  • DUDE YOU HELP ME SO MUCH HELL YEAHHH!!!

  • Thanks :)))

  • i fully understand now as to elastic audio works. i mess around with it all the time on my friend's laptop. but i am utterly helpless on where exactly i have to go to download the plugin for elastic audio onto my computer. help, anyone?

  • Thanks Jeff

  • that part was played really tight ... ha

  • this tutorial just saved me a whole lot of time and headache.

I can't believe what i just did with 2 acoustic guitar tracks.

I wasn't happy with the tempo fluctuation of a song in which the guitars were recorded very nicely to.

So I recreated a tempo map with the conductor tool and the tempo change feature... in which case the guitars were completely off tempo.

I quantized to 8th notes with elastic audio on polyphonic and made 2 minor corrections on transients. Results were amazing.

  • what 6 idiots gave this a thumbs down?

  • Ladies and gents watch this guy>>>>He knows his stuff!!

  • Thank youuuuuuuuuuuu

  • awesome tutorial thank you

  • I have 7.3 LE with Beat Detective. Does it work the same as Elastic?I want to fit songs recorded without a grid onto the grid to lock time and use MIDI

  • that is the coolest song i've ever heard

  • i love ProTools

  • Tutorial is great and the tutorial demonstrator's name is awesome.

  • sonar 8 producer better!!!

  • Very very very precise tutorial. I like....Thanks

  • Excellent video, thank you.

  • this one here was very interesting i like the features of pro tools nice

  • lmfao, brings back bad memories....

  • I need to define how to use music. Its not easy with all that f** hardware software ish.

  • look kids...you don't need to learn how to play bass guitar, you can just use elastic audio, it's like autotune for your fingers!!!

    Thanks,

    Pete Wentz xxxx

  • @UberTroll13 BAAHJAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!

  • @UberTroll13 Agreed. but, I often am forced to record un talented artists..and I'm not going to deny recording them cause they aren't good. So E/A is a must. Also, for drums, if there are just one or two measures, I'd rather just fix a few beats then do it all over again. But, to the degree shown in this video, I would just re-track

  • @UberTroll13 this feature is not just to fix noobs who can't play.

I just worked magic with this tip by changing the complete tempo structure of a song and quantizing the guitars back to the new tempo map.

The original guitars i played were near perfect, but I wasn't happy with the original tempo map that they were played to. This feature is incredible even if you are a professional player.

  • I change the tempo 20 bpm and can hear artifacts. Help

  • @zorbazoo why would want something at 20 bpm?

  • tripiness factor...doing things your not supposed to do...for those times when i take valium and opiates

  • @zorbzoo hm... well i don't know what tempo you're starting at before stretching to 20bpm, but you're probably not going to find a time expansion algorithm in the entire world that doesn't leave you with artifacts with a stretch that big

  • @zorbazoo Hahahahaha this made my day

  • Can you use elastic audio to fix temp if you did not record to a click track?

  • try with beat detective first....good luck

  • record unless you are in a studio that has preserved or fixed one of those decks or machines. So basically the method for recording today is digital although a lot of artist use effects that make is sound digital you do not have to and all of those effects were alive back then just in machines an used more suddel. The program doesn't determine the music you make and if those guys were to cut a record today you would probably love it and it would undoubtable be cut using pro tools.

  • by the way the people you named that you said didnt play with a click, they did, the still tapped it out with there feet, the drummer counted it off, usually those type of studios had plenty of hand held metronomes and they played on analogue real to real machines which are not made anymore, although the warmth is better than digitial pro tools is the warmest recording and only recoding program or method we have today. So you are sayin every artist is lifeless now, there is no other option to

  • I record in a professional Kansas City studio with an Analog (Studer) reel - to reel, and still can find need to use pro-tools and many of it's plug-ins.

  • oh ya me to! i reviewed my past comment a little and im not sure if you were saying hey me to or im one of the people that know a lot about recording use those things and still use the plug ins. but either way i was trying to say ya using pro tools and the plug ins are awesome. i record into pro tools all the time. where do you record in kansas, i only know like 2 of the huge studios out there and havent been to either just some artist i listen to use them so iv looked at there sites n stuff

  • blah blah default pro tools haters comment

  • This seems sort of like Flex Time in Logic Pro.

