hey, this kata is awesome, i learn my kata's of utube and then go to class and get corrections and i decided to learn of you cause your kata is amazing!!! So fast and precise and PERFECT!!!! and i dont care much about my individual styles way of doing that kata, because i saw some differences and thought your styles way was much better!!! keep it up, by the way whats your name so i can look up other kata you've done? :)
doing the kata this way is killing karate, Im not saying he is not a good karateka but this sport karate is not real karate. Look at Nakazato sensei of shorinkan thats is real karate.
This is my favourite Kata... but I dont like how he performs it.... This is kanku sho id doesnt have to be this fast.... like Jion or Enpi etc.... and there are some mistakes...
The power this guy has is incredible and its shown in the kata, but he needs to work on the katas timing, the kata needs slow parts and parts under tension to flow as it should, a good performance though
From my view the Kata is performed very quick and 'snappy', not sure if this is correct depending on how is was taught. I was taught to make everything count in Shotokan, i.e. he slaps his feet on the ground when punching stepping forward, I used to do the same thing when I first started because I thought it sounded powerful and impressive, I was corrected pretty quickly. I was taught to use my body when punching by sinking my weight into the punch. He got a good reaction though? more focus?
He let his heal come up when stepping backward in zenkutsudachi right at the end... that's the sort of thing you normally drill out of people by 6th kyu.
@Winterdenni Well spotted! I was taught not to 'slap' my feet when performing tecnique as you don't get your body weight 'sinking' into the movement. M.Kawasoe when performing kata, looks very slow in comparison but you can see the power and body weight being moved in every single technique! He good reaction though here? I've competed ion open style Karate before, the judges encouraged Seidokan to rush through their Kata and were not impressed with with Shotokan kata? Is competition kata diff?
I think some points were lost because the starting point and ending point were not in the same place for the kata. But i personally thought the kata looked good with the kihon so nice job. It takes courage to get up and display this for people to see.
Yup, too rushed. To the point that he's lost his kime, and was concentrating more on speed rather than on the 'stress points' of the kata. Probably a good 'modern' interpretation, if at all, but veering from the traditional view. Very athletic player though, very good basics too.
I agree with you. However what frustrates me most is that people refuse to move on. Why is this too rushed? Too rushed for the traditional understanding of the kata when introduced 50 years ago, however, as you said - for 2010, this is a fantastic effort. I think kata evolves and to be a good martial artist, we must too.
@FurtherRecords I would like to perform this kata exactly like he does,
the "flow" should not be throughout all the kata, but through that couple of techniques that you perform in full power and speed; and then release your muscles and prepare for the next couple, you need to breathe inbetween.
remember that karate aims at defeating an opponent with two or three techniques, (and they must be fast) if you link all of them you're not able to use your maximum strength for each one.
No. The problem is judges who allow this to impress them. If judges were told to judge kata not be wowed by flashy substance-less karate - people would stop performing this awful imitation of kata.
Der Fluss muss von innen kommen. Bei einer competition wie hier ist viel zu viel Aufregung dabei. Ich bin sicher, der Junge kann´s besser. Das Video tut ihm keinen Gefallen.
all you muppets giving negative feedback about this text book perfect kata, put a video of yourselves doing the same kata on here so we can see how it should be done.... or not!
He almost too crisp, there is no flow between techniques. It's as if he's going from one finishing pose to the next, but missing the transitional phases of the technique. The motion is very small too, not much amplitude except the kicks, which are nicely done. He's very fast, obviously trains very hard. Go back and look at the old guys like Osaka and

The point is not use your diaphram in a kiai, you're supposed to use your abdominal muscles to force the air out of your lungs. This guy is screaming, not making a kiai. Also, his front knee in back stance is too far forward, his reverse open hand block is way too slow, and his jump was low and he didn't complete the spin properly. Even with these rather large mistakes he has really good form and sticks his techniques.
Nice kata! This other dude sounds like all he does is read MMA magazines and and watch it on TV and then critisize traditional martial arts. He's talking out his ass. any shotokan practitioner knows the friggin bunkai to that move. Sure it would be a fucking submission if all you knew how to do was grapple lol. Man sorry had to vent on these douche bags leaving comments like that on traditional karate videos. Keep up the training dude
Fresh black belt huh..? haha Nice!! But whats up w ur wrist grab move before ur kick? That's not a straight/strike , The bunkai is a wrist grab submission none the less.. Good job though..

@alangti21 depends on the competition. Some tournaments will want to see real traditional budo kata, others will want things as fast as possible.
