The riots weren't started by a racial incident, & there were in fact few racial incidents during the riots, but civil rights were the main underlying issue since most of the DPD was white back then & a good # were racists & too authoritarian to all citizens. I remember seeing some of the footage of the riots on the national news at the time. As a 7 yr. old then, I didn't understand it much, but I knew it was a mess.
Detroit was a great, beautiful city. I believe those tents at 3:46 are not for those who were left without a home (after they burned their own homes down). Those tents were for the firefighters who could not stay at the fire stations within the city. I was very young but I remember hearing that the firefighters were shot at when they went to extinguish the fires .
After centuries of oppression, racism and discrimination, it leaves some with very little ways to survive and after being left with nothing more to do and your adversaries have been against your success and devise plans to keep you under, some people, out of desperation find other ways to survive. I don't know how the loan programs were back then during extremely rampant racism against blacks, but nowadays it is still difficult...imagine back then....

(It is interesting to note that more whites were arrested for sniping at police and troops, than were blacks). This can happen again. And probably will, as our deteriorating economy continues to increase the numbers of poor and unemployed.

From what i've been told... the reason blacks burned their own neighborhoods is because none of them owned any property, they all rented from whites. So that was thier way to "hurt" the white man, burn down his property. A few businesses posted signs out front that said "black owned" and they got spared. But after the fires, the neighborhood were ruined economically, and now can't support any business, black owned or not.

The riots weren't started by a racial incident, & there were in fact few racial incidents during the riots, but civil rights were the main underlying issue since most of the DPD was white back then & a good # were racists & too authoritarian to all citizens. Remember 'the Big 4' or more, they bopped anybody if they felt like it. The looting was done by many young whites as well as blacks & mixed groups were filmed looting on Grand. Blvd. etc. & many whites were also arrested etc.

Detroit was a great, beautiful city. I believe those tents at 3:46 are not for those who were left without a home (after they burned their own homes down). Those tents were for the firefighters who could not stay at the fire stations within the city. I was very young but I remember hearing that the firefighters were shot at when they went to extinguish the fires .

I lived in Detroit in 1967. This was not a 'race riot'. Instead, it was an uprising of the urban poor. (It is interesting to note that more whites were arrested for sniping at police and troops, than were blacks). This can happen again. And probably will, as our deteriorating economy continues to increase the numbers of poor and unemployed.

From what i've been told... the reason blacks burned their own neighborhoods is because none of them owned any property, they all rented from whites. So that was thier way to "hurt" the white man, burn down his property. A few businesses posted signs out front that said "black owned" and they got spared. But after the fires, the neighborhood were ruined economically, and now can't support any business, black owned or not.

When Gordon Lightfoot first recorded this a Windsor radio station refused to play it, even by request, because their advertising capital came a lot from Detroit. A Canadian station refusing to play a song by a Canadian artist. Shame.

I looked at the pictures before 67 and it looked bad. Full of graffiti and few broke down buildings. Tell me if I'm wrong because I would love to see it like pleasantville. Tell me that was probably pics from july 67.

@itizwattitiz Yes, Detroit was a beautiful city and an exciting place to grow up. But my version of the decendtion is that from 1961 to the present Detroit has elected liberal city politicians to run this city. When you try and do the same programs, entitlements, and free handouts and expect different results, that's just insanity. For over fifty years this city has been controlled by Democrates, lets start there.

@itizwattitiz i think you mean descent. no it didn't start in july 67 - the suburbs and the roads that lead to them were being built in the 50's . have you ever heard of the practice of block busting . also do you think it was an accident that all those new factories were built in the suburbs . oh and by the way those freeways that lead to the suburbs wiped out the most established black communities in detroit . no what happened to detroit was planned .

@KarelYalek I agree I feel that a lot of the black people out there distance and continue to want to be distanced from the White people. Look at some of the things that City council wanted to do... African town?? what can be more segregated then this.. (A part of town that would be all Black Businesses) This is the kinda a thinking and alike that keeps Detroit Moving Backwards!

@KarelYalek Acutally if you look up your facts the national guard which where white did most of the killing blacks and whites. Hell they even shot a 6 year old white girl in her house. The government and police did more damage to the city than if they would have just left it alone. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
