Khodorkovsky was arrested because he opposed Putin, who was threatened by him. Khodorkovsky committed no crime. There is no democracy in Russia. Few of my friends were in Siberia & they were shocked by the conditions there. Russia has long way to go towards justice, democracy, human rights, etc.

Khodorkovsky is a brave man. His real crimes were having a lot of money and being opposed to Putin. He was threatening. Russia is a little insecure about things like that because the government owns 60% of the news papers and freedom of the press in Russia is plagued with self-censorship for fear of a government that does things like this to people who are opposed.

Of course the authorities won't let Khodorkovsky die, cause if he does then Moscow would have to answer alot of uncomfortable qeustions like why didn't he get a fair trail, and also why focus on  Khodorkovsky when other oligarchs who did worse are roaming free (answer, they swore loyalty to big bad Vlad and K did not).
