  • Ι thank for the exceptional video.

    Μy respects!

  • That head does not look like it belongs on the sphinx.body, almost an after thought or even a replacement perhaps, also, the structure gives the impression of a landing pad or a ceremonial platform.

  • Beautiful Ancient Kemet/African Sculpture!

  • man this soundtrack is spooky, reminds me of the heroes theme song.

  • love your comment hevy, and yes, you will find a connection regarding heroes.. check out shenkar..... it is indeed his signature voice and violin... this piece is not from heroes though, it is a composition from the cd "udistam" a collaboration composed and performed by both patrick leonard and shenkar...

  • So many nice views over the Sphinx, great job,... :-)

  • ITSALOVELYDAYTODAY

WOW thanks for posting your work! Awesome!!! It is so incredible that you posted this as I never get to see anything but the front. Great music. It really matches the pictures.

The head of the sphinx looks a lot smaller in proportion to the rest of the body. Is that the way it really is or am I seeing things?

  • thank you voyerist! appreciate your comment and observations... yes, the head of the sphinx is smaller in proportion. you can't really see this until you are up in the air or at least a little higher than the normal viewing levels - this is very unusual in ancient egyptian sculpting, they are/were known for their mastery in proportion. this is addressed in "The Mystery of the Sphinx" - there are probably many postings of the documentary here on YT if you haven't seen it...

  • This is a great vid! Never have i seen the top side of the sphinx that close before. But I'm left wondering what is "unusual" about the pictures. Anyway great vid, nice music too.

  • hey savant, thank you for taking the time to view my sphinx video... you ask about why i think the images are unusual - as a pro photographer, at least back in the days of film, there were certain criteria on a technical level that would make what we would deem a good pic... the day i finally got up in that old rusty helicopter the weather and atmospheric conditions were terrible for shooting... dust, grit, smog, light, so these pics are not exactly "refined" (but i like that about them)...

  • also most films/pics don't show the variety of different angles of the sphinx for such a long time (its usually a front angle with at least one of the pyramids behind). i share the photographs for people who are interested in this subject to be able to take the time to look at the weathering patterns on both the body of the sphinx as well as the sphinx enclosure.. i think you would have to love the sphinx, giza plateau and its mystery to appreciate this piece - so thank you for doing so.

  • Reminds me of the Thundercats lair... reckon the Cromagnum folk (spelling) made it myself... dudes got civilized before they went extinct... they were much stronger built than us, giants... or maybe it was something else, something that burned its dead, leaving no trace... odd that the head is so tiny though... retouch?

  • Thank you! no retouching, but i sure wish i had the skills to be so good with photoshop :-)

Some people feel the Sphinx is a remnant from Atlantis, which relates to your comment "dudes got cvilized before they went extinct".

  • I very much enjoyed the vid - I didn't mean you retouched it though, I meant the Egyptians might have, from an original head... because the head seemed so small. : )

  • thank you again :-) you can see where my head is at (pardon the pun) i agree with you, or at least if not the egyptians some one!

  • I didn't realise it was in such a terrible condition....sad. I also tend to go along with the Leo connection.

  • the appropriate conservation of the Sphinx is a huge challenge. some of the problems today stem from effect of the acids from pollution with the limestone. it is sad to see, one of the fascinating aspects is comparing how amazing the original carving must have been (carved from one piece of limestone bedrock), and the repairs today... some of the original body is now covered with small (in comparison) bricks, we will never be able to see the Sphinx and the original stone again...

  • they say the head was carved out of the original head which was of a lion... in act the sphinx is aligned with the constellation of Leo. The strange proportion of this head to the body seems to give credence.

  • its a wonderful mystery isn't it! we often see video footage of the Sphinx from the air, but the stills gave us a chance to focus clearly on the unusual proportions of the head to the body - ancient Egytpian sculpting is usually lauded for its extraordinary sense of proportion!

