@LilBJessup Yes, the front beam was I believe 6 inches wider, and then the trailing arms were 3 inches longer per side as well. From that, at the spindles, 14 inches of movable travel from extreme compression to fully uncompressed was available.
@gyrenejoe pretty sure if you want the suspension to drop that much you will need to go A-arms... However, I am not a professional and I would probably call McKenzies in Orange, California. They give free advice and they run their own race team as well as sell most of the off road parts I used on this build. Thanks BTW!
Way cool... I need to get my buggy on You Tube, but I am rebuilding it right now and going to give it new paint. I worry about your Oil cooler & filter on the wing though... What happens if you roll it and tear of your components fifty miles from camp?? Mine is mounted on a custom frame that is mounted off the back engine fire wall to protect it, just in case. Mine is street legal too, which is way cool for Mojave National Park and Death Valley fire road exploring!
I got a 68 that Im trying to Baja but I cant figure out how to raise the sustention on it maybe Im just stupid and its something rely obvious but any one got any tips
What suspension are you running on it? I'm working on a '69 baja. The person i bought it from never took it offroad. Its gonna need some work to switch it back to off-road.
I am running Fox 2.0 coilovers all around, 10 inch in the front, 14 in the back. The front has extended 3 inch trailing arms "link pin front end" and the back are 3x3 boxed trailing arms. Custom shock towers on the front, shocks mounted to the cage on the back.. If anyone want's hi-rez pictures on how I build it, send me your email and i will send them to you...
Are you talking about the rear torsion bars? If you are going to mount coilovers you will want to remove the torsion bars. You can get these covers for the torsion housing that have a hiem joint mounted to it which connects to the trailing arm plate. What's your email, I can send you pictures of what I did.
how do you get the wheels out past the body? i want to get a baja bug for my first car and i think that the look with the wheels out farther looks awesome
There is a somewhat major problem with your plan. Legally, your wheels can't extend more than four inches past the outside of the fenders. This baja bug is obviously not street legal.
Thats because I live in the middle of the US and they actually enforce those laws up here. They have even mentioned it on TV. Trucks to be exact, which is on SPIKE. They have had a couple vehicles with that situation. My cousin has even gotten a ticket because his truck's tires extended over seven inces past the fender.
Are you dumb? Does it fucking look like they are on the road with this car? Are dirt bikes street legal? How about ATV's? Then why the fuck does the bug need to be street legal is its not on the street? OMFG! It doesn't need to be street legal.
No, but you are right now. What if the person drove it there? What if he didn't want to take it on a trailer? And yes you can get dirt bikes in street legal form, or make it street legal yourself. Just add signals, a horn, and a liscence plate. My Kawi is street legal. And in Europe you can get street legal quads. Here is an idea. Instead of venting pointlessly on YouTube, why don't you go out and play some little league baseball or something. Honestly......
just brought a baja for myself and the rear suspension is a little worn, its got coil over shocks, i was wondering what the advantages of the fox 2.0's were over cheap coil overs???
awesome. I wanted to see that bug catching some air! great song

@shiftyonevr4 Is it possible to get a decent negative camber curve out of the swing arm VW front suspension?
Or do you have to go to A arms?
Sweet Bug, btw.

GFCOFFROADCREW 2 years ago
Centerline wheels with Mikey Thompson tires, they are 3x3 boxed arms in the back.
shiftyonevr4 2 years ago
it looks like you have excessive positive camber when your tuning. are you worried that the front wheels will dig and cause a roll over?
elky5987 3 years ago
Naw, I would just flip the wheel the otherway. Plus the front end is so light that I doubt it would ever dig in...
