  • really fond memory of this cartoon, some of the episodes were quite dqrk for kids though. Girlfriend told me it was big in france too (she's french).

  • Wiped from my memory .... father, father, you are alive my son!

  • Used to watch this after school on childrens bbc, back in the day when there were only 4 channels. This was followed by newsround and then blue peter. great times.

  • this is pretty insane

  • Sounds like the exact same people, but it beats the crap out of Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.

  • na co ja pacze

  • UlyssEEeeEEeeEEss... nooneelsecandothethingsyoudoooooooo

  • Soaring through the galaxies :D

  • dude i watch Ulysses 31 in 1984 i new york on the early cable channel at 3pm on mondays and Saturdays at 5am yes 5am because the old channel back then didn't japanese shows unless it was really early love the old shows better then these new stuff any day

  • Cool. :)

  • I remember I watched this every day at 5pm which is the only time I could read from a clock.

I am so proud that this cartoon was made by a company from my home town, Dalian and a usa company. Wow I think it is even better than some cartoons nowadays.

  • I never saw this but it looks amazing! It'd be completely wasted on kids today, though...

  • I saw the entire series last year on Veoh, and I have to say, this is the most awesome series I've ever seen.

This is probably one of the few cartoons at the time to actually have an ending. :D

  • That's a classic theme tune

  • Ulysses...the only man who can breath in space while weilding a sword....he's so badass

  • This was a massive co production from 4 different countries.

France "French" Japan "Japanese" Belgium "Dutch and German, only German exists on YouTube so probably German for this one." U.S.A. "American English"

  • @wrestletube1 There is also a Chinese version called "大草原上的小老鼠"

  • Space Jesus!

  • MORTALS!

  • This was just SO CLASSIC!! Loved it!!

  • 36 people must of become as life less as stone !!!

  • Mortals, you defy the Gods?

  • @RareBillyIdolSongs "I sentence you to travel among unknown stars!"

  • Greek Mythology in SPACE!?!? XD

  • This was deep. Too deep for the kids made dumb by spongeBob

  • @firearmsron amen!!

  • 36 ppl bodies were lifeless as stone!

  • Oh my god I'm 12. How does this happen?

  • Daft Punk Blatantly got inspired by this

  • this cartoon did not pull its punches, It has some real heart wrenching moments, as a kid I was pretty saddened at some of the deaths and the fates befallen some characters,

Damn this cartoon had some freakin balls!

  • @alexbaxthedarkside That was before children were put in this bubble. ADHD, depression, allergies? Sit still, shut the fuck up, playing in the dirt builds an immune system and it's perfectly normal to feel sadness.

Sometimes I think modern parents don't want their kids to ever grow out of their diapers.

  • "IT IS THE 31st CENTURY, ULYSSES KILLED (Not Defeated Mind, KILLED!!) THE GIANT CYCLOPS WHEN HE RESCUED THE CHILDREN AND HIS SON TELEMACUS.

BUT THE ANCIENT GODS OF OLYMPUS ARE ANGRY AND THREATEN A TERRIBLE REVENGE"

    MORTALS!! YOU DEFY THE GOOOOOODDDDSSS???!!!

I SENTENCE YOU TO TRAVEL AMONG UNKNOWN STARS< UNTIL YOU FIND THE KINGDOM OF HADES< YOUR BODIES SHALL REMAIN AS LIFELESS....AS STONE!!"

Fuck me if that does not set the stakes High I don't know what does, COOLEST OPENING LINES to this toon

  • @alexbaxthedarkside No... NO CARTOON today would have the balls! In the year 2011----they could NEVER get away with such action. Check out Centurions... a cartoon about three heros who beam all over the world, and bond with WEAPONS packs...in sea, land, and air. I always loved Mysterious Cities of Gold and Spartakus. In the clima of MCOG you see high priest STABBED to death...and DYING...and he holds on for life, but ..well you have to watch to find out.

  • Looks like it could be clips from Interstela 5555. Good memories!

  • gotta love the use of the talk box in the theme tune!!!

  • this is my theme song! ^.^

my name is ulises though :p

  • IT IS THE 31ST CENTURY!!

    EPIC!!!!!

  • 'ulysses, the way back to earth has been wiped from my memory' that bit still sends a shiver down my spine!

  • they should make a live action film of this

  • omg i havent seen this in yearsssssss

  • Drink every time they say 'Ulysses'...

  • Great animation, thought provoking stories, a catchy ass theme tune... my childhood made even more enjoyable!!! Love the boxset! :D

  • loved this as a kid my little sister thought her name was nono till she was 7!

  • Every time I watch this I get the image of Phillip Schofield singing this!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my good grief!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Easy one of the best cartoons, abit of sci-fi added with some mythology and a cracking theme tune...even the stories where great.

