@evelynmh opp!! I've upset someone, i guess i may have been a bit hrash, but I still prefer the old stuff, this seems too restrained, if that makes sense?
Listening to this version actually makes me fall in love with Joe Jackson. A timeless classic that still sounds brilliant. Jackson is, and always will be, one of the most talented musicians around.
I have to agree with all the folks who say that Joe has never made a bad version of this song. I've heard several renditions and none have ever failed to tear my heart out. This one is absolutely gorgeous. Great post!
Interesting version. I came to this via the original version which always makes me feels how lost young men (and women) are at the incomprehensibility of the other sex's way of thinking. Listening to this I now feel the exasperation that after all these years we still can't understand the other sex. He wrote some very well-observed songs.
God given talent..He looks great...class act...would love to see him live...always liked him...cool find...thnx for sharing...it made me cry...dont know why though....memories?
JJ sounds so much smoother as a vocalist in a lowe register, but even when his voice breaks a little it adds to his performance. I haven't heard a bad version of this song yet, including the duet with Mindy Jostyn...
I saw Joe in concert in SF about 10 years ago, and it was just a fabulous concert. It was a smaller theatre setting and you could really see what a terrific musician he is.
why does this asshole have a bigger set than craig ferguson every time there is a musical guest on his show craig has to move his desk into corner and its the same damn show
Yeah, but Joe's on national television singing his own song whilst you are sitting on your bed in your mama's house watching. Joe ROCKS!!! Always has.
man! even back in breaking us i two.. he had a creepy serial killer face! I would trade my looks(I am a handsome man..lol) for a tenth of his talent!!
If I had a head like that I'd be prickly too, can you imagine waking up in the morning and having a mug staring back at you ? Jusy kidding, I think he's ADORABLE !! ( but not as cute as ) --Choefoe ; )
none of them play their stuff live the way it was recorded. And to me, the best ones are able to re-arrange their material in different ways each time they take it to the road. They sort of need to to keep from geting bored of themself.
As a musician, I totally understand and agree; but from the standpoint of the audience, I like to hear something close to the way it sounds it my head. He changed the key, the melody, the tempo, the instruments, everything BUT the lyrics.
So to me, as it stands, it's a completely different tune. Not bad, just different.
if you listen closely to the original the key is the same, the little ostinate hook that the guitar plays is there, too. the song got rearranged because there is no point in trying to replicate the sound of an 80s band with a piano.
Yes, you're correct, it's the same key. The Melody of the song is just completely different, and yes, this song could be completely replicated because the guitar part could be duplicated by the keyboard. Everything's the same, but it's still different and still pisses me off.
this is so touching. just love this guy and the way he carries his songs through life and experience. this song moved me way back when it first came out. you have so much to say about love, joe
The media created a bizarre Joe Jackson vs Elvis Costello fixation back in the early 80's. It was terribly absurd as both gents were and remain incredibly talented in their own right. I saw Joe at a concert in Toronto and he blew me away. Gorgeous thoughful lyrics and an amazing talent.
cellphones, texting, video games, those rotten poems they call RAP,whatever is in Mommy and Daddy's medicine cabinet, reality TV,tricked out Hondas, the internet, pants that have crotches that go down to your knees..Well, you get the idea..
I truly feel bad for the current generation of kids. Thay have gotten completely ripped off in the music department. They don't have the Joe Jacksons, Elton Johns, Billy Joels, etc. REAL talent. All kids have today is disposible entertainment, with ZERO staying power. Sad.. How did it happen?
I agree. Each generation thinks they have it "better" than the previous, but I think it is the opposite - the quality of life, in general, has gone downhill. Instant gratification is overrated. Maybe we are becoming the society that DEVO sang about!!!
Ask me about this!I'm one of this new generation and I live in the most terrible music place (Greece). The things they hear are not only rap,but more stupid music!Fortunately,a friend of mine can understand the real music,we listen to Joe Jackson and leave the others hear their stupid 'dark rock' music.
What a lazy, lazy opinion. Fact is there is so much out there that is outstanding. There's probably just alot more crap than there was 30 years ago...

just because he has "emotional angst" does not make him talented. I know a few guys at the sanitorium who ha emotionl angst yet sound like shit.... Joes one of them, sorry dear fans, truth is the truth... great songwriting though, just let other artist sing them, e.g. Bernie Taupin, Prince, etc..
Check out his biography of his early years if you can get your hands on it. It's called 'a cure for gravity'...it covers the early years up until the release of Look Sharp. He is a fine writer...not only a great musician but a sensitive soul living in harsh times.
AZ, I agree 110% BTW, does anybody know how many different ways Joe rearranged "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" I've seen him in concert 3x in LA and each time he did it a different way. Each time was amazing too!
Only the 50% of the singers can sing in normal situations.Joe is one of them who can sing everywhere and sound more beautiful than in the studio. He was born to make music.
joe Mangiaspogarrone passed away, alas, but Joe J. is still alive.Certainly a mistake caused by ressemblance of names. (btw keith kloszwschworticz is very well, god bless him)
Saw Joe do this song as a duet with Joy Askew in Boston in 1990, totally blew away everyone in the audience. That duet version is his best, great song no matter how it is sung.
gilbysiccama, there is a studio version with Joy Askew on the 'Stranger Than Fiction' (Joe Jackson song not the movie) CD single which was released in 1991. Might be able to find a copy of it on ebay.
I don't think JJ has been marginalized by anyone. He has made certain artistic choices on his own will, some popular, some not, all worth listening to. Those who know understand that Joe never has been and will never be marginalized.
Lovely, Joe. A unique voice and a great example of how often real talent is marginalized in the recording industry. His back catalog speaks volumes. Whose the man?
Sorry, not on patch on the original version, like watching a washed up singer at the end of the pier.
