Richard, having studied theoretical physics briefly in college I can say that the irony of your "Newtonian Model" analogy is that Newtonian physics is actually wrong, but only on minute margins. It describes physical reality on earth almost perfectly well but not on cosmological scales. Which is fine, since we are building buildings and bridges on planet earth and not in black holes. I think this applies neatly to your analysis of economic models as well!
