I think it one of the most important & pivitol scenes in the film...
I'm not trying to justify anything; rape is indeed a crime...but this is a MOVIE that masterfully intertwines the theme of betrayal throughout (think of all the betrayal that happens to several characters). Noodles rape of Deborah is the ultimate betrayal of both his love for her and her love for him...it is a pivitol scene in that it foreshadows the betrayal Noodles and others are about to experience...betrayal, rage, anger, violence...this scene captures all of this and is critical to the film

The Rape Scene is not a key to the movie theme. It should have never happend, it was Unexpected, Very Extremely Disturbing, it does not help the plot nor would it hurt the plot if it was not on film. Weird, dont know what Leone was thinking. I have trouble liking Noodles after Rape Scene.

@utubegod35 Maybe not attractive in the traditional sense, but I think she was cast well. She's sort of like Noodle's "Rosebud", that thing from his childhood he clings on to throughout the entirety of his life. Even if she's not as attractive as Noodles remembered, he still has the memories. That being said I really don't think she's "ugly" but to each his own I guess.

How can you love Noodles. The man was not only a Killer & Thief but he Crossed the Line with the Rape of Deborah. Very Sad scene I can still picture it & hearing Deborah begging that Rapist to get off of her. And Noodles Ratted on his long time Friends with the Bank Heist, its his fault Cockeye & Patsy died cause the Cops knew they were coming. Serioulsy what kind of Gangster Rats to the Police. The best thing that ever happened to DeNiro was that he didn't get that part. Because of that, he got to play the more powerful character of the younger Don Corleone in Godfather Part II. You do realize, don't you, that it was those scenes, and that period, in Part II that everyone enjoyed, right?

Duh! Yes I've seen the film. DeNiro had a HUGE part in Godfather Part II. You miss the point. If he had played Michael Corleone in The Godfather, then it would have been impossible for him to play young Vito in Part II, right?

Yes GENIUS! I lived the moment as a kid and blew it too. That's what made this scene with one of the most prettiest young actresses, sweetest soundtrack & brilliant story so heartbreaking. Emotionally I find "Once Upon" more beautiful than 'The Godfather'