If there was ever a cartoon that could do a decent cross over to a live film this is it!!

  • How Hollywood has avoided a big remake (than the Gods of Olympus they haven't) with real actors begs belief

    BEST THEME TUNE EVER!

  • Fark me...the memories!!

  • Comment removed

  • Best theme song! You can dance to this one!

  • I see to recall that this was one of Channel 4's earliest acquisitions for kids viewing. Or did the Beeb air it beforehand?

  • @alcockell nearly sure it was on bbc 1 first.

  • i remember watching this when i was very young and loving the adventure, starting with the kick ass theme tune

  • This was fuckin awesome when i was a kid....couldnt wait to get home from school to watch it. The tune is superb.

  • The year is 1995.

    I'm 7 years old.

    It's 7 O'Clock in the morning.

My brother and I have just come downstairs before our parents wake up.

We each get a bowl of cereal, sit in front of the TV and turn it on.

30 minutes of Ulysses 31 followed by 30 minutes of Heathcliff the Cat.

    Good times.

  • @TheJboy88 Snap !!!!! :D I miss those mornings :(

  • @TheJboy88 ? this cartoon was on tv in 1983 not 1995 lol

  • @Khaos969 I know. But back then most of the show I watched were repeats from earlier years.

In fact now that I think about it, almost all the stuff I watched at that time was from the 80's or 70's.

  • @Khaos969 They repeated it on C4 in 95 or thereabouts.

  • @TheJboy88 amen bro!

  • @TheJboy88

hmmm... are you from poland maybe? :D

  • @TheJboy88 good times indeed! *sob*

  • @TheJboy88 Same story here, except for me, it was 1993 and I was 11.

    You rock, sir.^_^

  • @TheJboy88 i have hunted long and hard for this my friends thought a was crazy a could not remember what it was called and now i have found you OH YASSSSSSSSSSSSS can you buy this on DVD sheer class

  • @TheJboy88 I remember doing the exact same thing! I was 11 in 95. Those were the days.

  • @TheJboy88 We are not related but after that comment I consider you my Brother

  • @TheJboy88 awww man obscure...i didnt even know the difference..i thought this was the bomb!!!! i love all the 80s cartoon themes to this day!!! galaxy rangers at the top of the list.

  • Es Vargaaas!!

  • Memories!

This cartoon was way too advanced for the kids who watched it.

But I fuckin' loved it lol.

  • @JOCKEYSI3OLLIX Not at all - what made it (and others from the same team like the Mysterious Cities Of Gold) so special was that it did not talk down to the kids watching it - it didn't patronise them and had enough excitement in general for those who were too young to follow the details of the plot completely. :)

  • You know it's time to kill yourself when the mere sound of the theme tunes of the cartoons of your youth reminds you how hard you wasted your life. Goodbye

  • @goatshredder Lol, why be so negative? Anyway Goodbye.

  • This needs to be made into a film now!!!!!

  • What is the significance of the number 31?

  • @robgambler1 It means that Ulysses is now living in the 31st century. There is no significance to the number 31.

  • Uly-SSYE-SSYE-SEEEEESS!!

  • god i forgot about this use to watch it when i was a little kid feel old now /cry

  • A superhero with a beard? You don't see that anymore!

  • Spongebob is very adult in parts. Don't diss it in favour of this. As a child of the 80s, I actually read the Odyssey in Latin, like a lot of children in the previous generation, so park the "it's uniformly so much better nowadays" attitude. Different generations have different cultural experiences, but they all speak towards the same issues of morality, identity and inspiration.

96 people gave the above comment a thumbs up before pulling their heads out of their Regan/Thatcher raised asses.

  • @NSGrendel you are right, but i would rather have thatcher than any labour leader, they have destroyed this once great country

  • @NSGrendel Spongebob might have adult humour but it's still immature as sin.

  • Actually the gods were wrong - nono killed the cyclops! So unfair.

  • wow i remember this was awesome

  • we all love the think about the past when were growing up bk in the 70s 80s its makes us all smile when we go back in the past reminising keeps us all sane peace everyone

  • we always talk about the good ole days at work all the cartoons and programs like rentaghost, kickstart, terrahawks ect.

  • Amazing

  • wiping away a tear right now!

  • Omg i used to luv this cartoon afta school.fuckin nostalgia trip or wot

  • I remember this mierda back in the day haha i always thought it was like a christian tv shiw due to his magnificent resemblence to jesus christ

  • i used to watch this after school

  • I always thaught the crew were just asleep all i can remember is them floating in mid air

  • I remember watching that on VHS when I was younger, as I recall it was pretty frightening and full of suspense.

