Really, this is interesting. Kinda like what happened when Conn took the bell of their mellophone, made it straight, and it become a mellophonium. A straight alto? Sounds like brass have ventured further into sax language since the advent of the saxhorn. xD
As an FYI, I recently saw two Couesnon forward facing Eb horns in the flugelhorn section of ebay. Both went for more than I was willing to go for, unfortunately. One of 'em would have made a good match for my Couesnon alto horn. Also, in the valve trombone section of ebay, you can find listings for valve 'bones in either Eb or F. Judging from the price, they're most likely Chinese made, but might be worth takin' a chance on.
@intrepidpooch The instrument you're thinking of is actually a Bb alto Saxhorn, not a flugel. Same family as this horn. Saxhorns range from Bb piccolo to Eb bass. This is the Eb alto/tenor.
@Virtuoso95 The modern flugel is Saxhorn, not a flugel. The Eb tenor/alto horn is also a Saxhorn. Real flugles tend to have rotary valves. Most people wouldn't know a real flugel if it fell on them.
Hi. Just got an old Conn forward facing "Solo Alto Horn" from 1903. I love your tone. What mouthpiece are you using? I first tried a denis wick 5 which was too dark sounding. Just got the yamaha 37c4 alto horn mouthpiece, which I like. Enjoyed your playing, inspired me. thanks, Glenn
You have a pretty nice sound .I have a collection of Alto forward facing horns: Olds F trpt., antique New York Inst Co. F trpt.(Bohemian),DEG Signature F marching Alto,Kanstul valved bugle in G, Eflat Alto valve Trombone. You should check out the music for Desafinado. It was painful to hear you murder the melody.Try reading it from a manuscript and then update this video. Alto Horn Brother.
Bekalovessubway, a forward facing tenor horn (or solo alto horn in the USA) is pitched in low Eb so its range is lower than the flugelhorn-concert A bass clef to approximately concert Eb top space on the treble clef. It is sometimes referred to as an alto flugelhorn. It has more plumbing than a flugelhorn. Mine is marked Elkhart but I believe was made by Couesnon. It takes a mouthpiece only slightly different from a mellophone mouthpiece. It's a wonderful instrument. Beautiful tone!
They crop up in the flugelhorn section on ebay from time to time. You have to look carefully to tell the difference. Mine cost £35 but I have seen them go for a lot more than that.
this one is an old Boosey and Hawkes, they are sold mainly in mainland Europe for marching bands. Its the same fingering as a trumpet but sounds lower.
I bought mine for £35 on Ebay as nobody really wants them.
No its not, its an Eb tenor horn (forward facing). Listen to the pitch and timbre of the notes. I am going to have to settle this once and for all by making a video of me holding my flugel and the tenor horn.
Two points: One, that's not a flugelhorn but a solo alto (tenor) horn, which is just a normal alto (tenor) horn rewrapped to be playable with a straighten bell for an alto (tenor) horn soloist to have his sound project directly towards the audience. The second point is that the modern day flugelhorn isn't even a flugelhorn but a Bb soprano saxhorn. The flugelhorn was an 18th century German horn that "died out" around 1900 known today as the keyed bugle.
brand and model?

What's the bore size at the valves on this? It's got an interesting sound for sure.

@glennalper Its a Wick 5 I am using, but only because I had one around the house. It would sound better on a Wick 3 probably.

Did you buy that silver one from Dillon's? I kept meaning to call about that!

A most beautiful instrument. Well done. I have a tenor horn, but it's the more standard shape.

What is the difference between a foward facing tenor horn and a flugel horn please?
And does anyone know the diference between a soprano trombone and a slide cornet please?
bekalovessubway 2 years ago
No such thing as a slide cornet/trumpet. It's a Soprano Trombone

in my opinion, its sound nicer than Mellophone

wow... I've never seen one of those before... COOL
Pokegirl3000 3 years ago
Wouldn't that technically be an Eb bass trumpet?
fatpoop619 3 years ago
No, because its a horn not a trumpet! Eb alto trumpet is narrower bore and less conical.

A FLUGEL HORN IS HIGHER PITCHED. This is not a flugelhorn. Listen to 'Feel so Good' for heaven sakes. Next you'll say its a trombone.

whoaaa who makes bell front tenor horns? what company i mean haah.
another question, being it in Eb, are the fingering different from a trumpet or a euphonium?

That's a flipping Flugel.

Its a Flugel horn. Most brass bands have one, its between a tenor horn and a cornet.
guildwarsplaya33 4 years ago
No, its an Eb tenor horn.
Look at the size of the mouthpiece and the size of the instrument in relation to my hands.
Look at the big loop of tubing in front pf the valves.
hostroute 4 years ago
The tenor horn is more similar to the flugerhorn or to the french horn?
friketa 4 years ago
dude this is not a tenor horn i should know i play one
ditchit 4 years ago
Yes it is. Its a forward facing one not an upright facing one as you would get in a British brass band.

Fairplay mate. I'm only 11 years old. Obviously still a lot to learn. Nicely played by the way.
