He wrote it as a response -as he was called over to the USA by a record producer, who then couldn't sign him because he signed Damien Rice that week instead. The video is quiet frankly a masterpiece!! The idea that at the end of any relashionship we are put on trial (all be it in the minds of people) and every thing we have done,no mater how minor it seemed at the time,is re- and cross examined. After which we are found guilty or not. Fantastic conceept for a music video. Using Nurenburg as inspiration was a stroke of genuis. One of the best music videos for a generation imho

I am in court for a variety of things that you're not quite sure of but certainly a crime of passion - I love the ambiguity of it. There are hints of running against modern-day capitalism or a controlling society where we are all robots.

The video is imply the production of an intelligent and cult person. Since we can read in the printed page LA IMAGINACION CONTRA LA NORMA, and the voices in spanish in the background, we can inmediatly bring to our mind the book of Julio César Guanche, who made a compilation of interviews and essays in which he along with the interviewed make an analysis of the Cuba pre-revolution understanding it as a true REPBLIC. Will Young uses this as a metaphora introducing a sort of Garcia Lorca story.
The young poet (Young) is part of a friendship & love triangle. He is clearly loved by a woman, but keeps a man as a companion. The woman receives nothing but his company however she still loves. When the man isn't fully in frame, there is always a hint of him such as his arm, a profile, etc. It's likely that the rebellion march ending with Young being put on trial, and standing alone, is for indecency, possibly because of his love or art supporting his love… his "old time love" in the melody.
@ohnonichole just a quick note: someone asked why the judges were eating ice cream. This is a rather obvious way of showing that the judges do not care about this trial and it's possible the outcome is already decided before it even started. They're taking orders and given treats to do so. No matter what, the demeanor of the video shows that there won't be a happy ending for these people, but perhaps this may be the small flame that starts a fire for something bigger.

The young poet (Young) is part of a friendship & love triangle. He is clearly loved by a woman, but keeps a man as a companion. The woman receives nothing but his company however she still loves. When the man isn't fully in frame, there is always a hint of him such as his arm, a profile, etc. It's likely that the rebellion march ending with Young being put on trial, and standing alone, is for indecency, possibly because of his love or art supporting his love… his "old time love" in the melody.

@ohnonichole just a quick note: someone asked why the judges were eating ice cream. This is a rather obvious way of showing that the judges do not care about this trial and it's possible the outcome is already decided before it even started. They're taking orders and given treats to do so. No matter what, the demeanor of the video shows that there won't be a happy ending for these people, but perhaps this may be the small flame that starts a fire for something bigger.

Great song; but what the hell was the music video about? Was Will Young on trial for crimes against humanity? And what was up with the judges eating ice cream at the end?
