I remember looking forward to this movie for YEARS....then when it came out...meh. Guess I hyped it up in my head so much the real thing couldn't deliver.
@Johnlindsey289 Actually I'm a Trekkie, hard core, who loved it. It was everything I had hoped it would be! Not dumb down, not about flashy lens flares, but into the human adventure and into those who are Kirk, Spock, and the ship named Enterprise.
This movie absolutely sucked eggs... And yet I still loved it. When I saw in theatres, I described it thusly, "It's as if a group of amatuer-dramatics actors who also happened to be massive Trekkies (think the cast of fan productions like Star Trek: Excalibur) were given an infinite budget and a special effects department who were all stoned out of their minds and just... went... nuts."
As I said, terrible film, but definitely a case of "So Bad, It's Good." I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it...
I think you are all angry confused pessimistic sad people. Yes this isn't the old school science class version of trek I was raised on. It's the action version. What did you want the plot to be? 2 hours of Kirk studying for the Kobiashi Maru? You learn what a dithilium crystal is after about 40 years of watching Trek. Its about time we get to see the damn ship haul ass and blow shit up.
Well kiddos, after all the hype, the movie sucked. It was like watching a cartoon or a video game. Abrams obviously never watched a single episode of Star Trek -- in any of its incarnations -- in his life. Nor did he care. However, the audience-cattle mooved to the theaters in massive herds. So, unfortunately, we'll being seeing a repeat of this travesty. Oh well, nothing lasts forever. All good things come to an end. RIP, Star Trek.
@graciehunterII You're an idiot if you cant see how true to Star Trek Abrams made the movie. It had poor always getting into trouble, but managing to keep a smile Scotty. Always direct and to the point about what is, and what he isnt Dr. Mccoy, and so on and so forth. There had to be definate differences between the original series and the movie because all the characters in the movie are much younger than they were in the show.
You act like you were expecting this to be a fourth TOS season.
@DEATHBYFLYINGCDS Is that an actual language you're typing there, pal? Correct enough typos so that I can figure out what the heck you're desperately fumbling to say, and maybe we can have a discussion. In the meantime, enjoy watching the "Super Mario" version of Star Trek.
If Roddenbery hadn't been cremated, I would lay odds he would be doing 10k RPMs in his grave right now. They've basically turned Star Trek into a copy of Lost In Space. Even with the Star Trek Online novel "The Needs of the Many", there were many errors in the science. For example: How could Spock visually witness Vulcan's destruction being marooned on Delta Sigma light years away. The image would take YEARS to reach him, and we have only just begun to image extra-solar planets as dots.
@pedron03rm4n Exactly --- and that's why Trekkies were so appauled by it - we were all eager with anticipation that a new ST film was coming out, only to discover that Abrams did to Roddenberry's Star Trek what they did to the Transformers cartoons, Spider-man cartoons, Iron Man, etc -- turned it into a summer flick.
What always bothered me about this trailer was the exclusive NASA focus of the early space exploration soundclips in the background. Nobody who really knows anything about those times would do that.
Thumbs down, jackass! Like there aren't a dozen other postings of this clip on YouTube that weren't illegally recorded in a theater with a cheap-ass cell phone camera!
Actually, the Romulans go back in time to destroy the Federation (timeline A, which we all know and love); Spock to restore timeline B, follows the Romulans back in time to fix the "damage" and fails; thus creating timeline B, JJ Abrahms timeline, which no one will know or understand or even care I about I wager!
Gene Roddenberry will be spinning in his grave!
I will not be watching this "star trek"! Heresy! Heresy!
Agreed. Star Trek is really all about Mr Spock, and Zachary Quinto was a half decent Spock until he started making out with Uhura. That's where the movie went down the drain.
@greengrendel nah i thought it was cool i think the ships kinda act batter and more realistic and also think the script was writen better than any of the star trek films.... they made it cool to people who arnt star trek fans
As fans we've 2 main rules for a new film in the StarTrek franchise:
1) Must be faithful to Roddenberry ethos of a positive, evolved future for humanity, &
2) It should adhere to canon.
If it strays a bit, I can probably accept it. Especially, if it wins a new generation to Roddenberry's vision. So, as long as we avoid a 90210 in Space & the continuity flaws aren't extreme, it could be great. I'll w/hold judgment until then.
May the Great Bird of the Galaxy roost on your Home Planet!
cant wait to see this ive seen a few screenshots of star trek and i think its going to be great and its good they decided not to have the original kirk in because it would have spoiled it as he got killed off in generations anyways its spocks turn to pass the baton
sylar is in it he went to the future after he killed hiro and went under the name spock where he turned good thats why in the search for spock film he was still alive he cannot die!!!!!! think about it ppl !!!!!!!!

