I've only seen interviews of Tarja in Finnish. Can she speak English, or did she just sing the lyrics phonetically? Obviously, I wouldn't think any less of her or the band, I'm just curious. Does anyone know the answer to this?
The band's letter like if a 15 years old emo wrote it down, I am really sorry for Tarja, but after Tuomas letter the whole band is a big bunch of kids in my eyes, eually to 0. I really know how Tarja feels, my friends abandoned me after 11 years of friendship (in 2006) because I had married. It looks like that not everyone can follow the path to the light :D My girlfriends stayed on the level of high schoolers, - also 55 ppl didn't read the letter :D
In my opinion it was jealousy and envy on so many levels in that band.
Tarja has 2 bands summing 2-3 times the people in Nightwish. They are all reputed musicians of different ages and nationality . All of them absolutely adore her.
If you look how she behaves with her fans and the people around her.. not like a friend, like a sister.
Nobody can be so dissimulant, she really is great and NW guys really were assholes.
So she was planning to leave, she said them 2.5 years in advance, that next album will be her last with the band, and all that is true? She admits it, so band's open letter seems genuine and true... And decision they made was logical....
.. and instead of a farewell show and a hug, why not fire her publicly with a defamatory letter. Let's pick on her family and everything she stands for, while we are at it.
@maxadrienne2 for sure it seems cowardice to break up like this - but if they decided together, all 4 of them - then maybe they really had a good reasons to do so. Public doesn't know the whole story but I would put my money on the band if I had to pick side. And look at them now, they are doing really good and Anette is great, and they proved that the band can do without Tarja, but Tarja cannot without band. Just the opposite she and Marcelo thought.
The "who did better afterwards" is an endless discussion. Objectively, Nightwish did 2 albums which are considered subpar (at least compared to their old ones) and Tarja did 3 albums and 1 classical DVD. Tarja also created a new neo-classical band (Harus) which is a success even if it's only a few months old. Nightwish albums gained no formal honors, Tarja did. And so on.
Myself, since the breakup I attended zero NW concerts and over 10 of Tarja's. So did all my friends.
Having read the Nightwish biography it seems that both parties have valid arguments.
It seems that the simple matter of lack of proper communication allowed issues to fester to the point where they exploded. Everyone in and around Nightwish is responsible for this, not just Tuomas or Tarja.
If these issues had been addressed when they should have been then all of this would have been avoided. But it DID happen, an no one person is to blame for it.
I think the reason they gave her the open letter was to ensure that the facts were out in the open. If she mysteriously got kicked out the band, the press would stir up a shitstorm of rumours and false information. Although it may seem cowardly, I think it was the best way. Also, I don't think tarja has any defence for most of the stuff that was in that letter, as it was fact. She barely contributed to the band.

@bobsterfish Are you fucking kidding me? Barely? As far as I've heard, one of the things that people remember the most is the voice that contributes to it. You cannot possibly tell me that Tarja's voice had absolutely no influence to the success and appeal of the band. After about 14 years of listening NW and Tarja, attending their gigs and meeting them personally several times, I did make my own opinion about who is to blame for what.
This will never affect what music I like and how I appreciate an artist's value.

As she said, with the letter that guys wrote to her, they proved that they haven't been REAL friends...I think the truth is always in the middle, but Tuomas in particular had his personal reasons in all this situation. Indeed such a pity it happened this way. They could have talked to her face to face and tell her they were not pleased with this behaviour and that some things had to change. Really I hate people who are silent about it and spare everything up till one day and then let u know in a filthy way.
But apparently Tarja would leave the band anyway...so there would have been an end to the band as it originally was anyway. It hurts that Nightwish was not n1 to Tarja as it was for the other bandmembers.

Tarja is much better in her solo career than Nightwish with Anette. WLB is better than My Winter Storm. But I must say: There´s no album as Once and the show of End Of an Era was the best I´ve ever seen. I wish I was there. Anyway I think Tarja is THE BEST EVER!
Stoped listening to Nightwish (new Nightwish that is) and dont listen Taria. What they have to offer now just is not "it" .. just missing something. The reason Tarja was kicked from the band because for two whole years she was a jerk to the people who never stopped caring about her , and she kept getting more ingrossed in the money factor more than the joy of singing music for people.
Tarja was super talented thats why it aint easy to find a person who sounds JUST like her because she was irreplacable.
But none the less Tarja did it to herself and she knows this probably and regrets it

For me, personally, songwriter is more important to band than the one who sings. Nightwish is Tuomas's band. Tarja and Anette are just persons who sings his songs, his art. Deal with that. And all people, including Tarja should remember that without Nightwish and Tuomas she would be nothing.
We cannot presume that she would have been nothing without NW. She always have been a prodigy child, went to all those academies and received all that training. She would have probably become a (more or less) sucessfull classical singer.

On AFF and Oceanborn she sung with just classical style, yet she did not have her personal voice back then. Later she started to change her voice so she would fit better in Nightwish. Shure, she has nice voice, but I really think that NW changed it a lot - to better direction.