  • Except flex time was introduced two years later.

  • And Digital performer had it before that.

I can hear artifacts though when I use these types of tools... Just do another take or quit playing music if you don't have the skills or talent to play in meter. It would really suck to go hear that band live with the guitarist out that bad... anyone rehearse things any more?

  • yup, if you're that bad a guitarist that you get takes sounding like that, give up and go back to flipping burgers

  • Thanks. Dig it.

  • Thanks for the great tutorial! Favourited!

  • this is another step for lifeless

    music...

like we need more of it.

the doors, iron maiden, black sabath, beatles, led zeppelin and many more didn't play with click at all...

  • if you want living music go see a live show... but if you want your great songs to become a great record on a budget and a deadline... use elastic audio. and auto tune. save the headache, the time, and the money.

  • I find it really funny that you consider music lifeless if it was recorded with a click...

#1. A click is just a guide. You can still play behind the beat or ahead of it. It doesn't have to be unison with it.

#2. How easy is it to say that those bands back then didn't use all the technology we have today when the technology didn't even exist at that time! I'm sure if it did they'd make use of it like artists now.

#3. Robert Plant used autotune on his solo album.

  • yeah, just think. They might have sounded good if they had,

  • this works great for remixing too...and also recording DJ sets....you can make the transitions PERFECT

  • ProTools8.... "that really sucked guys, come on in....."

or ProTools8.... "you can polish a turd"

    elastic audio... what next?

  • Great Lesson.

    Thanks

  • this is soo gonna help me for my exam 2morrow, thanx alot

  • pretty cool!

  • Great video. How did you do a screen cast with pro tools? For some reason the audio for pro tools is not being recorded with the applications that I have used.

  • petorkay blink planko nut. Chak wallagak varmfarm media chunko. Blah blah blah blah

  • I can understand the value of elastic time if the musicians aren't present. This is a valuable tool. But if a guitarists time is bad, or a vocalist constantly needs pitch correction, what is that band going to sound like "live"? Pro Tools can be a great tool for very talented people. It is an equally effective turd polisher.

  • even your favorite band uses these " so- called machines"! even the best singers use this for touch ups, your wrong if you think that anyone goes in the studio and records straight through with no effects whatsoever, if someone can't sing at all and they need pitch correction or anything like that, it shows in the recordings, though some artists do that on purpose cuz they like the robotic effect, but if they sound real after touch ups then they can usually sing

  • Here's an idea, why not pick up a frikin guitar and lay down another take instead of dickin around with a mouse. Call me old school, but that's what musicians do. In the time it takes to do what is described here, a better song could have been written.

  • Comment removed

  • It is obvious that you can redo the guitar track. However, what Pro Tools has in mind is the engineer or musician who has the track delivered to them in this state. Why must we criticize what we don't understand? As an engineer, this saves a lot of time and gives you tempo control over audio, which in previous times, as you know because you are old school, had to be deleted and trashed. And, what if the guitar player just can't get it to the tempo? This way we get to keep him and not cut him.

  • these tweeze-skippys don't get it

  • While you make a fair point about re-takes, in the real world, miastakes can occur even from otherwise good musicians, with small mistakes hiding amongst an otherwise good take, especially when studio time is at a premium. Knowing how to utilise elastic audio etc to correct these is therfor essential.

You can still be old skool and be digital at the same time, its about striking the correct balance.

  • Hah - I know that pro tools sounds a little better is a lot more powerful than Ableton (in theory) -

But Ableton has been able to do this for like 5 years!

Yeah - but I'm not hating, I'm just pointing it out.

  • i just started using pro tools (for windows looks so ugly lol..)...im so confused...i made a recording of my vocals..but whenever i try to highlight my vocals it highlights everything the vocals and the beat in the separate track....makes me just want to go back to my mixcraft lol...great video btw 5star

  • hey it might be because your edit group option was selected as "all group", if you go a head and unhighlight it it should be fine.

it's on the buttom left corner

  • You are the man Jeff!