  • Namaste

This is absolutely amazing. Beautiful. So many angles and the music is perfect. Thanks for sharing this with us. It made me feel like I was really there instead of looking at pictures of it. Great job. 5*****

    peace and earth muffin hugs,

    vicki

  • I like this aerial view but also the different angles you have used. Indeed you r very talented. I really like your videos. Namaste x

  • Quite simply stunning to see this amazing structure from above with the detail of the water flow around its enclosure, when looking at it from above one could imagine them re-carving the head over millennia as its proportion is different to the main body.

Your so lucky to have been there, thanks for yet more stunning work.

  • thank you! apparently it only takes twenty years or so (give or take a few) for the enclosure to fill with sand, how many years might the body of the sphinx be buried beneath the sands, where it would not be subject to wind erosion, and yet the head be vulnerable to change (re-carving) by the hand of man!?

  • So incredible, thank you!!! ;D

  • wow !!

i want to buy this recording

    help me please

  • Fantastic Video and great photos!

I think the body resembles more that of a dog that a cat. I would imagin it had the head of a dog..pointing to the "Dog Star" as opposed to being aligned to Leo all those years ago.

    Thanks for posting

  • Thanks Tyrone! and, my pleasure to post and share the photographs, we so rarely get to see these angles and perspectives for more than a few seconds. Thanks to Pat Leonard and Shenkar for their music inspiring me to do so! Appreciate your videos too!

  • Miss Caroline, You continue to amaze me with your courage. Strapped and hanging out the back of a clunker helicopter - YIKES! Of course I have seen your fabulous work in master print form - I assume it is part of the Getty archives. Was that you behind the tripod? I kept hoping to see your lovely face and name appear, but alas, every the mystery woman. The size of the Sphinx is amazing, especially when people are in view. Is that white speck on the back a building or a monolopy hotel?

  • did you know moses had close ties with the egyptian pharaos ?

  • "The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun.

[There is] no remembrance of former [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance of [things] that are to come with [those] that shall come after."

    Ecclesiastic 1 KJV

  • not a cat but a lion. it's part of a timemarker for the year 10.000 bc where something happened.

there is water errosion on the sphinx, it is NOT from the egyptian era.

  • thank you for your comments too, andand... the video link you gave is excellent.

  • Ah, you don't usually get to see good pictures of the surroundings of the Sphinx, looks really beat up O.o

  • It is indeed a very time worn area. My mind wonders at what is beneath the sands as well, the plateau is like a honeycomb of tombs, caverns, and tunnels (seemingly going nowhere). We usually only see the "pretty" and photogenic angles of the plateau. The weather was also tough for photography that day - gritty smog, haze, mist... adding to the aged atmosphere and look of the photographs. I've grown to appreciate the pics for exactly that.

  • That head's been re-sculpted many times, by the ruler du jour I think. Scale is way too small for it to be the original. Who it resembles now is unimportant - isn't there a theory that the head used to be an actual cat?

  • Thank you for bringing that up! The aerial photographs were helpful to study and see the different proportions, highly unusual apparently for classic Egyptian sculpting! I would tend to think the head has been re-carved, notice it is also a different strata of limestone as well. There is a section in "The Mystery of the Sphinx" (John Anthony West) that addresses this, and uses a lion head as an example - but does anyone really know what went on then? Great food for thought and discussion!

  • I read the analogy of ping pong ball on a concrete block once, which describes the sphinx pretty well. Or a pin head. It was obviously much larger and as rulers came and went the face was changed.

I think it was Keops' son who was the last to re-carve the head to his image since they look very similar. But no one knows and probably will never know, unless they find a library buried under the thing. As for the original head, it could have been a lion or a Griffon head, we'll never know.

  • When one looks at some of the very old drawings, paintings, and early photographs of the Sphinx, you can also see how much has been repaired and changed in just these few centuries, not to mention the question of how many years has the actual body been buried beneath sand? It only takes about 20 years or so (give or take some of course) to fill the sphinx enclosure itself! Appreciate your thoughts very much!

  • great job! :)
