Luckily tinted glasses were HUGE in the '70s. This was actually the start of Dawson's ego getting inflated and the backstage bickering with Howard Felsher was beginning to spill over on to the show itself.

It doesn't have to have a midway, although many do. A county fair is an agricultural/commercial exhibition put on by a single designated organization within a county, and once a year. Strictly speaking, it doesn't have to have a midway either -- although many do.

Yes, apparently he had some problem with his eyes and he needed the sunglasses because the lights were bothering him. On one show, both families entered wearing sunglasses, and Richard wasn't amused. Unfortunately this was also around the time Richard's ego was at its peak.

I remember reading actor Willie Aames' account of how, during his EIE years, he got made fun of by one of his teachers for wearing sunglasses to class. The teacher was rude, b/c he didn't understand how being under the lights for all those shows/cameras can affect your eyesight, so the sunglasses really are necessary--just ask Bono! Maybe producer Howard and Dawson were having a battle of ego's and Howard was getting in a cheap-shot at Dawson with the sunglasses thing like that teacher did.

Yeah, he had scratched his cornia from what I recall. But to your point, this was right before he left MG and his ego was at the beginning of it's worst stage ('78-82). It's sad because, I love Richard Dawson, but he had an ego problem. I say he got a little better when Cathy Hugart Dawson became the producer in 1982. Obviously it took the show's cancelling in '85 and his being blacklisted shortly thereafter for his ego to deflate. By 1994 he was pretty humbled and easy going.
