Graduated 1981 from LSU - very sad to see how it all came to an end as have fond memories of the place, notwithstanding the fact that academically it was complete waste of time, and was completely geared up for teaching training, which I was not, and was treated merely as a guinea pig for non- BEd degrees
@TartanAesSedai You probably pulled me a couple then... Returned again to the LSU video to remind myself of the past... It was a different place in the early 90s to what it seems to have become since. The bar was better than the Ref.
During my wasted time at LSU 93-97 it was just crap. The accommodation was crap the bar was crap, the staff were almost all crap too.... and the FOOD - double crap!!
Good riddance to bad memories as far as I am concerned!!
Just came across this video and I'm so shocked to see what has become of my beloved LSU ! I studied combined studies from 1993-1997 and cannot believe what happened just a few years after I left !!! I always had nostaglic images of reunion parties in years to come, but now looks like I wouldn't even recognise The Avenue if I ever visited Southapton again.... Nights in KAOS, drinks in the Alex, wild nights in the Union Bar, lazy hazy sundays in the pub on the Common - what was it called again ?
@Winiboy Pub on the common was called 'The Cowherds'. video so sad...met my husband there 1991-5 BEd (him English me Theology)! Happy days, long live the memories.
Purely objectively it was a dump that had to go, a Mickey Mouse college handing out mostly awful degrees taught by mostly poor lecturers in surroundings best described as "modest". I doubt any of those who studied there in the late 90's have got where they're at on the back of a degree from LSU.
Nice cocktails in the bar though and disco's cheesier than a truck full of Dairylea, well had to post something to justify the thousands of debt :D)
The very recent comments all seem to be from people who were there in the 90s - I studied there in the early 80s, well before Chitnis was brought in. What his long term role was in more sinister terms I do not know, but don't judge LSU as being always like that. I had to visit mid 90s and was appalled. And I do remember Adrian Smith, with much affection.
Bit sad but i've got a fantastic job paying stupid loads of money. Had it not been for the LSU helping me get my BA in History and Politics (92-95) would i have got this ! Maybe not...but i have and it's thanks to LSU as a whole and me for sticking at it.
Shambolic indeed. As a mature research student there in the nineties I attended staff meetings and was appalled by the cavalier attitude of senior management and lecturers. "Accept any student" and "offer any course" to increase numbers - no matter LSU did not have the staff to teach, say, sports studies. I left after 18 months without a qualification. Most lecturers moved to Southampton University - despite the lecturer's own poor records.
I wasted 4 years of my life being 'taught' in this shambolic college '93-97. They were right to shut it. Shame I didn't quit before it became an embarrassment on my CV. Blame the management and their property dealing, the staff and their poor co-ordination and how they all lost focus on US who paid for it all...
@DmanEyes i was there for less than a year in 93. Met some great people and had a lot of fun, but the education was awful so I transferred out. Sad to see the place in this state though.
I agree with you all. This is so sad. So many good times had here. I drove down Archers Rd the other day and I could'nt even tell where my halls of residence (2B Archers Rd) used to be. It's all gone!
You can see some photos of New College before and after the demolition on my wesite, seeing as Youtube will not let me post the link for some reason, go to that well known search engine that begind with G and search for garyreggae photos
so so sad. Watching this was so powerful, remembering people, places, the bar, the Going Down Balls, interesting people and mad mad moments. 4 years all compacted into the space of one horribly sad video. Like others, I almost wish I hadn't seen it.
i know what you mean so sad.RIP LSU many happy memories.Exams in the gym, grad in the chapel getting drunk in the bar.picking messages in the pigeon holes all gone BAhonsHist eng 92-95
I studied Combined Studies at LSU between 1982 and 1985. I am completely horrified at the devastation of this once prestigious college. Shame on all those who let this happen. It breaks my heart to see such a fine institution fall to rack and ruin. I had such good times here and that leaves such a hollow feeling inside.
@stevebon1964 Well said. It's a shame I didn't find out about this until TODAY. Weird how none of my old Uni mates mentioned it either. Talk about behind the times - everyone has gone their separate ways. The excuse will be asbestos but you're right, general upkeep was non-existent. Easy to justify demolition if a building is deemed 'condemned'
This is really sad... BTh hons 1989-1992 and MTh 1993-94. It leaves a hollow feeling; as many others, loads of great times and great memories. Reall poor Southampto City Council and Universtiy allowed this.
Oh my god. why? lots of happy memories of LSU. Studied BA(hons) QTS 1994-1998. Small and intimate, yet friendly and inviting. anyone know what they propose to do with the site? suerly they can't be knocking down the chapel or the white building (can't remember what it was called). Waste of a building! RIP
This is a sad end to a very important part of Southamptn's History. My aunt was an a Nun here and taught Religion and Pschology in the 80's. My sister graduated here in 1987 as did my mother who did a MA at the LSU. God (sic) the time we had here coming down most weekends and partying! OH well R.I.P LSU
Well that was sobering. I studied art and psychology there between '95 and '98 and was gutted when I heard about the closure. What's the music on here by the way?
1996-2000 look at our LSU..! We were the poorer cousin of Soton Uni we had something far better than anything Highfield could ever offer, 80p vodka on a wed night before KAOS called, safe in the knowledge you were having some of the best nights of your life. Brilliant video i felt very sad seeing a place i loved & called home for 4 years left to crumble. Dont even get me started on the BAR i can still see the cheesy disco or watching our rugby boys initiate another poor fresher into their ranks!
Must admit I've not driven passed recently ... tho' I suspect that demolition is well advanced if not complete. Next time I'm in So'ton I'll take a peek.
Thanks for your comment. Since I explored it (which was only a few weeks back), it's changed even more. More parts have be stripped, and most of the site has been passed into the hands of a property developer. Also the Avenue Building has passed into the hands of the police, who've been busy training in it ... blowing holes in walls and so on.

What a shame. Had many good times at LSU 91-95 B'Ed Hons History. Pulled many a pint from behind that bar, which looks like it has been walled off!

Was the chapel saved? Don't Google Map it now if you're nostalgic - TRAD HALLS FOREVER :-)

Sad - RIP, was there 1998 until 2001. Trad halls overlooking the weird swimming pool roof. Why was NC closed anyway?

0:28 - There used to be a miniature ring of church bells stood there - I moved them to South Stoneham church in 2007!

Really sad to see LSU like this. Iwas there twice 1990- 1993 BA Theology and in 1996 - 1997 PGCE. They are using the site for buiding new housing.
