@TrainChaser08 yes and no. you could buy the homologation special cars thru any dodge or plymouth dealer. the actual race cars were bodies in white shipped to the racers consigned to each model make. chrysler shipped hundreds of body in white wingcars to plymouth and dodge racers between august/69 and august 70.
if you want some understanding, some semblance of an idea how fast the Chrysler wing cars were compared to the competition, look at the following speeds: cale yarborough sat on the pole for the february 69 daytona 500 at approx. 183mph and change. dick brooks sat on the pole for the fall 69 talladega 500 inaugural race, in a daytona charger, at 199.228 mph. that folks, is incredible. 200mph in a truly stock car wearing sneakers, open helmet, cigarette lighter in the dash, bias belted tires.
Thanks rdadal. I would never have known there was a difference between the Daytona wing vs the Superbird wing if you hadn't mentioned it. I own a mint, '69 Charger RT 440. Wish it was a Daytona.
Thanks. I saw those cars race many, many times. The great era for stock car racing. Small difference. The Dodge had the support for the wing more vertical, the Plymouth had a slant back to the top. Don't know why.
@magnaflowedramx4 you may or may not be telling the truth but only 2 superbirds in that combination still exist. and i'm talking fy1 yellow with black top, bucket seats, console mounted 4-speed, and 426 hemi. one of them was mine bought new at brubaker motors here in lancaster, PA. which one does your dad have? i'd like to know if you're bullshitting or you actually have the J code from the fender tag.
@midatlanticcycle I think you misunderstood me. What I meant to say is that racing was at it's best at that time in history. My father or I have never owned a Superbird or Daytona. The closest thing I ever owned to that was a '69 Roadrunner and another time I owned a long set of cross rams bolted to a.030 over 440. Those Superbirds and Daytona's sure were cool cars. I really liked those free breathing HEMI's.
My dads buddy has an all original '70 Superbird 426 Hemi pistol grip 4 speed in yellow... One day he had it as the centerpiece in a car show and a guy walked up and offered him 300k on the spot and the offer was turned down... This guy looks like a homeless person but has millions worth of cars... Like a plumcrazy purple 70 hemicuda... But did anyone know that an original superbird nose cone costs over 25k!!!! Well I guess I'll stop talking now
Love this video. I wish dodge would reproduce the daytona and get rid of the want to be COT (iroc) cars. There gone race the Challenger at Daytona in July but im affraid they'll be saddled with the COT look. The song fits the video perfect, Great job!
@PettyMower i'm in amish country, southern PA. i've owned 3 wing cars since 1972, still have my superbird that i bought in october/72. also owned a red/white daytona charger for many years, the lowest mileage one owner daytona known to exist. sold it a few years ago to a guy named larry bell from indy. i probably know wing cars as well or better than anyone in the world. having been around them since they were new.
I still own the Lime-Lite Green Bird that I purchased in 1986. I once parked beside a red/white Daytona that only had 503 miles. I believe it was 1987 in Hagerstown, MD. It was a show put on by Ed Bohr (sp?). The guy with the Daytona won best of show, and although they gave me best wing car....it should have went to the Daytona. (Was that you and your Daytona?)
Ed has tried to purchase my car multiple times, and I last heard from him in 2002.
@PettyMower i know those guys. ed bohr was big in the mopar vintage scene for many years and he and a guy named keith keener used to put on that hagerstown show. keener got mixed up in domestic problems and lost the few cars he had. i never saw that red daytona you speak of but it wasn't my car. 20 years ago or so i went out to central PA to look at a low-mileage FJ5 (lime light) superbird that a guy had in his garage forever. think it had about 19,000 miles or so on it. was that your car?
@midatlanticcycle Keith Keener....I haven't heard that name in a long time. I remember him have a few VERY nice cars and an attractive wife. LOL
There used to be a Yellow Bird (440+6, 4-speed) sitting on top of a hill, on Skyline Drive. The nose was beat up very bad!!! The owner was a black fellow, he was a manager of a Giant grocery store. I tried to buy the car, as did many, I'm sure. I eventually gave up and heard that Keith purchased the car. I believe this was not long before his divorce.
@PettyMower keener was always a bit of a big feeling, rising star type. IMO. he came on the scene strong with his good lookin' old lady, buying up everything in site, then divorce court came along and he lost everything. LOL
he tried to buy my 71 Hemi GTX and RT/SE Hemi Challenger from me a few times but i never had any dealings with him. i don't remember that bird on or near skyline drive but i do remember the identical bird in south jersey rotting away by the shore near wildwood.
I never heard about the Wildwood, NJ 'Bird. I'm sure you heard about the Yellow 'Bird in Dover, DE (440+6 ~ 4-speed) that was rotting away in a field not too many years ago.
I talked to the owner of that car more than once. He was the original owner, and was not interested in selling. During the times that I talked to him it was still in his garage in Dover.
No....that was not my 'Bird. It currently has approx. 80,000 miles, and I still occasionally drive it.
If you subscribe to Mopar Collector's Guide you may have seen my car in their "Toys in the Attic" article that featured my Richard Petty riding mowers.
My dad had a Red Charger Daytona with White stripe. I use to love driving that car around Dallas.. So many kids use to ask me what kinda Kit car it was. He also had a Black R/T and a Green R/T S/E charger.. Both were hemi's. I miss those days
even though i exseeded my comment limit i had to comment on this epic vid i love the cars and the music and i really wished i was alive during these years instead of having to deal with gas shortage and pos ric4e burners i want american muscle back dammit these kind of cars should re alloewed into nace car and show the other how its done like the old days i would absolutley love to see a daytona smoke the doors of a modern nase car (if you can call them cars anymore )
I don´t even bother to see those others videos of the Superbird : this is the best one, because it have something the others haven´t: it CAPTURES the essence and the spirit of those crazy years - hendrix and joplin dead, vietnam burning , you got what a film director has: this need to recreate the atmosphere of those years to fully understand them ; the car is just an excuse: the understanding of that time is what matters. as a kid in the 70´s, it was a pleasure to REVISIT those years.
i have have a 1971 Dodge Charger 500 for sale my reserve is $30,000.00 my number is (904)-292-9691 its on ebay. its soon to be in the classic car trader

The song accompanying this snapshot vid sucks beyond belief. How could someone write those shitty lyrics (what few there are) and actually record them and let anyone hear them?
There was a black Daytona on British number plates. So one at least made it over the pond.

He also drove a few Dodge Daytona's in IROC (International Race of Champions).
