  • Serena's for me.

  • But Anna Kournikova was a great player ! and it's good to say that she had THE BEST really THE BEST full hair ponytail of all time hahahaha Lol

  • Personally I think Kim Clijsters has the best 2 handed BH ever. She gets that extra little bit of spin on the ball so that it curls away from her opponents.

  • @StewNWT Admittedly I overlooked hers. I didn't think there was much to her backhand. It's simple, yet deceptively effective. She can wide you out with ease or just effortlessly go down the line on it.

  • @hajime2k it's definitely one of the most potent and consistent. Watch her matches vs. Henin from 2010 and her victory over Li Na in the Aussie Open final, not to mention her victory over Venus in 2005 at the USO (most incredible 2 sets of women's tennis ever, the first 2 of that 3 set match). Her BH is lethal, and has that extra angle that others lack. Certainly better than Sveta/Dinara/Lena's. I think hers, JJ's, Maria and Serena's are the most deadly.

  • JJ HAVE A BEST BACKHAND ON THE WORLD!

  • Now there's a laugh Venus Williams .... an elegant backhand... IMO on of the ugliest shots I have evert seen.

  • I like Venus of them all its more elegant than anything sure its not the best but i still love it

  • Chris Evert had the best two-hander of all-time, it was a natural two-hander the second hand or arm was used as stability. Her shoulder turn was natural and hard to read , and her angels and short and long were incredible. Most all players if not all that followed her, used the second hand or arm to brush up on the ball or to change direction or steer the ball. Hers was so natural that she could let go and hit a one handed shot, she also hit the best inside out backhand a very little used shot.

  • venus and li na hae the best back-hands

  • WoW!

    So classic

  • Seles, Jankovic, Sharapova and Hingis

  • are you sick of 2hbh?

  • Sharapova clearly has the best backhand on the tour, followed closely by Azarenka and Jankovic. Sharapova is left handed, enough said. That backhand is epic to say the least.

  • Bleh 0:52 steroids

  • sharapova~!

  • clijsters has a better backhand than kuznetsova ivanovic safina jancovic dementieva atleast

  • @8876abhinav I agree, mostly. Clijsters backhand is way beyond Ivanovic, Dementieva, and Kuznetsova. But I think Clijsters, Jankovic, and Safina are pretty close. But on the run, Jankovic has the edge by far.

  • Capriati had a good two handed backhand too!

  • ew :53

  • Marion Bartoli has a deadly two handed backhand. Also a two handed forehand.

  • Wow......look at Safina.....great Muscles!

  • Venus hit two of the nest nackhands down the line passing shots i have ever seen in her dubai final 2010....simply amazing!!!!! check them out their on youtube

  • @zmazmal I saw them! They were incredible

  • 0:54 wtf...

  • In my opinion...hingis,venus,li na,sharapova, myskina, evert, sanchez vicario, jankovic and ..of course, seles got the best two handed backhands in the last 20 years

  • @sharliex

I agree except for Vicario, her backhand was not really a weapon as the above, however it was extremely consistent. I would certainly put Davenport on this list, the angles she creates with her reach and how sweetly she times her strokes was just phenomenal.

  • i also liked Anna Kournikova's backhand

  • jankovic, hingis, dokic are the best in two handed backhands

  • the seles angles and pace were insane :) monica really created modern tennis

  • Sharapova, Jankovic and Dokic are the best BH in womens tennis. ;)

  • Jeez! You're so right... The one at 5:27 is unbelievable. Venus is Elastic Woman!!!

  • lol safinas picture made me laugh... xD

  • Sharapova's backhand is by FAR the biggest in women's game, Venus is not very far behind/

  • look at safina...she is very strong...54 sec

  • sharapova had the best backhand cause she used to be ;left handed then changed to right so she uses her left hand for angles and power on her back hand. it's also a good striek

  • my backhand is the same way. my dominat hand is left but i play right so i use the left for power and the right gives me my angles.

  • That was soo sweet!

