I think Gavin Friday is a tool, seriously think the guy is full of himself, having said that this is actually a fantastic version of a tune which at the time of its original release re defined the greatest band of all time. Definitely the best cover on the album.
If this song was left for the Zooropa album I'm sure the sound would have been something closer to this cover. Zooropa was more experimental style-wise. Definitely a departure from the Sunday Bloody Sunday style that got them up on the charts.
ok...well i was about to hate this tune ONLY Because, for me, this song has one of the greatest guitar solos of all time...so i was certain he wasn't going to pull it together...but it works
This cover is a mixed bag for me. Most of the time I think to myself,"Damn, he nailed this.". At certain points all I hear is electronic covers of intestinal distress. That being said, this is at least a respectable effort. Gavin gets it, Jack gets it, Dave Gahan gets it a little too much, but most of the others sound like they were listening to U2 on tranquilizers.
Who is Suzy and what is her original connection to Achtung Baby? Answers on a postcard please to Principle management, Rogerson's Quay, Dublin, Ireland.
Gavin is a long time friend from Bono and frankly I think this version is awesome.
I agree with you that there are a lot off crappy versions on this coveralbum but the DM and Gavin Friday contributions are exceptions in my opinion as they catch the essence of the song and bring something new and attractive to the song.
@stealingitback I don't think this is a sacriledge at all. Bono himself acknowledges that his transition into the 'Fly' character was much influenced by Gavin, and that it seemed that Bono and Gavin were turning into each other in their musical journey. The sinister-lounge-performer-in-a-cabaret-in-hell is rendered differently but well in this version, and isn't that a very true characterization of the Fly?
its always been gavin and bono they grew up in balumun which i used to walk thru when iwas fucking a boy in the council estate, the whole thing is a ghetto, when your young and think shits glammy you dont note you could die, so noone smells your fear, the rest of u2 grew up in far nicer neighbourhoods, esp adam, but gavin/bono is onething,. in many ways, know that
hardly a fucking sacrilige, id bet all i have that gavin ands bono - irecently saw the old bono vox hearing aid store in dublin, they arent really even aware of the fact that the most famous frontman ithere is uses the name of the store, gavin has always been bono and gavin, he refuses to take money from them except occasionally when its just one of his many many many many many many many many ideas, creative conusltant is the titile, but thats bullshit, gavins band virgin prunes star
Funny, I thought this was what the original should have sounded like, even though I was utterly obsessed with U2 (but not electro music) at the time when Achtung Baby was released...and 15 years previous ...Gavin´s interpretation captures the feeling of the lyrics in a way, I´ve always felt and heard them...Flies are pretty cynical and sneaky creatures, too! :o)
No one's probably gonna read this, but I’ll say it anyway cuz I feel at least 1 person will. I'm a young designer and graffiti artist, I know there's a million out there but I feel like my art has a unique individual style.
If you just take a min and give me a chance I'll make you a believer. I would love nothing more than to have a loyal following on youtube. If anyone who reads this could press the "THUMBS UP" others will see it. Just a simple button push will make a huge difference.
I love Gavin Friday! He is awesome. Get his albums and you will agree! This version kicks the sh*t out of U2's version. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@7da7n37 The Fray at least tried to put passion and life into that song. Granted, the vocals were all wrong, but at least it felt like there was some effort there.
Snow Patrol, on the other hand, basically wrote a whiny, acoustic emo ballad and slapped U2's lyrics on top of it. No passion, no energy, it just did not fit the lyric.
@jacksonbriggs37 Fair enough. Not a huge fan of either band so i can understand. I wish there where more upbeat renditions on the album than there are. Most seem to be quieter, simpler versions.
I have only heard Jack White, NIN, and this so far and this is by far the best. I do like each of these bands individually so I was really looking forward to hearing all of them. This song is actually pretty dark lyrically so I'm glad he was able to capture that and still keep the essence of U2 by ending it a little lighter. Well Done! Still say this is the best one yet!
@BrianjustBrian Apart from Glasvegas, are you serious or just deaf? Jack White destroyed 'Love Is Blindless', Garbage may as well have released a lame b-side and The Fray shouldn't wait for the ground to open up and swallow them. At time of typing - I'm drunk, that's why I've bothered to argue, but it doesn't render my argument null and void. I will still think you're wrong in the morning, Sorry.

Not as good as U2's live version on their 2001 tour, but not bad. Gavin does sound a bit gravelly.
