This was Nick Clegg's final Desert Island Disc. I just listened to the program, and when it was playing I felt shivers running down my spine. This is a fantastic piece of music.
This is very special... is a song that comes from the heart and takes your soul..... if i close my eyes listening this sweet music i feel smell of fresh flowers...
Terrific performance this! But.....despite the bad editing, the bell, the apparently diseased audience, and mismatched video/sound, Horowitz in Vienna is the genius.
Brendel is by far one of the most talented pianists alive...i wish I had half the talent he has! His sense of tempo is impeccable, thought I prefer later Brendel when he uses more rubato. His interpretation in this video is the best I've heard this piece. thank god i saw him in chicago on his retiring tour before it was too late!
I agree, I saw Brendel in Chicago too and it was incredible. Never seen the CSO so packed with the extra seats on stage. I'm studying this piece now and it is much more difficult than it sounds, especially if a pianist like Brendel is playing it. This performance of Schubert is a jewel
Do you remember the encore pieces he played? If I'm remembering correctly, the I loved the second encore he played, but I can't remember what it was :(
I love it. It seems like the pianist and the piano has become ONE... Pianist playing the instrument as if he is having a conversation with an old friend....
I love his dreamy and retrospecting expressions too!
I've been playing this piece for the last few weeks, and after listening to a few other performances, (including Horowitz), this is by far the best. Brendel marries technicality to unstudied feeling. Thanks for posting!
Well, what use is musicality without technicality? I reckon it's best to nail the technical side of peices, then work on the musicality... Making a peice more musical is far easier if you dont have to concentrate on the playing...
But seriously, you are correct. I want to have a very good technique, and I also want to have good musicality, such as André Laplante. (Check out his Miroirs on my channel! It's the best!)
i've just stated learning the piece for my ABRSM diploma, and the first time in a loong time i've really connected with a piece. its just stunning, especially when Brendel or Horowitz play it.
one of the best. something I'd listen to everyday and I had to paint it.

I really want to learn this. People have told me I'm all technical, no musicality. =(