"The guy next to me puked!! Did anyone else puked or seen someone who has?"
I did. Rented it on DVD. Around the scene where they go to rescue his girlfriend who is stuck in the building I had to go outside and unload. Ironic as I rather enjoyed the film.
J.J. Abrams is the kind of guy who will do anything to keep the plot secret. He's a capable director and producer. I trust he'll make a movie not just for Trekkies, but for all moviegoers alike.

hey half of the sci fi movies are made by british directors, everything from Aliens to 28 days later. Star trek isnt every ones "cup of tea" but this trailer is sweet. Hey Dr Who isnt good agree with you on that one.
You know what go fuck yourself. You are the worst kind of human, anyone with half a brain would realize that humanity in Star trek is what we should strive to be like and not become assholes like you.
1126thmp has a good point. The Federation(although it's a "nice" federation) is a militaristic governmental organization. Exploring this topic could've led to some really good stories similar to what BSG has done. Good thinking. BSG can get a little overboard with it sometimes. I think TREK would've worked if it added just a touch more of fighting and conquest instead of techno-babble inventions to save the day.
Techno-babble is exactly what ruined the Star Trek franchise. Characters are lost against the warp drive/ray beam crappola. Just watch the new BSG and look how Star Trek seems unwatchable. Hopefully this movie will do something good for the franchise.
It can get in the way, to true. As the fact that BSG needed Dale Dye to do a two week military course with the actors. It was there complete ineptitude and inability to even feign acting like military personal that blew the series for me. I just couldn't take any of them seriously after season one.
You lot are useless fags! This looks the don, its got that epic feel to it which is sorely needed. You all cry about trivial details saying how it will be ruined; built using welding, JJ etc blah blah blah! Why don't you just wait n see instead of having a period! Its about time someone made an ST film that looked this good!
I know who "Capt. April" is and it's not even really established as canon.. but if it was I just want to know why he would be in the movie? What would he contribute to that?
It would be simply interesting to see him, even for a moment, as a Commodore, perhaps give the speech at the handing over ceremony to Kirk. Like when actors you never expect just pop up in 10 second cameos. Not something lame, but gives a presence.
According to the MEMORY ALPHA web site, the Enterprise was refit before Kirk took command. That would explain the construction-I hope. If this movie contradicts anything we already know, it will instantly lose all credibility with the fans. They better do their homework and do it right.
Nothing beats StarGate same concept but a gate and not in the future and it make sense of our lost history who built the pyramides, viking history and so on.
you guys cant get hung up on who they cast in what role. Cause even if they cloned the entire original cast with a shortened lifespan just to film this movie, someone would still bitch that their not the same. The only thing is Chekov didn't show up until season 2, so technically he shouldn't even be in this movie. Course thats something they forgot in Star Trek II when Khan tells Chekov he never forgets a face. Truth is, he never met him. watch Space Seed if you think I'm lyin
You are correct in the fact that Checkov wasn't in season 1 but that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't on the Enterprise during season 1 -- maybe he was promoted to bridge officer at the beginning of season 2? In the episode 'Space Seed' the action hardly stays with Khan ALL THE TIME -- he may well have met Chekov on the ship and had a conversation with him about his Russian heritage or something. Think about it and please consider alternatives next time before u decide to bad-mouth the trek.
"Truth is, he never met him. watch Space Seed if you think I'm lyin"
So the only things that happened were only what happened on screen? So in the time we didn't see them on screen, nothing happened to those characters? They just died for a week?
well yeah, wasn't that Gene Roddenberry's whole point? if it didn't happen on tv, it didnt happen canonically? Wasn't there mention in one of the episodes that Chekov was fresh, if not a couple of months from the Academy? I'm not bad mouthing Star Trek, i'm just saying I think someone made a continuity error. Thats all
I don't know (not that I recall at least which may not mean much) but Khan remember Chekov from an episode Chekov wasn't even part of. So I don't think it was truly established when he joined.
"i recently read that this movie was pushed back till may 2009 because of the writers strike is this true?"
Not really, but it was pushed back. Paramount did some reshuffling, several of the movies were pushed back due to the strike. Star Trek was pushed back to give them a second summer movie. They felt Star Trek was summer blockbuster material.
reimagined galactica is the only scifi series that has any balls. I hope they dont make XI "dark and gritty" like deep space 9. That pussy ass show sucked the chrome off the trailer.
Abrams better not make this some stupid gory and scary sci-fi movie. He's probably make the lighting on the ship dark and we're not going to see a damn thing! I don't know about you, but I don't like this guy, Karl Urban, playing McCoy. Or the guy playing Sulu. He dosen't look anything like George Takei. They only picked him because he's Asain, and they should have at least found someone who resembles Takei. All I know is this movie better be good. (Sorry, if I spelled anything wrong)

trekkiefan9 I guesss the 9 means your age huh? Or is that your IQ? Of course you idiot Trek was before Star Wars. But it seems that Trek is only following Star Wars. More prequel crap and more moron fans like you following it like sheepeople!
I didn't realize how pathetic the star trek fan base has fallen.

