  • I love this version! He gives him a nice touch to the song :)

  • Oh lady gaga.. get her now to sort this woman's negativity out!! Give her a wig! :)

  • Im 13 and Im transitioning. I love this song.

  • i'm 16 and I've recently decided to go natural. This is now my theme song :)

  • We are our hair! Love starts from the head to toe! :(

  • @1DonNazarite i think you're misunderstanding the song

  • @kshelly17 teach me about it. I am willing to learn. I think I may have got it, I just didn't like her message. Plus she made her money huh. But please drop some knowledge on me.

  • @1DonNazarite it seems to me as if she's talking about the stigma against certain ways of wearing your hair and that she's trying to say that the way someone wears their hair isn't an indication of their character. Promoting self-love actually =)

  • @kshelly17 Our hair plays such a significant role in our character, we are in fact our hair. When you have natural hair you seem smarter, and look like you know yourself. At lease know yourself; and by chance you might love yourself and see how crazy weaves and perms actually are and look:)

  • Sounds good live

  • Im 15 nd my hair reacntly broke off had to cut it was really upset about it but this song.... makes everyhting better!

  • am can anyone answer me i wana get baptised but my pastor told me i have 2 cut my hair because i have a dread locks and it is not suitable 4 a Christian wat should i do ?

  • @TheLovable4 dont listen to him becuz god loves you for you and kno one else can tell what to do with your hair or anything else but him so keep your hair and go to another church to get baptised. any human being is suitable to be christian god put you in the the world and if it wasnt suitable to have dreads and be christian then he wouldnt of let you get them okay so dont do

  • @halia3 thanks so much i really appreciate it

  • @TheLovable4 your welcome :)

  • @TheLovable4 Baptism has nothing to do with your hair, Baptism is a picture of the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. It shows that you believe that He dead on the cross (Standing in the water) and was buried (your entire body under the water) and resurrection (you are bought back up out the water), It has nothing to do with your hair. Remember you did not have to do anything to be saved, Christ did it all for you.

  • @steelwall76 thanks so much cause i was confused tank u a lot god bless

  • @TheLovable4 U r Welcome

  • @TheLovable4 thats not true it doesn't matter what kind of hair style you have my pastor son has dreds it sounds like he doesn't like it jesus excepts you as is and so should your pastor

  • I just recently started listening to India Arie and, I must say, a woman of her demeanor is so damn sexy.

  • 3:47 is India being her true self. Her adthe guitarist have a good chemistry, laughing at industry trying to oppress genuine uncensored art.

  • Loved it besides dudes singing, just stick to the guitar the...thanx!

  • soo damn beatiful

  • Two words . . . LOVE IT!!!!!!!

  • @djsmith871 Two words ... ME TOO!

  • i am not my hair! i am not this skin!

  • Mature, sophisticated and elegant is DEFINITELY what I was going for with this change. I'm growing up, about to turn things around and take on responsibility, new territories, become a woman, if you will. I didn't want my hair color taking hold of me. I honestly felt like a prisoner of it, and if I'm going to become a woman, I'm a prisoner of nothing and no one. I guess, bit by bit, I'm gaining independence, and I figured my hair would be a nice start to kick off this new phase. ;);)

  • wow

  • AMANZING... YEAH PEOPLE NEED TO BE EDUCATED

  • AWESOME SONG!!!

  • corta corta corta corta corta

  • Some people pick on me about going natural...but then this song instantly come into my head and I feel better.

  • @Born2Sing02 dont worry about people. Going natural is being respondsible and not going with the crowd and continously getting relaxers will they break your hair. Eff em, do you!!!

  • uh first of all to lkjh813 not all black people play victims and there has been many times where another race says that are better then us,(us as a whole) i find it very racist to say that oh and that glad to see she has a whita guitarist really you need a life

and by theb by i think its safe to say you didnt vote OBAMA .......and i love this song

  • does anyone have the guitar tabs for this ?

  • I'm a white girl. I dont really know her but i love this song and "ready for love". I just dont understand why she speaks as the black women wolud be said to be uglier than white. Its just boring. Black people should move on and realize that nobody says they are less than us.... they arent victims for God' sake and they have a lot of priorities against us (university etc.)

Anyway i love the song and its godd to see that she has a white guitarist. Black artist usually avoid white musicians...

  • @lkjhg813 @lkjhg813 The editors of Psychology Today thought it was a good idea to post a blog item calling black women ugly...Satoshi Kanazawa's post, "Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?" appeared Sunday and quickly circulated around the blogosphere. It drew a great deal of criticism, which led to the post being pulled. Please check this article out as it may give you some understanding. This article was published in May 2011. Go To cnn.com and do a search.

  • @lkjhg813 ur white and you mean well but you really don´t no what your talking about ! Black woman are said to be uglier on a daily basis and no alone by white people ! BUT by blacks 2. Light skin is better than dark skin, wavey and curly hair is good hair. Bad hair is nappy. big lips small eyes big noses are ugly, small lips bigger eyes and smaller noses are beautiful. When in fact this isn´t true black people carry a lot of complex issues with in their souls and u can´t just say get over it!

