examine yourself - cause last time I checked country wasnt really a music genre - it was more like a piece of shit.

Find a hobby - like drumming

  • @sachkofretef No, Country Music is an amazing musical genre full of greats like Patsy Cline, John Denver , Johnny Cash, and the best of the best. I dont care, but Buddy Rich had no right to say the mean things he did about Country Music. His music wasnt anything to write home about, IMHO. I bet he couldnt write a song to save his life. And drums are icing, but they are not the song.

  • @sachkofretef And Rock Music is NOISE.

  • @VASINGER

Rock music isn't noise, and music isn't limited to being a "song". You fail. Good day sir.

  • As a beginning drummer, I have been obsessively watching drummers and drum videos for the last month or so...I have watched many many different drummers....Although I am a Neil Peart fan and am also picking up some other great influences, I have to say that Buddy is the king in my opinion.

its hard to truly generalize, but really it all starts with buddy if you ask me

  • Gone for over 20 years...his name is still mentioned daily...I would bet Bernard,if looking down on us,has a perpetual Big Swing Face grin about how we go on and on about him...and his untouchable greatness.I miss him tremendously.Straight ahead B.R. we love you!!

  • impossible speed and articulation

  • You got that right brother! Power & endurance as well!

    And, all with traditional grip.

The Creator gave Buddy extraordinary finger, wrist, & hand dexterity.

Must have had a very healthy cervical spine! No pinched nerves in him.

  • Seriously, no way time and chance could have created something so intricate and complex. Had to be an infinite creator! I'm fascinated daily by his creation.

  • Check out the 7 stroke rolls at 1:02

  • He's great

  • That's the man. The drummin' man with the magical hands. No other like him.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • You got that right brother!

    He was gifted by GOD!

  • inhuman. it never get's old for me...i always hear or see something new with Buddy. only drummers will understand how amazing his legacy & gift is. his brain was hard-wired to be a drummer...the best ever.

  • Buddy did it first, when everyone else who views this video was still in their father's balls! He influenced more drummers than anyone else ever will. Was he a difficult person? Doesn't matter, that is not the question.

  • Damn Buddy, you never cease to amaze.

  • anyone who goes on about how players are faster than buddy rich, seriously. . .who cares? the fact that buddy can play that fast, yet so clean and so musical NO ONE can match

  • wow

  • LOL! In another video, Buddy ridicules using the "match grip" to play, when he, himself uses it, at 1:59-

  • 1:59-2:11, that is.

  • it's quite possible he was using it to show that he could outplay anyone even when using he match grip. He doesnt primarily use it all the time like alot of drummers do.

  • richcapo...there are no solos showing Buddy playing double bass through the link you provide.

  • > richcapo...there are no solos showing Buddy playing double bass through the link you provide.

CLick on my name and check out the first three videos I have posted -- they're audio only recordings of Buddy's three double bass solos.

  • rich, you need to stop your half speed video crap, there are no "mysteries" on how fast buddy was or wasn't, I know for a fact that there are faster drummers out there and not by some small margin either! so I'm never sure what it is that your trying to prove with all of the half speed stuff you beat us over the head with..

  • I may be wrong.. but I believe the half speed stuff is so that some of us slow people can see all the things that were going on that you just can't really see full-speed. Its timing, precision and rhythms and underlying rhythms.

  • hey I slow stuff down all of the time, the slowing down of the vid. is not the issue but trying to count notes played per second is quite an innacurate way to do that. because the videos have all sorts of "artifacts" sync issues transfer issues {analog to digital) using one program to upload and a different one to slow it down...ETC. fun and revealing! but not accurate enough to break down scientifically like he tries but fails to do.

  • The passage at :51 to :55 is great: Buddy's right hand is push-pulling those sixteenth notes at around 220 bpm while his left is merely adding accents on the quarter beats. He does that sort of stuff throughout his solos, but the position on his hands and the camera work here really make it easy to see. No one else is that fast, in my opinion.

  • At the point you're talking about, he's playing triplets with the left hand on the down beat and the right playing the following two notes.

  • At the point you're talking about, he's playing triplets with the left hand on the down beat and the right playing the following two notes.

Check out my half speed version of the solo. He isn't just playing two notes with his right. He's playing a long push-pull line of sixteenths with his right while accenting with his left.

