A Smart car is esentially a rolling Roll Cage like a stock car has, and it doesn't budge- it actually activates the other vehicle's crumple zones in an accident. I would much rather be in a Smart in an accident than a truck, SUV, or van, many of which don't have to follow the same safety regulations this car does... and BTW, I know this because I own one and have researched it greatly :-)

that was the 1999 smart. they had some problems with the balance of the car. you try that with 2000 + smart and im quite sure it would be very different

The vehicle is just too light weight to stand up against most cars on American roads. In a NHTSA lab all that matters is the occupant survival from the initial collision. I would much rather be in a Smart in an accident than a truck, SUV, or van, many of which don't have to follow the same safety regulations this car does... and BTW, I know this because I own one and have researched it greatly :-)

@MrVanMan311 It is unsafe because of just that, the "roll cage" as you refer to it doesn't budge. There are no crumple zones to absorb the impact, the occupants take all the force, ever heard of blunt drama?
I do understand that they couldn't include crumple zones into the smart just because there was no room, but that is what makes it less safe. Don't get me wrong, it may be a safe car, but ONLY IN IT"S CLASS. Overall it just falls short. You are taking a chance by driving it...

While it may pass NHTSA tests with good statistics, observe how the Benz sends the Smart flying-- literally airborne. The vehicle is just too light weight to stand up against most cars on American roads. In a NHTSA lab all that matters is the occupant survival from the initial collision. On the road, when your car gets flung through the air, you may land in oncoming traffic, impaled on a pole-- or over a cliff. Statistics rarely tell the whole story and should be evaluated, not accepted blindly.

Well, heres the rep. That car up there hit at about 50MPH with a smallish car and crumpled like tinfoil. It has a 1* safety rating in the intelligant, non hippy's brain, and even some hippies are realizing that they are more important than a little air or a little money. You hit a mailbox with that thing and you're fucking dead. An SUV is safe, affordable, and has enough room so you can fit 6 people, or 3-4 people and some cargo. smartcar<motorcycle<car<SUV in safety and usability

Me and my dad were laughing and making jokes about it, just then a semi~ came around the corner and turned towards us. Why dont you use common physics when looking at the amount of force and ENERGY that is going to be transferred into the smart car due to the low very very small amount of crunch zone on the car. Most accidents with this SMART car end up in Very serious /critical or even death. Put your money where you mouth is and face off against my Sebring LXI, or better yet my Yukon XL at 35 mph.