  • @lkjhg813 black artists dont avoid white musicians. ur a white girl and dont understand anything obviously. nobody SAYS they are less than white people. thats how blacks have been TREATED throughout HISTORY. there is also division within the black community and thats what india is singing about. black people dont have priority against anyone. affirmative action is a JOKE. read a history book, or graduate which ever comes first

  • THIS LADY WILL FOREVER BE A GREAT SINGER WITH SOUL!!!!LOVE THE LIGHT THAT SHINES THROUGH HER

  • 6 PEOPLE ARE THEIR OWN HAIR AND AREN'T A SOUL...

  • I just don't get how the REAL MUSIC gets the least amount of views ...

  • great shaking ;)

    świetnie potrząsa ;)

  • I love my natural hair =)

  • @MsJoy4ever me too!

  • I LOooovveeeeeee the ending! :)

  • This song is more than its lyrics. :)

  • love. love. love. love. love. looooooooooooove!

  • Love this song

  • This is a better song about loving oneself and hair not getting in your hair than Whip My Hair

  • Keep doing your thang. Your music is beautiful. I love it . Its what the world needs.

  • I love it!! I think i like this video better than the original! She looks like she enjoys her music sooooo much and has so much appreciation for the Gifts God has given her and respect for her body, the world, different races, and so on! Its so awesome to know that raw, real, RELEVANT talent still exist. she is the role model for any young child of any race!! Go head India!! you Got it!! Idk who that dude is, but i like him too!

  • i love this

  • She beats Beyonce anyday...i like Beyonce but India is setting a good example for young impressionable to love who they are, not what they are..and of course to be HAPPY with what God gave them... God made you just the way you were meant to be...flaws and all.

  • @SEEdestinyCLEARLY We are flawless--naturally. :--)

  • India Arie has got to be the most talented singer. She doesn't need all of the auto tuning that all other singers need. She has a naturally b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l voice. I love her music. I would LOVE to see her in concert!!! Her songs actually have really great meanings and they just make you feel good to listen top them. Video is my life's theme song. ;)

  • I've always loved you Indie. Great reality about our hair.

  • sing it gurl!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sing it gurl!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • luv,luv,luv india

  • Graceful and blessed this should be your name. With so much talent and amazing personality, she stands out as one of the best this decade. I love listening to your music your voice has the power to calm us down.

  • This song touches my soul.

  • @missmaniapoto18 My God.. I've bursted into tears.. Thanks India. xoxo

  • i <3 <3 <3 :)

  • tell it india,,, i feel u!

  • I know thats right!!!!!!!!!!

  • So obvious and over-stated.

  • Simply beautiful.

  • India is the essence of beauty.

  • i love this song

  • give the guy the major credits on the performance!

  • When i first heard this song in the sixth grade, i go to a mostly white school where the girls have long straight hair. I wanted to fit it, but when i heard this i had this huge moment of realization. I'm a freshman now, and i've been all natural and myself for three years. Thank you India Ari for helping me find myself

  • everyone of all races should be proud of their natural hair. :)

  • this is too beautiful

  • This song helped me get over severe depression and horrendous self image issues. It helped be believe in myself and not to care what anyone else thought about me or the way I look. It's not about what's on the outside and what people see but what's inside, what makes you who you are.

    Thanks You India Arie.

    Awesome

    xxx

  • @Mavarice yeah, music is empowering and heals the mind

  • @Mavarice i hear you. i am working through issues myself. i too appreciate this sister to the fullest. i am happy to hear of your breakthrough; i hope you are able to go forward and help others. peace to you friend, and all the best.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • This is a great message. I love this song. I remember the first time I heard this song... 2006 on Mtv

  • I think this topic is a "you have to experience it to know what it feels like" Hair is a HUGE part of defining a person in our society, as well as soooo many others. It shapes the face, upholds/defies social norms, and is a big part of us. Now, if you are a person who is told your hair is not acceptable, and can not be natural or it will be unacceptable/ugly...that is a big deal.

  • @alexisb1988 so you hate songs that are uplifting?????? -_-

  • This is an awesome video.

  • I just want my hair healthy lol!!! But my soul within is whats important

  • you know what hurts? having a white person tell me they love my natural hair but getting NO love from my own people and hateful remarks. stop with the self hate people. only then can we truly be free =)

  • @prtdiva Its sooo true what you are saying!!! Yes it does hurt!!! I love my natural my hair, and to hell with anyone who does not think so!

  • @prtdiva im black and I LOVE IT NATURAL!

  • @prtdiva you are right, you are so right

  • IMPORTANT MESSAGE to all the haters:

go to listen to your usual crap music from whores and wankers, and leave her alone!