  • The one at 5:27 is sick

  • Venus's BH is the best with Sharapova and Jankovic behind. Serena's FH is the best on tour IMHO

  • Its out of Serena & Venus inmy opinion.

  • 0:56

  • If only backhands are to be compared.. then the UNDERRATED DAVENPORT has the BEST backhand of all !

Her backhand was so clean ... even her forehand for htat matter.. its a fact that if she had even 80 per cent of the mobility of the williams sisters... she would be a better player than both of them.. she lost to them more because the williams sisters knew how to use davenports groundstroke power and counterattack it to make her move around.. and thats why she lost more !

  • Davenport actually won the H2H with Venus 14-13, but lost to Venus in 3 slam finals. :( Serena was just a bad matchup for her.

In terms of pure skill Davenport was definitely on par with the Williams'.

  • I think Lindsay is the best ball striker ever on the WTA tour

  • i think jelena dokic is there with lindsay they both have great clean hard hitting tennis

  • @hajime2k Having a better H2H agains Venus isn't anything special bc a lot of women do, even women who are not that great. I used to love Venus, but she hasn't been anything special in the last 8 years. Venus actually sucks.

  • @samaybrahmin

I agree that Davenport's backhand was technically perfect. But mobility wasn't the the cause of her woes. Davenport had some sort of focus problem, where she would lose focus at crucial stages of a match. This happened to her all the time, not just against the Williams sisters.

  • @Li4oaf

Right. Davenport had mental problems. I remember the finals of Australian Open 2005. She couldn't stay focused after a perfect 1st set an so Serena destroyed her and shattered her dreams.

  • @samaybrahmin

Maybe you're right. But the Williams-Sisters, especially Serena are/is a much better and much more successful Player. Things like "its a fact that if she had even 80 per cent of the mobility of the williams sisters... she would be a better player than both of them..." doesn't count. If Serena has a hand-eye coordination like Henin or Hingis, she would be the greatest player ever. But she hasn't. If Seles wouldn't be attacked, she might have 25 Slams by now. Who knows.....!?

  • @samaybrahmin Davenport has a winning record over Venus. But in major finals the Williams sisters were just mentally tougher. Davenport's backhand was definetely one of the best all time though. But I'm surprised Maria Sharapova isn't mentioned, she also has one of the best 2hbh ever and it's superior to Evert, Pierce, Kuznetsova, Dementieva, Safina, Jankovic and Ivanovic. Her's is nearly on par with Davenport, Seles and the Williams sisters. Hingis had a cleaner (but less powerful) backhand.

  • @samaybrahmin She really didn't lose that much more, they just beat her at the slams more. She won more of the smaller tourneys against them...the ones no one remembers.

  • @samaybrahmin

I agree Davenport's backhand was simply fantastic, I can't truly decide between hers Hingis' or Venus'. Hingis' was superior in terms of variety and consistency at her best, Venus had the flashier of the three and anything slightly short would be pummeled from her backhand side, that down the line backhand of Venus was murderous between 99-2003. Davenport similarly to Venus was so devastating.

  • @luirot9

Serena has the most punishing backhand return after Seles, purely menacing, but I find hers a bit ordinary on its own merits. Myskina would be my special mention after my top three. Sharapova would be next in line.

  • such an ugly shot

  • 4:00 Henin was tired from a super 2007 year

so badly that she retired :(

  • Clijsters her backhand was not bad

    But ivanovic o_O

sorry after winning RG 2008 she never played good Ö

    her forehand ,her weapon doesn't

    helps her these days

  • what's the song??

  • "Clubbed to Death" by Rob Dougan

  • Where's Marion Bartoli?

  • martina is the best ever!!luv u martina

  • ...I don't agree with someof the player's you choose. Ivanovic, Dementieva and Kuznetsova have forehands that are much better than there backhands, and their games (most notably Ivanovic's) are influenced by that shot. Serena has a decent backhand...however, her forehand is a little bit bigger (although a little more inconsistent)

  • Serena has a damn good backhand and I've watched her butcher many of my favorites with it this decade. Venus puts more pride on her backhand, but if I had kids I'd have them try to emulate Serena's rather than Venus'.

