you sure do have to know someone to truly miss the person they were. none of what you said makes any sense. and how can you miss his music when it's still around. i think it's an insult to the man and the people who did know him. i'm very thankful for what he brought to the world hence the reason i came to this page and have the username elliottsmithh. agree to disagree.
@elliottsmitth You don't have to know someone to miss them. Maybe we don't miss seeing Elliott every day, or how he laughed or someodd, but we miss the person we have heard him to be, we miss his music, and we miss what he brought to the world. Please try to take this into the consideration before hating on us.
Elliott Smith is like smoking weed, it would do a lot of people some good to smoke some Elliott. It might brake the one's that can't take the truth though.
This song is a treasure...I carried it around like a gift he left for me...he didn't want these songs released, so the story goes, because they were "his" songs to and for "himself." Back in 2003, I was mostly into metal, until I was told of "Elliott Smith" & his death from a knife through his own heart. That struck a chord, and Elliott saved my life when my medical issue (& it's physical agony) almost made me take it. I love this beautifully flawed man. The "grow up" clowns are simply CLOWNS
There used to be a wonderful sight that had much of his unreleased materials...I pretty sure it disappeared though. I do have cd copies of his 'unofficial live' materials, the either/or demos, a bunch of live shows (& some of his alcohol/drug era sets where he aborts a lot of songs), plus some excellent alt. versions, covers, etc. If I can get them put on the computer, I'll be glad to share it all for any who ask.
I'll finish what I recall (re: material) later: This song is a treasure...
So.., I know there was some issue over material he recorded personally, or for loved ones, which he was rather adamant they not be released. "Now You Wanna Show Me How" was one of those, and I think this was too.that said, elliott's music conveyed the sense of vulnerability unmatched..., his non-album tracks doubly so (Stained Glass Eyes, Going Nowhere, etc)- hearing these "not for public" songs, which are all so hauntingly personal, are a blessing to have: they are the only things left...
You can absolutely miss someone without knowing them personally....... Elliott's soul is in his music, maybe more than any other songwriter, he put his being into what he wrote, musically and lyrically. He's not here anymore, all that's left is the remnants of his soul, but I miss the person who created what he gave me. I miss his continuing presence in my life for creating new works of art to help me through life. He is dead from either murder or sadness.....I MISS HIM
I agree with you 100%. He is the only person I never knew, but miss this badly. I may not have known him, but listening to his music makes me feel like he knows me. It is so honest.
This song and True Love have been in my head for days now... they should release a CD with just unreleased or little known Elliott Smith songs, because he has so many that are so good.
@MrMisab umm...which version? Are you talking about the studio track, I had + Dancing on the Highway, From a Poison Well, Stickman, and a few more, sadly misplaced in a friend's shed in SoCal (he's in NYC). IF you are looking for (or want) his live versions, I have good quality live copies of his 1st version and the remake (studio) The early 1st verse: "true love is a rose, behind glass that's locked to get closed, 'cause it's way more expensive than anybody can earn..." I wished he kept that
@playsguitarandsings I have New Moon and while there are a lot of beautiful songs on it, I have 50+ unreleased/rare Elliott songs that aren't on an official CD. Some of my favorites: True Love, Place Pigalle, I Can't Answer You Anymore, Brand New Game, Abused, Now You Wanna Show Me How, The Enemy Is You, Stick Man, etc. Need I go on?
@stellarlove21 i absolutly love all those songs besides now you wanna show me how, ive only listened to it once and lately ive been in kind of a really good mood so it for some reason wasnt right for how i felt
You got it mixed up; his girlfriend locked herself in the bathroom because of an argument. Then in the emotion of it Elliott picked up a kitchen Knife and stabbed himself twice in the chest. But Forensics cant prove his death either way. Some fans believe Jennifer did it, i however think it was suicide. I really miss him
not heard this one before! usual high standard sad lyrics.he had that knack of getting to the core of human experience. amazingly im even having trouble with the nieghbours kids screaming as they play near my flat!

@valahogy How can you not miss him, you obviously don't appreciate his music, as much as most fans. Don't be such a douche.
goodmusicguy97 2 years ago
There is a difference, a big one.
His friends, his family and everyone close to him misses HIM.
We miss him as a musician and as an amazing person, but its no where near how much people who really REALLY knew him missed him.
I understand what you mean though