  • @alexisB1988 , you have issues..!! OMG... first class stupidity

  • @alexisB1988 I went to your site. I can understand why you would think that she is "awful". It's because you are too weird to get it. She's actually quite wonderful.

  • @duazido hahahah

i really hate this kind of songs and singers,

    but chacun son gout

  • this song would make me cry

  • This is one of the few black female artists that I love. She has passion, and I can feel the song run through me, Only a few of us actually understand that music is about passion and how you think of your life or other's. Not about bitches and stuff like that. I want to hear music about life, not about how much money and how you live being wealthy.

  • @AoifeStair i agree with you thou i do think its okay to be alil agressive about your ambitions. ;)

  • @AoifeStair Agreed!

  • Bill Mueller on guitar and background vocals. He was a talent in the metro Detroit area in hay-day of rock'n'roll in the 70's and 80's. Good to see you with India doing great music.

  • She is beautiful!! She is not your typical pretty however, her beauty is something that radiates from deep down below and shines outward......a rare type of beauty that I wish more women would percieve. She writes and performs music with purpose, that inspires all walks of life. She truly is one of my favorite artists of all time!!

  • OMG GIRL U BETTA SING!! WOW I LOVE IT!

  • WOW I Wish I was that dude!!! Not only is he a white guy playing guitar for India but he's singing background vocals for india TOO

Also, LOL @ the people who are criticizing and discussing her hair styles.

Did you miss the point of the song? LOLLLLL. She ain't her hair, people.

  • Her songs are inspirational. She must have been talked about real bad when she was growing up.

  • I L O V E THIS SONG! I L O V E INDIA ARIE ..... thank you for keeping it real, in a world that forces us to constantly question what we look like and to ignore the important things in life!

  • I LOVE her voice <3333333333

  • india arie has a nice voice

  • who is that playing the guitar and singing with her?

  • ohhh shes a jack johnson fan! look at her skirt!

  • i got my first relaxer at age 6...been on that creamy crack ever since....

  • sing it girl!

  • She must have read my mind!

  • ily

  • ...Its true..."im not my hair, im not my skin... im the soul that lies within."

  • Well I just commented on her youtube video for her song I Am Ready For Love, about her hair. The hair looks awful. She could have dreadlocks or plaits. What is it with the big hair. When I watch or listen to an artist, I have a subconscious visual of her or him, and I just don't get the hair on this artist. Hence, I only view one song on youtube of hers - I Am Ready For Love. At least the song detracts from the hair. Hair is just as important becauise it sits above her mouth and face.

  • @srebrenika Why Comment? If Its Not U,Is Something Going On In Your Life To Talk About Her?? Damn Leave Her Alone,She's Pretty,So Shush!!!!

  • @bjkdie This is a comments medium. I happen to love her song I Am Ready for Love but I don't like her hair. It detracts from her looks. I would not buy her records unless I heard them before I saw her. I am sorry but she is competing with lots of artists for our money and our attention. I would never have listened to her music if it wasn't for Big Mike from American Idol last year to sing her song. Just on visuals alone, I would never have listened to her music. Sorry, that's me.

  • @srebrenika I feel wat u sayin u are entitled to your opinion but i just want to say me personally dnt judge on cover i do on talent but that just me i hope you try it sometime. :)

  • @Miszy5 okay. But more people will listen to her music if she did something with her hair. But okay, so I have said enough

  • @srebrenika So you are basically falling for the gimmick. That is what you are saying.

    Which is sad.

  • @ACTINGDRAMA The whole "i dont care about my hair, i love the natural look" thing is a gimmick too at the end of the day. Being conscious is a gimmick, think about it. If you don't get it now, you'll get it someday

  • @DatTuc1 If you are doing it because of what is cool for the moment, then yes you are falling for the gimmick period.

Black people fucking up their natural hair with relaxers is a damn gimmick.

My NATURAL hair isnt and extreme hairstyle.

  • @srebrenika Talent is not represented by image my dear, it comes from within! Rihanna is beautiful but she aint got half the talent that this woman's got...so check yuhself!

  • @coppersulphate002 Amen... there are all these "beautiful" singers out there but its like really... i want to see them put some soul in it and not just take their clothes off ans swing their hair. pick up an instrument,

  • Love this song!! I had long hair before being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and I've lost all my hair twice from chemotherapy. Being a woman of color, I was "envied" because my hair was natural and not a weave. Now, it is halfway the length it was but, that is not important to me. I'm alive today and I thank God for every minute. Living is more important than the length of someone's hair. I AM NOT MY HAIR is my new theme song for survival. Thank you, India!! xoxo

  • @TheMillionheiress ... Thank you.. I have Lupus, and due to the medication I was taking 4 it I have big black blothches all over my face, neck, and arms. The doctors said, " Even if you stop talking it they won't go away, and you must take this medication." I haven't taken it in a year, and the blotches are still there, but so am I. My health is like 100% better ( God's food ) You help make me feel so much better... I am not my skin!!!