This whole movie sounds like a Star Wars wanna be. I can't believe Star Trek fans are this stupid to swallow this idea. It goes to show you have dumb Trek fans have become. I hope this movie bombs! Trek is just more and more backwards.

They just shoul've made a star trek film during the TNG Era or based it on Enterprise. Rather a retconn of TOS. I''m not even sure if I'll wahc this. And I'm a trekkie!!!!
"Deforest Kelly and Jimmy Dohan are going to rolling over in their grave. "
Considering James Doohan was cremated, and the rest of the cast have given their blessings and met up with their new counterparts, there isn't a problem okay?
I prefer the new'er star treks.. although the older ones where amazing too.
film-wise i think older star trek had the better story line. modern star trek has great series.
i'd prefer a DS9 film tbh... as ther neva has been one and... voyager can hardy get a film, everything ends wen they get bk through borg transwarp gate.
For me, Star Trek came to life with the next generation..with wonderful ship designs, new races, great characters and incredible stories... why go back to the beginning? ... I don't understand, but there has to be a reason why Enterprise was cancelled after 4 Seasons and TNG not... but that should not be my problem...
so it remains to hope that it will be star trek again, as we love it!..for the fans :-)
exactly ..they must be careful with all these different generations from classic to tng to ds9 to voyageur and then enterprise and all the movies in between completely rapes the entire storyline
The Original Series was great! The special effects don't mean anything. What do you mean it came to life with The Next Generation! (I'm not saying TNG sucks, I'm just saying that TOS was just as good and in my opinion better) Not trying to say this rudely though.
for me, nemesis can't compare to first contact at all. and from what i heard, enterprise is better in 3rd and 4th seasons but quite fail in first 2 seasons

Exploring this topic could've led to some really good stories similar to what BSG has done. Good thinking. BSG can get a little overboard with it sometimes. I think TREK would've worked if it added just a touch more of fighting and conquest instead of techno-babble inventions to save the day.
briantorpedo 3 years ago
I think DS9 covers that.. DS9 and BSG are almost parallel in their themes

The only thing that will ruin this movie for me is the lack of involvement of Shatner. I hope they bring a new show to TV I miss it.

Shatner is a fat pig who sucks at acting. TOS being good was a total fluke.

This movie is going to flop just like the rest of the Star Trek franchise.
brianmiami 3 years ago
Techno-babble is exactly what ruined the Star Trek franchise. Characters are lost against the warp drive/ray beam crappola. Just watch the new BSG and look how Star Trek seems unwatchable. Hopefully this movie will do something good for the franchise.
madmike81 3 years ago
It can get in the way, to true. As the fact that BSG needed Dale Dye to do a two week military course with the actors. It was there complete ineptitude and inability to even feign acting like military personal that blew the series for me. I just couldn't take any of them seriously after season one.
1126thmp 3 years ago
You lot are useless fags! This looks the don, its got that epic feel to it which is sorely needed. You all cry about trivial details saying how it will be ruined; built using welding, JJ etc blah blah blah! Why don't you just wait n see instead of having a period! Its about time someone made an ST film that looked this good!

It's not Star Trek without Shatner. You can't re-make Star Trek without the man who helped start it. At least an uncredited spot. But no.

If it's not star trek without shatner than why is TNG so goddamned good.

True, I should have given that thought. Wonder who will be Captain April? Now that would be cool to see.
1126thmp 3 years ago
I don't think Capt. April will be on it. Why would he?
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
He was the Captain during the Enterprises first 5 year voyage. Then Pike took over.
1126thmp 3 years ago
I know who "Capt. April" is and it's not even really established as canon.. but if it was I just want to know why he would be in the movie? What would he contribute to that?
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
It would be simply interesting to see him, even for a moment, as a Commodore, perhaps give the speech at the handing over ceremony to Kirk. Like when actors you never expect just pop up in 10 second cameos. Not something lame, but gives a presence.
1126thmp 3 years ago
Alls I want to know is why there showing it being built, when Kirk doesn't take command of Enterprise until its 20 years later?
1126thmp 3 years ago
"Alls I want to know is why there showing it being built, when Kirk doesn't take command of Enterprise until its 20 years later?"
That doesn't really matter. The movie is supposed to be a "metaphor" for "Under construction." So we see the Enterprise "Under Construction."
Plus, we do get to see Captain Pike in the movie, so we will likely see the Enterprise anyway before Kirk took over. It's a non-linear story.
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
According to the MEMORY ALPHA web site, the Enterprise was refit before Kirk took command. That would explain the construction-I hope. If this movie contradicts anything we already know, it will instantly lose all credibility with the fans. They better do their homework and do it right.