Sveta and Lena often use their backhand to setup the forehand or win the point when pressed. Ana's backhand and slice have vastly improved and has more variety off the backhand side now. They are sometimes headcases.

I opted not to rank backhands nor classify best. =)

  • There's more to women's tennis than the Williams sisters. Serena's stretches of dominance don't usually last long and given their penchant for off-court distractions they won't be at the very top much longer.

I'd like to see someone step up and take the torch as being the best now. Safina has a lot to prove. My guess is after this year someone among Azarenka/Wozniacki/Radwanska/Cornet/Zvonareva/Ivanovic (maybe Safina) will really assert herself as a force to reckon with.

  • Hingis's is bar far the best

  • There's more to life than just the green ball! The World is so big! Am so glad Serena and Venus both know that they do ot have a one track mind! AS for Hingis, she has no power to live with 2day's game...Even Azarenka can blow Hingis' cocaine ass off the court! The best is Serena wiht 11 slams and then Venus

  • wtf is going on with safina??!!

  • HOLY SHIT 0:54 = STEROIDS LOL jk

  • i'm sorry but Ivanovic's BH is 2nd rate at best.... now her FH is another story!

  • What about Marion Bartoli's :O

  • Bartoli has been too erratic since the end of '07. Besides, nobody I know from tennis sites talk about her backhand. Usually it's about her conditioning (or lack of). She has to show me her Wimby '07 run was no fluke. Admittedly I've only seen a few matches of hers, but was not that impressed with her play. Good thing she finally won a title this year to end that 2+ year drought.

Since it will be months before I'll work on another vid, maybe she can redeem herself. ;)

  • Fair enough. She played amazingly at the Australian Open this year, taking out Jankovic with ease and yes, beat Li Na to win a long awaited title.

  • Let's face it Chris Evert's Two-Hander is the template for the modern game. Backswing to Follow-Through. The Prettiest Two-Hander ever!!!

  • I think Venus and Sharapova have the best two handers right now.

  • Hingis' backhand has it allconsistency, power, and purpose.

  • 0.53 Ö safina has male arms

  • Safina has tons of power, but doesn't play smart. She also can be timid, defensive, scared, and self-defeating. I had the horror of watching a live stream of her meltdown vs Azarenka at Indian Wells.

Azarenka has a better overall game than Safina at this point, including the backhand. Zvonareva has really done a great job improving her game as well. When I get around to a 2nd vid those two, Li, Clijsters, Capriati, and a few others will be included.

  • I love Hingis' Li Na's, Hantuchova's and Myskina's

  • my favs are monica;s and serena&venus

  • Thank you I really enjoyed your video. My favorites are Venus' and Martina's. No doubt they are all good.

  • pierce its the best

  • Nicely said hajime2k - though it's easy for me to agree with you since I do like the sisters (especially Venus.)

Venus' open-stance backhand is my favourite 2 handed backhand. She often hits it BETTER when she is stretched out wide for some reason. And as you noted it is instrumental in her ability to turn defense into offense, and hit a winner off someone else's winner. (See: Justine)

The best one-handed backhand I've ever seen is Guga's.

  • I love two handed backhands but my girl Justine has the best one-hander everrrrrr.

    :D

  • Steffi's slice was better though :)

  • wow, safina has more muscles than me

  • wtf!!! omg... safina????

  • She's toned her body down somewhat the past year. If you look hard enough, you'll find unflattering photos of Sharapova hitting backhands as well.

  • OMG safina @ 0.51 haha bodybuilder

  • Love this.. thanks for posting.

  • El de Martina Hingis es el mejor.

  • I'm sorry but Ivanovic's backhand is not nearly on the level of the others... now her forehand is a different story. When it's on, it rival's Steffi's IMHO. BTW Venus has the best BH, haha!

  • Jankovic's backhand is the best with Serena, Venus, Chakvetadze has a good backhand too!!

