Employer matching payroll tax - 7.65%, workers comp ins- ~10% for me, liabilty ins, unemployment ins, health ins contribs, account collecting... The boss is working to benefit YOU.
@jbtvt with regards to how your wage is divided up, of course the boss doesn't get it all, he/she will be a taxpayer too, just like you. but unless you live in sweden most of the money that's made goes into the pocket of the majority shareholder and (at least here in the UK) those earnings are the ones which are taxed the least.
as an employee you do all of the work and take a tiny fraction of the profit. they deliberately keep you down there so you can't knock them off their high perch.

this isn't the case. numerous recent studies have shown that people are not primarily motivated by money and with a given task it's been found that the higher the monetary reward offered the worse the job was done. i personally can testify to this. i find i do a better job of something when it's a favour for a friend, and not someone offering payment.

@revjimbeam I'm a major Tom Waits fan but Cohen's been writing poetry in this style since the 1950's and recording music since 1967. Waits first record was released in 1973 but it took him much longer to develop his style. I agree that this song and "black wings" sound VERY much alike but they were both released the same year (1992) and got a lot of attention. I think it's a coincidence. Both artists are far too creative to rip off someone else. They're both great writers.

NBK isn't a Tarantino movie, it's an Oliver Stone movie. Tarantino wrote some of the original script, which was also part of the script for True Romance, but Stone bought it cheap and changed it a lot, Tarantino hated it and refused to be credited at all for it.

@Rabsputin I agree that capital gains shouldn't be treated differently than payroll income. Any system is going to need minor tweaks, but of all economic systems, capitalism has done more for the advancement of the human condition than any other, far and away. Take an honest look at your life vs the life of anyone living in a modern or recent non-capitalist society.
If people don't have to exert themselves to survive,ie socialism, they won't; innovation, standard of living, and society suffer.

this isn't the case. numerous recent studies have shown that people are not primarily motivated by money and with a given task it's been found that the higher the monetary reward offered the worse the job was done. i personally can testify to this. i find i do a better job of something when it's a favour for a friend, and not someone offering payment.

Pure capitalism is going out, working your ass off and if you succeed you get to keep more, because you are taking the risks, if you fail you starve. Socialism is going out, and working you ass off, and paying a big cut to the govt (the "boss") in exchange for security nets. You don't make bank, you don't starve, you subsist regardless of talent or drive, working to support the failures at life.

it's like dominos. the higher up the food chain you are the more damage you can cause to those further down. a regular individual (not a fortune 500 ceo for example) has a very small number of dominos to knock over, often times it's only one, but a captain of industry can fuck a thousand people by signing a piece of paper.

@revjimbeam I'm a major Tom Waits fan but Cohen's been writing poetry in this style since the 1950's and recording music since 1967. Waits first record was released in 1973 but it took him much longer to develop his style. I agree that this song and "black wings" sound VERY much alike but they were both released the same year (1992) and got a lot of attention. I think it's a coincidence. Both artists are far too creative to rip off someone else. They're both great writers.

NBK isn't a Tarantino movie, it's an Oliver Stone movie. Tarantino wrote some of the original script, which was also part of the script for True Romance, but Stone bought it cheap and changed it a lot, Tarantino hated it and refused to be credited at all for it.
