I agree this video may the best of the series. I always say "The problem of the photographers is that they think as photographers" Many times you should think as a business person. Being a good photographer also means you and the people you love has all they need to be ok. Off course this requieres money.
Thanks Mark. It is a very difficult time to be a photographer. Supply and demand is the hardest thing to gauge. There was a time when you could "wait out" the people who charged too little for their sessions. Eventually they would go out of business, and the market would return to normal. The problem now is that there is a never ending supply of newcomers, most of which won't last the year, but that is still a year where they are giving photos away...
Figuring your taxes in as "costs" is not really smart, because that number fluctuates based on how much you make. Better to calculate costs separately, then determine your profit, then add in income taxes (as percentage of profit), then sales tax on top of that.
Also, the method in the video won't work for photographers, especially wedding and portrait photogs, who charge using an hourly rate instead of a day rate.
@stacyreeves (cont'd) For hourly rate photogs, figure out the number of portrait sessions you do and the number of weddings you do per year (be conservative), and multiply by how many hours you spend SHOOTING each. For example, if you do ten eight hour weddings and fifty two hour portrait sessions each year, that's 180 hours you spend shooting. Now take your annual cost, and divide by the number you just calculated (in this example, by 180). That gives you your cost per shooting hour.

@errorrestricted, well think about it. You maybe going only 5mi-round for the photo shoot. 5mi out of a 20mpg car gets you 1/4th a gallon of gas. A quarter gallon of gas multiplied by (roughly) $3.75 is .94cents. Near a dollar. Cool?
@snapfactory I recall the gas wars when they went down to .9/gal and cheaper. A dollar went a long way back then! Out of everything I've seen on YOuTubE, this has to be the best yet. Very real world.
On a related topic, Can you please do a video on photographic art sales ?
I have my work up on Imagekind since the site provides a good and secure presentation and they deliver great reproduction and framing services, but setting the print sale price can be an issue, I've gotten advice in all directions.
This is fantastic information. Other YouTube channels should take notes. I will always watch these videos given the quality stays the same. Thanks a bunch Mark!!
Even when i think episodes are coming way too fast this really changes the angle...wish my customers understood and competition did too. Live in an unfair market....regards Marck you make the show rock! regarsd to the production crew....too...O

@errorrestricted These are very fake numbers. We are focusing on the principles not the actual dollars involved.
