@PennyDreadful1 I Saw Sabbat live in Glasgow long ago they were brilliant the tiny crowd and the road crew were awesome .It still makes me smile thinking of that gig .
@feckneddy wish i could say the same about a particular folk metal band called ensiferum. theyre dead to me, as harsh as it sounds, without a particular lead vocalist/guitarist.
@PennyDreadful1 ...... memorized every word... not bad for an american, eh?... a couple years back, Cradle of Filth played in America, and i had the chance to talk with Dani... we spent most of our time chatting about Sabbat, Martin, Skyclad, and Jeff Wayne's musical version of the War of the Worlds... not all Americans are without class and culture... (but most of them are.)
I remember buying this album on tape when it first came out,it's still fantastic..decent instrument playing/vocals & lyrics that make you think when you listen to them :)
@ccatdaddy64 yes sir. what AngelicStorm1 said. the style then began to appear in scandinavia with bands like Shaman, Korpiklaani, Trollfest, Finntroll, etc.
I'm suprised by some of the comments from English folk saying they've never heard of this band. I'm South African and have been enjoying Skyclad since 1998.
@samothesamo unfortunatly England has a reputation of inventing musical genres that no-one within said country likes :( Hell a shit ton of people dont know who iron maiden or black sabbeth are so you cant expect them to know some of the more obscure stuff.Again :(
Folk metal article in Wikipedia wrongly attributes Skyclad with starting the style. I think only the modern folk metal (after 1990), folk music and european heavy metal has always been in close contact, starting from Led Zeppelin.
well since this is irish type music, thats what it has to do with. also, i take it based on your harsh stance towards irish peoplle you are british. since you brought that up, irish were oppressed by the tyrants of britain. the freed the catholic countries but kept protestant ireland under british oppression. What is your response to thus
skyclad is good now, it was not only martin, i admire him, but he was not skyclad, now its the kevin ridley era, and the last album from the clad is good, not as the wayward sons, but its nice to hear it
The new stuff is good, some very good songs, but live in terms of vocals he cannot deliver the early tracks with the same power and conviction as Martin.
martin is a modern day poet of the highest order hung out with the band when they played dublin in 1996 on the piss for the day and a great gig afterwards skyclad are fuckin legendary and top blokes too what a day!!!!!
Is it because it's more Celtic then Anglo Saxon (even though Walkyier is rooted in English paganism). Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Norway & similar areas are still in tune with that somewhat. It could be pluged into the fact that historically many "Celtic" countries have a history of anti imperialism that bonds them & amplifies the influence of their shared heritage & thus mabey we are more likely to like this sort of thing. ???
No you misunderstood. Im' not commenting on the fact that they have a sizeable audience abroad but on the fact that they have virtually no audience in their home country. When I was a student in the UK few brits from those I talked too even had heard of them. Weird...
You're so right, I only found them out recently, and now I'm really into them, but no other Brits seem to have heard of them. But British taste in music has gone down the shitter nowadays so I don't expect many Brits to appreciate a band as great as Skyclad
I understand (I think) - what I mean is that because the English dont identify with that tradition anymore (Apart from stories like Robin Hood) they dont have an appreciation of the musics sentiment & therefore no appreciation of the music. Hi from Ireland.
Some would say that is because British culture nowadays got "bastardized" because of all the immigrants coming in Britain. I don't believe that tough. Mixing 9 times out of 10 reinvigorates not deteriorates a culture. I think what you say happens in Britain is a worldwide phenomenon due to the "new world order" and shit.
Ireland, beautiful proud country. Did you know that according to some theories Greeks and Celts may be (very distantly) related?
Oh definatly a world wide thing. It's funny you mention the mixed culture argument, I was going to say mabey it could be an influence but I steered away from it. I agree - it's not bastardized but mabey it's more of a "Uniculture" with no one ruling trend but I suppose that's the same idea just different words. As for NWO - I am begining to believe it. North American, European, African & Asian unions? - Im voting no to the Lisbon Treaty (AGAIN!) - were not called "The Fighting Irish" for nothing
Fuckin' hell i had the damn signed sweat shirt of this album for 17 years and fuckin' left it back at my old place when i moved. How gutted i was.
This has to be the most legendary folk band of all time, sabbat were just as classic, i saw them too. LEGENDS in the making. Id like to see fukin' nu-metal do as great as this, MY ARSE....!!!!
Although it may be a foreign concept to you, not everybody in the world pronounces things like an American... It was England's language first after all.
Just FYI , an ass is a donkey, your arse is what you sit on.
wow i didnt know that, i thougt the canadians and native americans put their heads together to create the english language. no shit its englands language i was just askin what you say arse for, and its not a foreign concept, i'm not american at all, i just happen to live here
Just a GREAT Band! Am a HUGE Sabbat fan, was sad to see Martin go, but was very happy when he created Skyclad :) This album and "Prince of the Poverty Line" are my faves! Walkier- the Dickens/Shakespear Bard of Metal Lyrics! -MAVIII (prOgulus. c o m)

On the contrary, I think Skyclad's early stuff is much angrier both with respect music and lyrics. This vocal style fits them perfectly.

AS much I love skyclad, Martin vocals were terrible at the begginning of the band. Epic song, anyways.
axzck 1 year ago
@axzck I agree entirely! I love his lyrics, but the vocals are... yeah, terrible, and don't give the band the feel that I like with the later stuff.

@olivemitten Have you guys listened to Martins vocals on Sabbat's A history of a time to come?

@PennyDreadful1 Well, now I have, and while they fit thrash metal very well, but not really this stuff, in my opinion.
