@JettRink50 for his solo work, Graceland is probably the most accessible album, and anything written in the early 70s-mid 70s is a tad more like simon and garfunkel. Check out his 2001(maybe 2000?) album Youre the One - its more rooted in american music tradition, and might be easier for your taste. enjoy!
Never heard this before, I lost track in 1970 and started catching up in 2008. Buying
the albums in order I am just up to this one next, but for the first time, there are songs I don't like. I do like this one though, I could never get into most of the
African or other foreign type songs, I wouldn't know who wrote them if I didn't know.
as for the music, Simon has not always been thinking 10 years ahead. but in the end of the 80s he managed to form at least 15 years of popular music. look at it this way - today already virtually everyone goes afrolatin. he was the first western artist who included the afrolatin on the large scale. AND IT GOES 100% with his lyrics. of course everyone may have one's opinion.
The parade featured in the video was in Richmond, Va. I remember we had very little notice that Paul Simon would be riding on a float, and heard rumors that Steve and Chevy would be there too. I shot pictures of the parade, which was in 1990 or 91. When their float appeared, the crowd around it thickened quite a bit, with security, media, and gawkers all tagging along.
Paul Simon doesn't play the flute or the saxophone. The joke is from his video for "You Can Call Me Al" with Chevy Chase from the Graceland album. This video was obviously made to play off that earlier video, and I was kinda bummed by that.
Actually, the song was a big hit. You remember the Central Park Concert in NYC? Well! It's the only title that was repeated by public request. I just love it. It's my childhood music. It's deep in my bones.
This music is a pop stylized version of the Bikutsi from South central Cameroon (West Africa). For new trends in the Bikutsi, check Lady Ponce and Tanus Foe on YouTube.
I love this so very much. How was this not a huge hit!?
Should I get surprise? I've heard Outrageous and it was good, but is the album all kind of un-melodic and maybe too sound scape heavy? Also, the freakin' baby on the cover kinda turns me off from it...
Surprise was the album that forced me on a Paul Simon album scavenger hunt so I may be bias as to it's awesomeness. I still love Surprise (after a year of heavy listening). I also really dug You're The One though too and lots of folks apparently were disappointed with that one. Rhythm-o-t-S is my all time favorite. You should go get Surprise! =)
That would be God! He keeps trying to tell me how much he loves me everyday...and when I forget...or life makes me ignore Him..he reminds me again and again...It makes me cry tears of joy!
I don't think Paul ever wrote a better song than this. I saw him in Glasgow on the "Born At The Right Time" tour and he played this THREE times that night. Quite right too. It's a work of genius.
Paul Simon, a master of music. Imagine how lucky you'd be to work with him, you couldn't help it but learn so much. The ultimate would be, to be a student if his.
I was at this parade. Back on leave from my duty station in Turkey (USAF).. Filmed on Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia.

My last comment 2 years ago! Well I missed everything between 1970 and 2008,
been catching up listening to albums in order since then. I still can't get into the
African foreign type music he does, I should have said I like this song, but this is
an exception. Dangling Conversation I play all the time, he thought it was his next
hit, it's a hit with me.