6. "Anteroom of death" is a complex blend of baroque and metal. It has small flaws to be honest, but it's very well done overall, especially for a debutante composer.
7. Anything Tarja sings sounds formidable: rock, metal, opera, lied, trance, pop, church music. Anything.
Tuomas latest work, combined with a weak voice .. well, statistically 2/3 of old fans just abandoned NW in disgust.

If you don't like Nightwish anymore because she left you can simply listen to her new songs, she's still singing, just not with the same band. There's no reason to throw hate on Anette or any other members of the band, they are all as important for the band as Tarja was. And why so much hate on Tuomas? There wouldn't be Nightwish without him, Tarja might have a good voice, but she's singing what Tuomas wrote.

- NW new music is over the top simplified and commercial while Tarja has a very cult and less accessible approach in her music
- NW is a band while Tarja is a solo artist. In metal in particular that matters big time. Btw can you remember any successful solo artist in metal, besides Tarja?
- NW is a band backed by a huge apartus, money and interests. Tarja has her husband.. and basically she self finances her promotion. In showbusiness (in any business tbh) the promotion is everything.
- NW is an old band with a great history and Tarja is solo since a few years.
And so on..
As you see, NW has all the arguments to sell more but they really did not. Tarja's albums reached gold and platinum before NW albums by the way.

When I see her cry it makes me want to devour the flesh of the people who made her feel that way. I don't believe they're bad people, but I still can't forgive them for this. Not least because they succeeded in deceiving me for nearly two years until I opened my fucking eyes. They made me feel so ashamed.

Standard heavy metal, with classical overtones. What made the classical part awesome was Tarja. That is why I cannot listen to anything new Nightwish has made. And I really, genuinely tried. There are always two sides of things, in the bands point of view they felt that the chemistry between the band and Tarja was inexistable, since she didn't try to put alot of effort in the band itself. She sang their songs live and on record but trust me, playing in a band with one person always absent one way or another is frankly quite terrible. The actual kicking is manytimes a relief on both parts, since both sides are hurting but they still feel like the have to stay. You dont kick for naft

The guys and her are doing great after their paths are separated. She has her own career and two great albums, in which she does a lot of the songwriting. Nightwish has their second album coming out with Anette soon.

Nigthwish is a beautiful band, it's a beautiful creation from Nightwish and even the critics which doesn't like metal genre said that Tarja's voice suits the music unusually well... I think the truest public account of what caused "the split" is in the Nightwish book. Because it tells both sides of the story, and is written by a third party. Both sides were very much responsible for the bitterness between them. The other members of Nightwish wanted to tour like crazy and play anywhere and everywhere. Tarja wanted to go where they made money, which was a mistake. Equally, the NW guys didn't always give her what she needed - a room to prepare, to change clothes, etc.
Tarja is the only fool here. Any idiot that expected us fans to buy pieces of shit like My Winter Storm and What Lies Beneath is a fucking moron. Also, she's faking it, she knows she was a cunt towards the other members. Her solo career fucking SUCKS!

I really know how Tarja feels, my friends abandoned me after 11 years of friendship (in 2006) because I had married. It looks like that not everyone can follow the path to the light :D My girlfriends stayed on the level of high schoolers, - also 55 ppl didn't read the letter :D

Tarja has 2 bands summing 2-3 times the people in Nightwish. They are all reputed musicians of different ages and nationality . All of them absolutely adore her.

Public doesn't know the whole story but I would put my money on the band if I had to pick side. The "who did better afterwards" is an endless discussion. Objectively, Nightwish did 2 albums which are considered subpar (at least compared to their old ones) and Tarja did 3 albums and 1 classical DVD. Tarja also created a new neo-classical band (Harus) which is a success even if it's only a few months old. Nightwish albums gained no formal honors, Tarja did. And so on.
Myself, since the breakup I attended zero NW concerts and over 10 of Tarja's. So did all my friends.

Having read the Nightwish biography it seems that both parties have valid arguments.
It seems that the simple matter of lack of proper communication allowed issues to fester to the point where they exploded. Everyone in and around Nightwish is responsible for this, not just Tuomas or Tarja.
If these issues had been addressed when they should have been then all of this would have been avoided. But it DID happen, an no one person is to blame for it.

I think the reason they gave her the open letter was to ensure that the facts were out in the open. If she mysteriously got kicked out the band, the press would stir up a shitstorm of rumours and false information. Although it may seem cowardly, I think it was the best way. Also, I don't think tarja has any defence for most of the stuff that was in that letter, as it was fact. She barely contributed to the band.

This will never affect what music I like and how I appreciate an artist's value.

Indeed such a pity it happened this way. They could have talked to her face to face and tell her they were not pleased with this behaviour and that some things had to change. Really I hate people who are silent about it and spare everything up till one day and then let u know in a filthy way.
But apparently Tarja would leave the band anyway...so there would have been an end to the band as it originally was anyway. It hurts that Nightwish was not n1 to Tarja as it was for the other bandmembers.