  • @doug2930 exactly that :)

  • je préfère quand meme la version française

  • it high time this awsome series was brought to life as a series of movies, well the Stars Wars & Harry Potter sagas are now complete what does anyone else think? no rude reply ok

  • @gallafey It would be pointless. This show is perfect as it is. Any copy of it will fail. The design of the characters and ships cant be bettered and the music would have to be kept very similar. The show is too dark for kids these days anyway. A man and his son taking on evil gods would not be made now.

  • @gallafey I would not want an animated HP series. Never was my cup of tea.

  • 35 people got turned to stone.

  • @SuperBIGTEL Did they really get turned, to stone how sad.

  • @rojblake82 yeah, real life, they got lost down the blue box, they did not realize they needed a red key.

    It happens :)

  • @SuperBIGTEL Perhaps truning people to stone is not such a bad idea it would get rid of huge chunks of people and reduce the problem of the terrible population taht would be great turned into stone.

  • funny really i never liked this show but when i comper

it to stuff on now a day it's actully good

  • Load of old tosh

  • @rojblake82

    Time for tubby bye-bye, Bitch!

  • @shteak Peace man.

  • Funny Shiz!!!! Hahahahahaha 0:43 My Theme Song Starts!!!

  • Funny Shiz!!!! Hahahahahaha :43 My Theme Song Starts!!!

  • This is guff and it was embarrassing, to listen to and to watch.

  • tune

  • I would love a top dj like dj yoda or mr scruff ( any other ideas? ) to do a mix with breaks and beats with top 80s kid theme tunes all mixed together. It would be so good. Of course Ulysses 31 would be in there because its has one of the best theme tunes.

  • @loohole81 check out Akira Kiteshi - Ulysses, doesnt really have the big theme tune to it, but still pretty cool.

  • Dark?...hell yeah,... even the guy talking on the intro used to give me chills when I used to watch this after school '...your bodies will remain as Lifeless as stone!'...Sherka's voice was very cleverly 'lifeless' without being theatrically robotic...

  • this guy had balls,he messed with the gods and got away with it

  • ITS IN ENGLISH! Wow, where I grew up it only came on the french station, along with the french version of Captain Harlock; "Albator" .

  • This was the first anime I ever watched as a kid.

It's just as good as I remember it.

Younger generations don't know what they missed.

They think Zack and Cody are good? Think again.

    THIS is real children's entertainment.

  • when i first saw this show on tv I always changed channel because I didnt like it at first glance, but....how wrong i was.

  • Magic happens when the French and Japanese work together.

  • i used to fancy ulysses. god i was one weird child

  • how can you not like this? awesome memories

  • Load of old crap and boring, I bloody hated this cartoon in billions of ways.

  • 0:35 "the way back to earth has been wiped from my memory"

looks like someones got a trojan virus! hahaha!

  • @xxxKINGFROGxxx

Everyone is saying how things used to be better in the old days. Ironically, very few of these people were smart enough to click "Like" on this.

  • Love this series so much, i agroo about the annoying robot Nono, but i found the flying robot from Star Fleet to me exceedingly annoying... as Jar Jar :)... <3 the 80's cartoons. they bring back so many childhood memories :)

  • He looks like Space Jesus.

  • @jeenormus

NO WAY!! They would destroy it.... you name me one thing that has come out of Shoddywood that has been great when they have tried resurrect something from the past.

This should be left alone and remembered as one of the greatest children's animation of all time. It was dark, it was sinister and had some truly great stories.

  • @TheMidoriGiant I think in the hands of the right director, its a possibility.

  • they should fxxxx with this by making it into a movie thumbs up who agrees ?

  • What a load of old tosh this show was, it was alos embarrssing to watch and the theme tune was torturous to listen to.

  • @rojblake82 orly? And pray tell, what cartoons did you like when you were a kid?

  • @rojblake82 What cartoons were better then in the 1980s then in your brilliant opinion? What cartoons took ancient Greek myth and turned it into something intelligent, mature and dark like this toon? Oh fuck off moron.

  • I'm a child of the 80's too please respond!

  • @ShahMashya I am a child of the 80's too.

  • @Sweetmervs Those were the times of great cartoons, tv-series and music. Even without cellphones and computers as today the life were better back then.

  • cheers! *clink*

  • Seriously this inspired me to get into astral projection!!!

Cartoons were only going to take me so far LOL

  • I think this is like ELO did the theme song to this.

  • cheers

  • @mildredsmittens that one scared the crap out of me! Was it Sisyphus, or something like that? So bleak!