I think Dementieva, Sharapova, Ivanovic have a good backhand but not better than their forehand

  • Even Sharapova said her backhand is her best shot. Her forehand is good, but her reverse forehand finish is probably the main culprit behind her shoulder injuries (that type of forehand takes a toll on the socket). Her backhand is a much more natural, effective, reliable shot.

  • If I get around to it, I could make another one adding in Zvonareva, Sanchez-Vicario, Clijsters, Capriati, and a few others.

Chakvetadze needs to get it together before I'll add her. She has the skills, but not much for mental strength. At this rate, Azarenka, Wozniacki, or even Radwanska have better odds of me putting them in a vid than her. And that's even though Chakvetadze is the loveliest of the current WTA girls in my book.

  • venus s deefo the best backhand and for the winner of this video venuses first one was sooooooooooooooooo good

  • That was a heck of a winner by Venus. I couldn't believe Henin could hit the perfect forehand, yet Venus somehow got to the ball and struck an even better shot.

I still scratch my head looking at how close she hits the backhand to her body. That and her hitting it in open stance. But when it comes to making the big shots, her backhand is just about as good as it gets.

  • I'd say that at their best, Venus followed by Serena have the 2 best double handed backhands in the woman's game. When hit right, they are unplayable.

  • Venus and Serena have arguably the best backhands when you factor their ability to go from defense to offense. Serena gets great angles and spin while Venus the flat, low-trajectory when they're in a pinch. IMO their ability to mix offense and defense from the backhand is a major reason they have been able to stay on top even at ages 28 and 27.

I'm NOT a Williams fan (Venus is more likable than Serena), but I would put their backhands in the top 5 easily. Glad I'm not doing any rankings. :)

  • Chris Evert's backhand was amazing

I'm surprised Sharapova's isn't there, her backhand is "technically perfect"

  • I did add Sharapova's. Her portion comes after Venus' and I got in several clips of her against Henin at AO 2008.

  • oh you did? Haha sorry, I missed it by accident :]

  • I say Davenport has the best double-hander of all time. It is her best shot and probably the least attackable of all the others shown.

btw, Ivanovic's backhand is nowhere near equal to her forehand. It's more of a weakness than a strength. Ana is my favourite player, but there is nothing beautiful about her backhand IMO. ASV and Capriati would fit well in this video though.

  • cool

  • Venus has the best =]

  • I Agree 100%!!!

  • Serena and Venus are the best!

  • I agree with you!!

  • Jankovic two handed backhand is the best but we can't forget one of the best ever one handed backhand from JUSTINE ! ! !

  • Are u Kidding me Sharapova isn't included she has way better Backhand Than Ana Ivanovic...And many others cmon!!

  • Did you read my added messages? Sharapova IS in it, but the intro pic did not show up. Her portion comes after Venus.

  • Clijsters>Jankovic>Dementieva

    Kim should be here!

  • I was never much of a Clijsters fan. She just always found new ways to disappoint and burned out by 23.

I couldn't fit in Capriati (3 slams and Olympic gold), Hantuchova (nice backhand), Sanchez-Vicario (4 slams and #1 in both singles and doubles), Myskina (first Russian woman to win a slam), or Austin (2 slams, ended Evert's 125 win streak on clay) either. Maybe I can do a sequel if I have time.

  • I think that Clijsters didn't have such a great backhand, her better site was forehand

  • Venus' and Serena's backhands are best by a mile. They are so accurate and they can hit it so accurately on the run and on defense. They have such great angles on backhand

  • hingis always had best backhand.. its so accurate, and is hit really hard compared to the rest of her game

  • Lol the sharapova's is the only visible one. Thereby is Ivanovic a much better player

  • The Sharapova's Backhand is the best..

  • marias backhand is the best ever

  • My video has the top 8 women on tour in it (Sept. 22 2008 rankings). Except for Dementieva, the rest of the top 8 have backhands as good as or even better than their forehands.

