When Glen talks about having a sense of energy when doing rough animation it reminded me of how I describe the process:

Once I get into the flow of doing my rough animations I consider is as a sort of alchemy. Appropriately so since a lot of people see hand-drawn animation as an outdated process, but that certain sense of alchemy I get when putting the graphite onto the page makes it all the more worth while and fun.

So always try to find a muse that drives you in your work

@colleenfrances That was actually a gift from the Japanese voice actor of Rapunzel in the Japanese release of Tangled. She gave it to Glen Keane & he gave her a sketch of Rapunzel, Pascal & her together. A sketch like that by him would be worth thousands, and I think it's sweet they exchanged sketches. :)

I would advice Mr Keane to stop drawing in such formulaic style. He is quite skilful and could do it if he tries. Maybe he should start checking on Klimt or Schiele's work for instance.

@Garramedia Actually, Glen's artwork and style is based upon allot of the old artist such as Gustav, Degas, and many others. Obviously for Disney you have to draw in their limits, but his artistic knowledge is based upon many of the old Illustrators. Go check out "Animation Podcast" there was an interview (2 parts) on Glen Keane.

@Garramedia Glen draws Rapunzel in Disney's classic house style. Most of Disney's fairytales where drawn this way. Many of Disney's other animated features do not follow the Disney house style. Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, and Hercules all have distinct styles.

@TheBomb2012 I don't know if this is a serious or sarcastic question. But in case it is serious, no one is born with ability like this. It is learned. Glen Keane went to art school (CalArts) and actually was not accepted into the program he applied for (painting). Everyone has to learn to see and record the forms they see, that is all drawing is. Once one has built up a large mental library, they can recall things from memory and distort the figure any way they wish. Anyone can learn to draw
