Maybe I'm ignorant, but can't a horse be great at both Dressage and jumping if trained properly. I know they kind of change modes in the different events but as long as the horse has solid basic training couldn't do just about anything up to it's athletic ability under control?
Great yes. The greatest... I dunno. Eventing is cool because it requires dressage and jumping. The great dressage master Wallter Zettl excelled in both dressage and jumping. He said he won in jumping events not because he had the fastest horse, but because he could turn his horse. If all could, would he have won?
i think once you get to this level of dressage its kinda hard to change into the different style of jumping. besides, im sure she wouldnt want to risk one of her best horses legs on a jump that big. i know horses at a lower dressage level that also jump, but i think once you get to this level of professionalism, you kinda focus on one discipline.
I wasn't just talking about her, but in other styles of riding you see the same horse running top times in timed classes (speed events) then the same horse within hours performs excellently in a western pleasure class. I think this is very similar. It demands a very intelligent horse and rider of course.
As a comparison look at human athletes. A few have attempted to play in more than one professional sport at a time (Bo Jackson). A few have tried to change professional sports. In both cases it has not lasted long or they failed to achieve to the highest levels.
Yeah I understand, I just think a great horse and rider can still compete at high levels if the stars line up...But obviously as you pointed out I don't think they'd be the best in the world at it.
It would be one super horse to do grand prix in both disciplines well. There are of cases where jumpers are injured in the pastern, and shouldnt jump high, so theyre switched over to dressage where theres less stress put on it. I would be amazed if a horse bred for jumping got up to prix st.george, it wouldnt have the movment of others bred for it, but it could happen. Dressage horses need to be a little 'special' once they get to 4th level + which is something that isnt desired in a jumper.
While managed breeding can improve the odds of a horse being able to perform at Grand Prix, or any high level sport, it is entirely possible for a horse to get there without it. The first horse Anky took to Grand Prix was a grade horse ;-) Karen O'Connor just won (2007) individual gold and lead the US to team gold in eventing at the Pan Am games on a card caring 4:3 Shetland pony named Theodore... Of course Eventing has Dressage elements as well ;-)
Are you saying a horse that can jump at g prix level isn't "special" like a 4th + level Dressage horse? Your comment doesn't really make sense. I still think the ultimate horse trained appropriately could do well in both at high levels. I think it's harder for the trainer to do more than one discipline at a time. Why limit yourself if you consider yourself the best. (This is not directed at any particular trainer)
good point..you can notice how much they have to fight their horse to set them up meer strides before the jump.
it shows why they need all that fancy tack-the big nosebands and the harsher bits. if they couldnt set up their horses the way they have to, i cant imagine how many poles would be on the ground!
She really rides beautifully but unfortunatly I saw her training and warming up... there is nothing beautiful to see :S altough I think she is okay as person xD
Wow! She is Amazing. I saw her when she did that demo and it inspired me to take dressage lessons..but i haven't. Anyone know the dressage freestyle i believe that is to the song 'Sexy Back'??
It's her "Partout's Tango" freestyle and was composed specially for her by Cees Slings and Victor Kerkhof. It's on the CD and DVD "Anky's Music". It's really a beautiful piece of music and suits this horse well I think!!!
Such an amazingly tallented horse, but dressage should be displaying the horse's natural brilliance, not this over restraint and stiffness - hurts to watch, that poor beautiful horse.
I was there too :) It was defanatly the highlight of the event for me! (aside from Canada winning the nations cup!). I got to meet her after and get her autograph... she is amazing!
What is the song in this video called. LOL

I'd like to see her take one of those jumps -- bet you she would'nt be able to stop her horse around this big field : )

Most of the people jumping those jumps can't stop their horses either.

i dont understand why she is in the jumping arena and is not even jumping ! like, she is going up to the jump but just turns!! can anyone explain
angwit6 4 years ago
a) She is not a jumper. Her horses aren't trained to jump 5 ft jumps.
b) She is doing a demo at the Spruce Meadows Masters between events. A show jumping competition. She did several demos and even did some clinics.
c) Spruce Meadows supports all equine activities. Look at their web site.