you guys cant get hung up on who they cast in what role.
KroniKKidZ28 3 years ago
You are correct in the fact that Checkov wasn't in season 1 but that doesn't necessarily mean he wasn't on the Enterprise during season 1 -- maybe he was promoted to bridge officer at the beginning of season 2? In the episode 'Space Seed' the action hardly stays with Khan ALL THE TIME -- he may well have met Chekov on the ship and had a conversation with him about his Russian heritage or something. Think about it and please consider alternatives next time before u decide to bad-mouth the trek.
samesque 3 years ago
"Truth is, he never met him. watch Space Seed if you think I'm lyin"
So the only things that happened were only what happened on screen? So in the time we didn't see them on screen, nothing happened to those characters? They just died for a week?
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
well yeah, wasn't that Gene Roddenberry's whole point? if it didn't happen on tv, it didnt happen canonically? Wasn't there mention in one of the episodes that Chekov was fresh, if not a couple of months from the Academy? I'm not bad mouthing Star Trek, i'm just saying I think someone made a continuity error. Thats all
KroniKKidZ28 3 years ago
"if not a couple of months from the Academy?"
I don't know (not that I recall at least which may not mean much) but Khan remember Chekov from an episode Chekov wasn't even part of. So I don't think it was truly established when he joined.

i recently read that this movie was pushed back till may 2009 because of the writers strike is this true?
spacexploder 3 years ago
"i recently read that this movie was pushed back till may 2009 because of the writers strike is this true?"
Not really, but it was pushed back. Paramount did some reshuffling, several of the movies were pushed back due to the strike. Star Trek was pushed back to give them a second summer movie. They felt Star Trek was summer blockbuster material.
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
yeah well in that case they were stupid cause it may have had a shot in december but in the summer it will get killed by the competition
spacexploder 3 years ago
"but in the summer it will get killed by the competition"
That's showing a lot of confidence. Why can't it be the other way around?
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
reimagined galactica is the only scifi series that has any balls. I hope they dont make XI "dark and gritty" like deep space 9. That pussy ass show sucked the chrome off the trailer.
BuzzyFredrick 3 years ago

They just shoul've made a star trek film during the TNG Era or based it on Enterprise. Rather a retconn of TOS. I''m not even sure if I'll wahc this. And I'm a trekkie!!!!

"They just shoul've made a star trek film during the TNG Era or based it on Enterprise. "
Right, so that way the movie franchise can continue to bomb?? Just go watch it, there's nothing wrong with this that anyway can see. Don't worry.
thealphacenturi 3 years ago 3
This trek is gonna suck. Deforest Kelly and Jimmy Dohan are going to rolling over in their grave. SHatner is not even in it, what the hell?!?!?!?
Just let the franchise die peacefully. Give it that much respect

Yep. They should leave it alone already.

"Deforest Kelly and Jimmy Dohan are going to rolling over in their grave. "
Considering James Doohan was cremated, and the rest of the cast have given their blessings and met up with their new counterparts, there isn't a problem okay?
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
I prefer the new'er star treks.. although the older ones where amazing too.
film-wise i think older star trek had the better story line. modern star trek has great series.
i'd prefer a DS9 film tbh... as ther neva has been one and... voyager can hardy get a film, everything ends wen they get bk through borg transwarp gate.
Capzlockmaniac 3 years ago
Oh no... why again the past?
For me, Star Trek came to life with the next generation..with wonderful ship designs, new races, great characters and incredible stories... why go back to the beginning? ... I don't understand, but there has to be a reason why Enterprise was cancelled after 4 Seasons and TNG not... but that should not be my problem...
so it remains to hope that it will be star trek again, as we love it!..for the fans :-)
NathMedi 3 years ago
"... why go back to the beginning? "
It was the story the J.J. and Co. wanted to tell.
"don't understand, but there has to be a reason why Enterprise was cancelled"
Because Star Trek and UPN had lost momentum? Voyager was lucky it wasn't cancelled.
thealphacenturi 3 years ago
exactly ..they must be careful with all these different generations from classic to tng to ds9 to voyageur and then enterprise and all the movies in between completely rapes the entire storyline
testesterone 3 years ago 2
The Original Series was great! The special effects don't mean anything. What do you mean it came to life with The Next Generation! (I'm not saying TNG sucks, I'm just saying that TOS was just as good and in my opinion better) Not trying to say this rudely though.