The reason Tarja was kicked from the band because for two whole years she was a jerk to the people who never stopped caring about her , and she kept getting more ingrossed in the money factor more than the joy of singing music for people.
Tarja was super talented thats why it aint easy to find a person who sounds JUST like her because she was irreplacable.

For me, personally, songwriter is more important to band than the one who sings. Nightwish is Tuomas's band. Tarja and Anette are just persons who sings his songs, his art. Deal with that. And all people, including Tarja should remember that without Nightwish and Tuomas she would be nothing.

On AFF and Oceanborn she sung with just classical style, yet she did not have her personal voice back then. Later she started to change her voice so she would fit better in Nightwish. Shure, she has nice voice, but I really think that NW changed it a lot - to better direction.

6. "Anteroom of death" is a complex blend of baroque and metal. It has small flaws to be honest, but it's very well done overall, especially for a debutante composer.
7. Anything Tarja sings sounds formidable: rock, metal, opera, lied, trance, pop, church music. Anything.
Tuomas latest work, combined with a weak voice .. well, statistically 2/3 of old fans just abandoned NW in disgust.

Just a thought I like both Tarja and Annette and yes Nightwish could have handled it a little better but in the end Tarja was just being greedy and self absorbed so they had to leave her behind. Annette is good at her style of music and Tarja is good at her style. They shouldn't even be compared.

- NW is a band backed by a huge apartus, money and interests. Tarja has her husband.. and basically she self finances her promotion. In showbusiness (in any business tbh) the promotion is everything.
- NW is an old band with a great history and Tarja is solo since a few years.
And so on..
As you see, NW has all the arguments to sell more but they really did not. Tarja's albums reached gold and platinum before NW albums by the way.

When I see her cry it makes me want to devour the flesh of the people who made her feel that way. I don't believe they're bad people, but I still can't forgive them for this. Not least because they succeeded in deceiving me for nearly two years until I opened my fucking eyes. They made me feel so ashamed.

They are cowardly cunts who couldn't even discuss with her such an important decision after all she contributed, and such a long time together. She was at the very least, the face of the fucking band, and probably the biggest reason why people liked Nightwish. And I guess it was karma that gave them that awful singer after Tarja. Now they make pretty much the same music, without soul. Tarja was the soul of Nightwish, and now it's hollow.

Also I disagree about Anette, I think she is a wonderful singer in her own right. She's the best thing about current Nightwish just as Tarja was the best thing about old Nightwish; it's just that Tarja is a better best thing than Anette. For me, anyway, and obviously for you too.

Where is Tarja in "Kiss while the lips are still red"... ? This is what I mean by "soul"; not necessarily the musical quality, but the feeling you get when you hear the song. Also, no offense, but Nightwish is really just above average musically. Standard heavy metal, with classical overtones. What made the classical part awesome was Tarja. That is why I cannot listen to anything new Nightwish has made. And I really, genuinely tried. Many times.

There are always two sides of things, in the bands point of view they felt that the chemistry between the band and Tarja was inexistable, since she didn't try to put alot of effort in the band itself. She sang their songs live and on record but trust me, playing in a band with one person always absent one way or another is frankly quite terrible. The actual kicking is manytimes a relief on both parts, since both sides are hurting but they still feel like the have to stay. You dont kick for naft

Tuomas asshole didn't bring Nigtwish with Tarja to my country. I was little then, but my biggest wish was to attend their concert, but they have never been in my country, except on Egzit festival with Annette. I don't like his decision for many reasons, but I HATE him because of that! I cried when I watched their concert with Tarja on my computer. :'(

The guys and her are doing great after their paths are separated. She has her own career and two great albums, in which she does a lot of the songwriting. Nightwish has their second album coming out with Anette soon.
But still, they really should have skipped the defaming public letter and talked to her face to face, it's true.

Nigthwish is a beautiful band, it's a beautiful creation from Nightwish and even the critics which doesn't like metal genre said that Tarja's voice suits the music unusually well... But we as the fans we don't know what actually happens within Nightwish. For me, I choose not to believe either side... Open letters and tarja's tear are not good enough for me... But one thing I would like to suggest even though its a little late, if neither the band or Tarja could tolerate among themselves...

Tarja left Nightwish and Nightwish became just another Metal band with a female singer.
Anette is good, don't get me wrong, but Tarja brought that special Twist to Nightwish that put Nightwish in a special spot of Metal bands with female singers.
Sad to see her cry, yet glad to know them ex-band members can't think anymore bad things about her.

I think the truest public account of what caused "the split" is in the Nightwish book. Because it tells both sides of the story, and is written by a third party. Both sides were very much responsible for the bitterness between them. The other members of Nightwish wanted to tour like crazy and play anywhere and everywhere. Tarja wanted to go where they made money, which was a mistake. Equally, the NW guys didn't always give her what she needed - a room to prepare, to change clothes, etc.
