its hard for my imagination to think of music going beyond this point. my scope becomes obtuse and Hitlerian in the midst of this. she leaves me tired and withdrawn. I must speak for all musicians when i say that this person is a living hell. A wicked person, to be so formal and yet so free.
I am moved to the heart. Thank you for the heart felt, and the feelings I felt you shared. Thank you Jonie. I felt my person, heart, soul moved to action. Thanks your my heart beating strong.
All this talk about holiness now It must be the start of the latest style Is it all books and words Or do you really feel it? Do you really laugh? Do you really care? Do you really smile When you smile? You criticize and you flatter You imitate the best And the rest you memorize You know the times you impress me most Are the times when you dont try
This comes from one of the most underrated albums ever recorded. You can still hear the loneliness and cynicism in Joni's last truly folk album. The songs are performed without backup. Court & Spark is certainly more upbeat, and very different. While not as deep, it contains many great numbers. As I recall, Hissing was not fondly received at the time of its release in 1975, but is now recognized as a great work. While she did not always sell the most records, Joni's genius is legend.
Blackkendoll, I hate to be greedy, but do you have Joni's "Borderline" from "Turbulent Indigo"? There's not much posted from that CD, and it has some great songs. Joni's version of "How Do You Stop?" was taken off. Don't know why. Let's hope she's recovering from whatever illness they claim she has, so she can grace the world with another classic CD in 2010. We all need whatever light she cares to shine.
Very thought-provoking insights. To have a woman like that and to somehow miss the mark with her. So sad, hopefully more than a few will avoid this disaster in their lives.
The story of my gay life... dealing with all these men who care nothing but getting off... and then send you messages that they are lonely and depressed cuz they have no man to love...
A girl gave me this album as a gift when she broke up with me in 1971 after I came back from Viet Nam. The song nailed me right between the eyes and I still remember what a bad person I was back then. I will never forget the lesson Joni.
@bill3402 Good story, but couldn't have been '71 as it wasn't released until '72; but hey, my memory's not what it used to be either and i haven't got |Vietnam as an excuse; so respect.
@23071957jazzman You are right. I came back in March 71 and got out of the Army in Dec 71. so it must have been in 72 because I was back in San Diego when this happened.
War back then was not at all like today. I spent 30 days at a time in the jungle without a shower and slept on the ground.
@23071957jazzman No problem, I am over the war, unlike many others. If you want to talk more write me back at billknight@cox.net at a less public format.
This was written not that long after she had her child adopted. Hence "no child to raise". I don't know which man in her life it's about but she's clearly very sad.
She tells it just how it is. My youth was spent listening to her, this is one of my favourites, and I'm sorry that I didn't comment earlier. What a wonderful song, a myriad of applause I would like to send her...
This is going to take tremendous recall on your part, your comment is 8 mos old. Why do you say she was lonely & frustrated at this point of her life??
I see, thanks for the fast response. I become a fan of hers while in the Navy, a bunch of us were...still are as we still email each other, music is still a main topic, and I was discharged in 74. Its odd to me that she is deified to the point of obsession by so many people...guess I'm just as guilty. Her music is virtually perfect, and was a source of escape for me. Thanks again.
She seems to be singing about a narcissistc (spelling) personality type. I need to play this around my husband!

"You come to me like a little boy and I give you my scorn and my praise;
You think I'm like your mother, or another lover, or your sister, or the Queen of your Dreams,
But I'm just another silly girl when love makes a fool of me."
Just another verse from probably the greatest poet of the last 50 years.

"..lookin for affection, and respect, a little passion and, you wont stimulation, nothin more, (that's what I think).."
It just rolls of the poetic tongue no?..
and so literal as well..
It's like a great love letter..
honest and true..
only it's a song..
it's a song too..
I guess, y'know.. it's Joni-Art..
etc..
aint nothin like it..

her child was given up for adoption.
She writes about no child to raise because
she has extra time.

she was on the edge during this period and you can tell with the lyrics.
So lonely and frustrated with life, but still brings out a classic album of hers.

This is going to take tremendous recall on your part, your comment is 8 mos old. Why do you say she was lonely & frustrated at this point of her life??
thepill01 3 years ago
Well this album was recorded in the year that followed the making of blue, which Joni admittedly describes as a dark and disturbed period in her life.
It's a tad more hopeful than Blue, but the melancholy is still there.