Us poor folk appreciate the help!

  • Hey jeff, i wanted to ask if there is a way to change the guitars i recorded at a half step dow..to a full step down using elastic audio or pitch shift. i now see that i recorde a bit out of my range...thanks

  • If you have Pro Tools 8, there is a new feature called Elastic Pitch, It's basically the same thing except for pitch.

Or, in any version of PT just go to the AudioSuite menu and choose Pitch Shift...

  • Awsome video!

  • thanks a lot dude!!!!! this is waaaaayyyy more simple and easy to follow than the videos on digidesign's website.

  • Hey Jeff! This is Joel Miller From Your Machine...Nic RODRIGUEZ buddy....

I found this fid and sent it to nic ..he told me he loved it and that it was you! How cool is that..anyways i had a ? . do you applie this technic for a drum track that is all on one mix ? i recorded with a v-drum set and need to pull some parts into time... thanks Jeff..You rock!!

  • Hi Big Voice Guy!

Glad that helped. Yes, I would use the same technique for fixing drums. You might have to do a couple of things differently: put the track in "ticks" mode, and then turn on the Elastic "Rhythmic" plugin. Then quantize with a value of 0% strength. This will create warp markers but not quantize the track. Then move the warp markers where needed to fix the timings you need to fix. Hope that helps...

  • cOOL! Thanks for the fast reply! So i need to pull the drums into time manually and not quauntize?

  • You can quantize if you want to! But if you only want to move a few beats around manually and leave the rest alone then set the quantize percentage to 0 or 1%.

  • Crap...where is my "analysis" mode? I've got PT 7.4, but I don't see my "analysis" mode...has anyone else had that problem?

  • Wait...nevermind...if it was a snake, it would've bit me, lol - thanks guy, for this great toot.

  • cool!

  • Thank you! Great tutorial!

  • Does both elastic time and elastic pitch come with PT 8, or is elastic time separate

  • Both come with it. Elastic time is a lot more useful IMO.

  • great

  • Awesome video thanks

  • Just bought PT7.4 for Elastic Audio and the free PT8 upgrade. Thanks a ton for this helpful video!!

  • Hi,

I am working in films and sometime need to replace a dialog that has been recorded on set with another one that has been recorded in the studio ( they are saying the same thing just the one on set might have some noise or the delivery is not great) so there will be some slight variation in the timing. Will Elastic Audio be a good instrument to replace the dialogs?

  • Yes, you could manually move analysis markers to align the dialog. However, there is a plugin called Vocalign that does it automatically, and does an AMAZING job. CHeck it out!

  • My Elastic Audio botton doesn't open. Why is that? Help me pls. - I have ProTools LE 7.4.2, iMac (Leopard)

  • I don't have PT in front of me right now, but perhaps your track isn't set to "Ticks"?

  • First thing to do is to try rebooting your computer. if that does not work you may have to reinstall Pro Tools.

  • Cheers man. Very helpful tutorial.

  • So can you use this same tutorial if you have accappella vocals and you want to add a new instrumental under the vocals to create a remix?

  • or... the guitarist should practice a bit more and pay his dues before coming to the recording session.

  • Yeah, he should have played it perfectly because that would make for a more interesting tutorial on how the feature works . . . .

  • hahaha

  • @HowAudioTV Ha! Touche

  • @HowAudioTV HA! perfect response. Kudos :) - MOWO!

  • @HowAudioTV L...O...L

  • @HowAudioTV this feature is not just to fix noobs who can't play.

I just worked magic with this tip by changing the complete tempo structure of a song and quantizing the guitars back to the new tempo map.

The original guitars i played were near perfect, but I wasn't happy with the original tempo map that they were played to. This feature is incredible even if you are a professional player.

  • @remoman he obviously played it out of beat to show how to fix it.

  • best tutorial!

