Warning to everyone watching this video. This is merely an experiment done in a swimming pool and could never hold true in real world conditions. There is merit in the belt system I must admit. The question is will it be water-tight long to keep the water out to remain dry for several hours if the situation demanded it? Will the next person remember to put on the belt or tighten it?I know of two people that have drowned using waders. Rather buy a wet suit it is safer.
Excellent Video. I guess like they say in myth busters the Theory of "You will drown if you wear waders and capsize your Yak" is BUSTED. Thanks for the informative video...
Let's see a real world test with a typical fisherman falling in a river current and getting a couple of gallons in the waders. Water in waders will displace the same volume in the river, but where the water is aerated you *will* lose buoyancy. The bigger problem is the increased weight. You'll have more inertia and more momentum. That makes it harder to swim, so you can be in the water longer and get more tired and colder. That increases the chance of entrapment or flush drowning.
This video is all well and good in a warm water California pool with no tidal or estuary currrent involved in the test. i was involved in a semi cold water incident with breathable waders and belt with pfd and was very lucky to survive, Water up to my knees in the waders along with current did not allow me to re-enter my SOT scupper =pro=tw, the only reason i am here today was my nearness to shore and help from a buddy. Buy a drysuit or a wetsuit for much better protection.
its alot differnt whilst fishing and wading the other day i sliped and was submersed and the water that was in my waders about the belt was enough to make it difficult to stand back up, very scary to say the least and ive had to pysicly drag my buddies who where not wearing a belt out of the water but then again we do wear looser warders than what you are wearing
The wading belt is key, and with the addition of the paddle jacket on top you get almost no water in the waders. Add the PFD and it is a safe system. Again it is very important that you can do a self rescue so you spend as little time in the water as possible.
I have made the switch to waders on the strength of this video and am wearing them for the first time tomorrow. If you don't hear from me, it means I drowned.
Just remember the waders are great for flat water but stay away from rapids. Make sure you wear your PFD and make sure you can do a quick self rescue.
Well I survived. I'm convinved; waders are perfectly safe. I was debating whether to put the kayak away for the winter, as I couldn't afford a full dry suit. I can now keep fishing throughout the winter.

You live in La Jolla. Do it in open water.
This would be like me testing my parachute by jumping off the kitchen table.

Terrific video Jim. It helped prompt me to finally buy a pair of waders last week.
Now to see if they'll help me kill more yellowtail! :D

He appears to have been standing up in the pool when he re-entered.
Re-do this test in 10 feet of water with a true re-entry and I'll listen.
Do it in waves and wind with fishing rods, anchor ropes and nets and I'll give it more credibility.

I just spent the past week in Chesapeake bay and it is real cold there. The waders with layers of warm clothing made it very comfortable