  • @mildredsmittens thats one episode ill never forget, and even at the end of the cartoon the gods still made him do it for eternity..so it wasnt even a happy ending left u feeling abit disturbed lol

  • Why were the cartoons of the 80's so mature and dark, cartoons like this I think are good for the development of a young kids mind, so much more thought is put into the storylines and morals and lessons are taught, nowadays its spongebob which requires ZERO intelligence to understand, if you are a child of the 80s you are the last generation that will ever get to see these masterpiece cartoons that shaped our youth.. so cheers to all u chrildren of the 80s I salute you *raises glass* :)

  • @Khaos969 well said buddy !!

  • @Khaos969 To be fair, Spongebob is slapstick humour while Ulysses is sci fi action adventure.

Though I know what you mean, a lot of cartoons of the 80s and early 90s had some really well created settings, and great art for show them off. Though there are some good modern ones like Wolverine and the X-Men that have that dark setting entact.

  • @Khaos969 as a proud child of the 80's i thank you!

    *raises glass back*

  • @Khaos969 *Raises my own glass in return.*

  • @Khaos969 I don't think a great deal of thought went into ripping off Greek myths, but it was a great show and you didn't even realise you were learning to be moral along the way!

  • @Khaos969 agreed... born in 1977. so i got to watch them all

  • @Khaos969 I know exactly what you mean. They are artistic masterpieces that we as children loved. And the best theme tunes ever. The best kids have nowadays is Horrid Henry and Harry potter pish. Theres no comparison. Download The Mysterious Cities Of Gold and He Man and brainwash your children by making them watch them. Thats the only way.

  • @anonbeliever1 agreed. :)

  • @Khaos969 Unless you buy them for your kids on DVD. I'm getting my kids on the 80'd cartoons rather then watching the modern 1's where possible

  • @Khaos969 ..that's the whole point, to dumb down the children of today.

  • @Khaos969 sorry to dig up an old comment, but I couldn't disagree more. Yes, this children's cartoon was genius, but if you compare it to Spongebob, you aren't comparing like with like. This has much more in common with the numerous Japanese anime cartoons that have been popular since this time and are still popular and still being made today. Studio Ghibli are still producing children's entertainment with this level of maturity & sophistication.

  • @Khaos969 That's very good points you make. It's a good job we can get these cartoons on DVD to show our kids! :D

  • @Alan7997 Some people need turning into stone to help, reduce the nimber of people in this world that would help in billions of ways.

  • @Khaos969 Well i have been born in 87" still when i was like... hmmm 7 years old i remeber this cartoon. It was a small cartoon show tv block, they played this and Lucky Luke every monday and friday at 10AM.

And i totally agree, we had best cartoons in our childhoods, ones that will never be remade sadly.

  • @Zekzt

you mean we hope are never remade because they would most likey fuck them up

there is aways a smalls charce they wont

    but they most likey will

  • @Khaos969 Even the later on "action" cartoons, like Biker Mice From Mars had some nice humor and story line, nowdays cartoons are totally brainwashed, without any remarkable and memorable characters and stories.

  • @Khaos969 So true, and so sad. The children nowadays are missing out.

  • @Khaos969 Hear, hear. When I was young they aired Japanese anime for kids, and they were, to put it mildly, violent. Kids aren't as fragile as some people would like us to believe.

  • @Khaos969 Amen Brother!

  • @Khaos969 Last Airbender, Thundercats (new), Generator Rex, Samurai Jack, Clone Wars (animated), Young Justice, Avengers: World's Mightiest Heroes...

To name but a few and if anything, stuff like The Last Airbender really puts 80s cartoons to shame in terms of characters, plot, story arcs and such. While there is a lot to be said for the nostalgia value of these shows, a good number of them have not aged well.

  • @ProphetTenebrae your comparing shows that can be found easily and in 1600x1080 with shows like this are only found in 640x360 at best and full of pixels and with grey colors, you are dumb. Look at the HD openings of remastered shows of the 90's that are on youtube like "Hulk HD opening" you will see that the quality of this shows when remastered have nothing to envy to news except the most new ones like the thunderscats etc but because those use a lot of computer effects.

  • @Khaos969 To be fair, for every show like this there were a million Snorks and Foofurs. Kids today have shows like Avatar. Even Ben 10 is more mature than most of the shows from the 80s.

Incidentally, I never saw this one. It must not have aired in my area. I'm pretty pissed because it looks good.

  • @Khaos969 well put

  • @Khaos969 well put

  • @Khaos969 Totally agree

  • A Deep Space Bee Gee

  • Damn, wish i could grow a beard that epic.

  • Ulysses is what made me interested in mythology in the first place. Though I still havent been able to find the Odyssey book in stores around here ¬¬;....

  • Hey hollywood a lot of nostalgia here how about a film? Come on if you can make boring crap like avatar why not. viggo Morttenson for ulysses!

  • @1simo93521 Now that I would actually bother to go and see :)

  • Ulysses looks a bit like Cat Stevens...
