The B-52 was originally designed to drop nukes. It's been here ever since the whole Russia and U.S. conflict. To have a plane here and in service that long means that this plane is powerful and much more useful than any other bomber.
The B-52 has proven it's worth, still in front line service and will be till 2040. That will be 85 years of continuous service from 1955 to 2040. I'd say the U.S. Air Force made a very wise investment back in 1952 when the B-52 B was ordered for service with the Strategic Air Command.
The B-52 definitely proved it's worth in several conflicts, all of which it was not designed for initially. It's no wonder the B-52 is still serving in front line service and is scheduled to continue until about 2040. Doing the math, that would 85 years of continuous service from 1955 to 2040. We'll need to get busy and design similar aircraft to take it's place.
B52. AC 130, F22, AH64 APACHE, A10 WARTHOG!! RECENTLY ONE NIGHT AT HOME IN SOUTH ALABAMA WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF HAVING 4 F22S FROM EGLIN, AN AC130U, AND SEVERAL APACHES, BLACKHAWKS, AND HUEYS FLYING OVERHEAD. WHAT A RACKET AND WE LOVED IT! THE SOUND OF FREEDOM! MY HAT IS OFF TO ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO FLY THESE AWESOME MACHINES AND PROTECT OUR FREEDOM!
The BUFF will stay in service until 2045. What a service record! You couldn't ask anymore out of an airframe. The B-52 is as bomber as bomber gets. It just emanates a sense of power.
34 of those were shot down during the 1972 Christmas Bombing of Hanoi, North Vietnam, from Dec 18 till Dec 29, 1972. AP reported "at this rhythm, the B-52s will soon disappear from sight!" Kudos for the Vietnamese Air Defense, for after that episode it was over for any carpet bombing of civilian areas! ;-)
@shillyshallyz There is no way in hell that 34 B-52's where shot down during the "lineBacker II/Christmas bombings" of '72.. Check your source dude..and the reason no more "carpet bombing of civillian areas" took place was the Vietnamese leadership decided to return to the negotiations table..MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !
@shillyshallyz Oh yes agreed, there was HUNDREDS of U.S. aircraft downed in Vietnam.. No doubt alot more than should have been due to Politicians running the show for the most part...but again there might have been 30 B-52's downed in the entire war, not the 34 in two weeks as you claimed..
@cyberarmy007 And the B-52 were designed to drop nukes, so really, you wanna be on the side that has B-52's. AC-130 may be a dangerous plane, but a B-52 carries missiles and bombs. It's much more dangerous
@xJacurutux yeah well it carpet bombs like an hell but i really dont want an AC130 over my head with 105 mm and 85 mm over my head
it halso has a gatling of some kind so i think it's like beast, so i would have called it daeth from above or angel of death because of it's angel flares
The penultimate Jet bomber. Ancient in every form of the word, but too effective to put out of service. Came close to the F-14 fate >.>
It's speed, range, and abilities are easily matched by a number of other aircraft, but none other has such an outstanding combat record or fear factor than the good ol BUFF.
It went from a machine of no return in vietnam, to a hell raiser in iraq. And who knows what in the future.
good video the b52 old but still effective since vietnam and the cold war.you probably saw the movie dr strangelove.its very impresive see this beauty in action.congratulations
Well, dangerous to it's aircrews anyway! I love the BUFF, but it wouldn't make it far against modern anti-air defenses, not without extra-heavy ECM defense and Wild Weasel escorts. There are more precise ways to drop a bomb, but if you need to take out a 1/2 mile piece of land, the B-52 is the plane! Actually, that's not true either. A B-1B can carry twice the bomb-load of the 52, and go faster while doing it. But the B-52 is still the cooler airplane, if ya ask me. I love how they sound.
Me too...I remember watching them when I was a kid from shore. As an adult, I'd park my boat at the end of the runway and lay back and watch them fly over and blow us around. Those were the days...
imagine a B-52's full payload of cluster bombs.

@1z1q A lot more US planes than only 34 B-52s were shot down, and their crewmen added to the 600+ US POWs in the "Hanoi Hilton"!

why you call it death from above???AC130 is much scarier to have over your head

Are you sure about that? A Mark 84 "Hammer" bomb with 2,000 Ib from a B-52 above your head proves the opposite!