  • "Check out my half speed version of the solo. He isn't just playing two notes with his right. He's playing a long push-pull line of sixteenths with his right while accenting with his left."

Sorry about that. I don't have this solo, but I have solos with him doing the long push-pull on the hat. Incidentally, on Jojo Mayer "Buddy's Secret Weapon," vidio he specifically refers to the long push-pulls Buddy liked to play. (Specifically, he talks about Buddy doing that on the cymbals.)

  • You mean Buddy is even more bitchen than I thought?!? Wow, go figure....(ha, ha, ha). Thanks for setting me straight. I like watching Buddy's hands, wrists and arms. there's a smoothness, flow and control throughout his range of motion that you never see except for guys like Papa Joe Jones, Joe Morello and a very few others! I'll have to check out that Jojo Mayer tape; he's another very impressive guy.

Can you tell me a little about what you do to slow down the video. Thanks

  • Man that thing he dose with the hat's is incredibles who today plays like that...?

  • You may have just given me the best gift I have ever recieved. That was just spectacular, I mean the double bass solos.

  • Glad you like them!

  • This clip is from a gig at the West Virginia jazz festival in 1984 or 85. i have the whole concert and its incredible. Barry Kiener on piano is also with the band. he died shortly after.

  • Dude i'm a big buddy fan and i wondered if i could trouble you for a copy of that west virginia jazz festival involving buddy rich

  • Yeah, I can play that ............

  • what tempo is that single stroke on quarter notes? 150?

  • More like 350

  • WOW! Never seen this one before. Thx for sharing. Where did you find this? What year was this? Damn! his single-stroke roll is 100x faster than my dbl-stoke rolls lol!

  • Checked out those dialogue tapes. Ha ha fantastic. He was the epitomy of perfection in his ability and approach to playing so I am not at all suprised at him losing it like that - justified or not. Genius.

  • In a shirt and sweater no less!

  • cool! I remember this from one of the scholarship tapes...it's been years simce I've seen it! thanx for posting!!!!

  • does any 1 know what cymbal company was buddy endorsing?

  • Zildjian

  • Yawn...

  • good shit buddy is great!!!!!!!!!

  • chekc out that bus dialoge video, rich talks tons of trash to his bandmates I dont think anyones good ennough to sport a prick dick motherfucker attitude the way he did in that video and I bet there was way more than those that went on untapped!

  • Were you on Buddy's band that day? Were you there when he yelled at his, repeat - HIS, band? FYI, there are also TONS of stories documenting Buddy's kindness and generosity to the guy's on his band. And yes, if ANYONE was good enough to talk to his band like that, it was BUDDY!

  • When YOU become regarded as the world's greatest drummer like Buddy was, then YOU will have a different attitude when YOUR guys are not playing up to their abilities, and making YOU look bad in the process. Buddy's band, Buddy's rules. He did not kidnap anyone at gunpoint to be on his band - they were all there by choice. Shut the fuck up.

  • i love the sound of his hats.

  • i made an involuntary monaing at the end of that solo during the single stroke rolls. that is all.

  • he looks like hes in fast forward. AMAZING

  • wonder if anybody seen buddys single four stroke

  • just imagine if buddy would beat you up what would your face look like

  • not a rare clip at all actually, this is taken from the the memorial video. I have the full gig on video. Buddy is a bit tired but he's still on top. Played a great chart called Walk On The Wild Side...A master.

  • actually its not a rare video clip at at all. its on one of the memorial video's. I have the full gig on tape..this is taken from the memorial video..nice clip. Buddy is tired but still on top. A master.

  • everyone wud agree that buddy is an amazing drummer, but to call a single drummer the worlds best just pisses me off ,not everyones style is swing n big band n stuff, but still hes is pretty damn impressive

  • Incredible drum and cymbal solo. Thanks for posting this. Probably just before his death in 1985 or 86.His hands just got better and better. The greatest for sure!

  • You're welcome! - and some people still insist saying that Buddy was just "flash and speed", no musicality at all... haha, what an heresy! :]

  • You're right, they say that and it's hilarious. Listen to these guys like Lang,Donati, even Dennis Chambers. When these guys play it's all speed and technique no swing or feeling it's all "machine gun" fire.Every note BR played was with heart and soul. One of a kind.

  • He died in April of 1987 FYI