  • Also Ivanovic and maybe Kuznetsova have forehands better than backhands

  • are you joking?

Ivanovic's forehand is MILES MILES MILES better than her backhand!

Seriously, are you taking the piss?

You must know nothing about Ana if you think her backhand is stronger :S

  • I never said Ivanovic's backhand was better than her forehand. In my opinion it's quite good and relatively steady. The backhand has improved along with her court movement over the past year.

Kuznetsova's trademark shot is her forehand, but even then she has one of the better backands on the tour. That's considering she trained in Spain and their style of training revolves around hard-hitting forehands and minimal use of backhand (i.e. Moya, Nadal, Ferrer, Ferrero, Lopez).

  • What??? Nadal is all about backhand, all the world says that...

he's lefthanded and because of his good backhand he is crushing the world out

  • Nadal has a great backhand. He's on my other video, in fact. BUT, the guy does run around the backhand side quite a bit as his topspin forehand is his MO. His best backhands are when he's stretched out wide or on the run.

  • and yes you did. Can't you even read what you said.

    I quote:

"Except for Dementieva, the rest of the top 8 have backhands as good as or even better than their forehands. "

The backhand has improved, but it is still weak, especially for a former #1 player in the world and Roland Garros champion.

  • I said as good as OR better. The key word being OR. Seeing how Ana performed at the YEC in Doha, her forehand fell apart as well as her nerves. She just wanted to go home after those two losses and did just that.

  • Also, I don't understand how you can say Kuzzie's forehand is her trademark shot and then say her backhand is just as good if not better... it's completely contradictory. Kuznetsova, quite like Ana, would not be much of a player if her forehand was as strong as her backhand...

  • You can have a side that gets you more points, yet can be just as proficient from the other wing. Nadal's forehand is his trademark stroke, but actually his backhand is less prone to errors and he's more versatile off that side.

Kuzy crushes forehands for winners but also makes more errors off that side. Yet typically hits precision strokes off the backhand in both open and closed stance for winners. Forehand gets raves, but her solid backhand allows her to play aggressively.

    Chill out!

  • actually, you musnt know anything about ana either

in like the last maybe 6 months anas forehand has been absolutely pathetic (and im a FAN of ana)

her backhand is much more solid

  • so am i, douchebag.

Ana's everything has been pathetic in the last 6 months, since the French Open to be honest. Especially the forehand, yes. But her forehand is STILL her MAJOR weapon. Without her forehand she wouldn't be a top 20 player.

Whether Ana is in a slump - and the forehand making many unforced errors - is irrelevant, her forehand is still much, much better and you'd be a fool to state otherwise.

  • the best backhand is Jankovic's she can do anything of it, down line, cross court, volley, topspin, flat, topspin lob, add power, drop shots, shame her forehand is not as adaptable. best player on tour go JJ

  • very nice ! i enjoyed watching it! :)

  • Sharapova has the greates Backhand for my Opinion:D:D

  • lol dinara safina is so manly

  • She's toned her body quite a bit over the past year. She has a cute side to her, that is when she not furious as hell. ;)

  • That's what I would say unless I had seen her in person, she actually looks very feminine!

  • Hingis has the most picturesque 2HB around... not just on the basis of this vid... such a fluent motion even when she was in an awkward position of the court.

  • I love Hingis' backhand!!!

  • FYI:

Maria Sharapova's clips occur after Venus' and before Jankovic's. For whatever reason Sharapova's first pic did not show up in the beginning of the film. Minor gaffe, but I think the movie turned out okay. :)

  • Nice clip. Seles was a beast back in the early 90's, she could put that backhand anywhere.

By the way...what is the music??

  • Thanks.

There's two tunes I used for this. The credits are at the end. For your convenience:

    1. Are You Alive - Richard Gibbs (Battlestar Galactica mini-series)

    2. Clubbed to Death - Rob Dougan (The Matrix)

  • Finally I made a two-handed backhand video of the ladies. This was even more complex to put together than the one I did of the men's. Hope you like it. :)