  • well done

  • i never get clear transients like this when i record...is there a trick to getting better transients? or does it just basically have to do with the guitar tone?

  • if you are recording heavily distorted guitars also record a dry DI from the guitar at the same time. This way you will be able to see all the transients and you can group the DI and the distorted track and use the DI track as an edit guide for the ditsto track.

  • I had the same problem. That's a good idea.

  • Interesing idea, never thought of that approach

  • gr8 tutorial!

  • thanks so much for this tutorial! Helped me a lot!

  • I allready like the elastic plugin, but I am finding it VERY difficult working with a snaredrum with blastbeats around 200 bpm :-/ - Do you have any suggestions or better programs/plugins??

  • i've been having some troubles with elastic time. when i do edits like that one in the video, there are some odd, shit sounding frequency addet somewhere between 100 and 500 herz... some kind of modulation and flanging. sounds shitty :( anyone else recognized that?

  • Elastic audio introduces noise when it is streched. Depending on the algorythm you can attenuate the amount of noise, a bit like using a gate.

  • I didn't use any tricks to make the video... what you hear is the Monophonic algorithm with no adjustments. But I did try all of the algorithms and that one sounded best. On something like piano it's much tougher to get transparent time stretching. You really need to adjust the Elastic Plug-in's parameters to make a piano sound good.

  • Try the Rhythmic algorithm with the decay time set at 9 o'clock or so... you're going to need to set the decay just right, so that the previous snare's time stretching doesn't affect the next one. Also, try different settings and/or algorithms on each track. I prefer Polyphonic or Xform on overheads, for example. Also try deleting any excess warp markers as they can cause trouble.

  • Elastic Audio is simply unbelievable. This tutorial was RIGHT on the money Jeff! Many MANY of us appreciate the time and dedication that you've spent... thanx man.

Now only if LE users could get some MUCH needed Automatic Delay Compensation... 7.5??? Please please please Digi!

    Thanx again Jeff... I'm subscribed.

  • Thanks a lot man , this tutorial hook me up to fix some Vocal out of tempo !! ..

  • Extremely helpful- I've been using Pro Tools for some time and this saved me a hell of a lot of headache....Thanks

  • So its basically a souped up beat detective...

  • Man that was GREAT!

Your tone and ease of demo made

me glad I have the pro tool 7.4 and it was worth the upgrade!

    You The Master

  • i just got pro tools m box 2 and i dont see that on mine how do i get that elastic audio on mine

  • You need Pro Tools version 7.4 to get elastic audio like in this video.

  • Jeff,

thanks so much. that's really helpful. It always amazes me that so many of the protools plugins "kinda" work. There was absolutely no reason for the transient to be missed. Why? It's so agravating. If there's just one like in this example, it's not bad, but if there's lots, it can drive you crazy. I always wait until the second version of these things to come out. Close but not quite.

Do you do any of the McDsp plugs. I really like them.

    peace,

    Rob Barrett

  • Rob, Actually Elastic Audio really does work 99% of the time. I had to work hard to make a guitar part bad enough to fool it... I thought it was important to show how to fix a missed transient even though it rarely happens. Version 1 is safe in this case!

McDsp rocks... Filterbank is my fav.

  • Too bad we're not back in the Old Days, but we're not. Guitars are machines too. This is a very useful, lucid demo. The Pro Tools Help guide only makes sense when you already know what to do, not when you're struggling to learn.

  • in the early days of recording, you would just find a guitar player who COULD PLAY.

in the old days guitar players had to know how to play.

in the old days entires songs were made with one take...

Hence musicians were better than today.

from someone whom missed Real MUSIC,

    not Music made from machines.

  • Makes you wonder why someone who doesn't seem to care about music from machines even ended up at a tutorial like this, doesn't it?

  • Great video. Thanks for taking the time to brake it down. There really isn't a lot of information out there about Elastic Time.

  • Thanks for a clear and lucid demo of this useful tool.

  • Great Video.. Thanks a million... I teach kids Pro tools... And this was done PERFECT!... More 7.4... More... 7.4..=) Thanks a lot!
