@monkeymangonewild Find me an L lens with isimilar range and mage stabilization and F2.8 at anything less than double its price. Fact is that an L lens is not WAY better and its considerably more expensive if you try and match the specs of this lens.
If you have a 7D/T2i/60D this is hands down the best all purpose lens you can get for it. Great focal length, very versatile, IS works great, and it's one of the sharpest zooms I've ever used (sharper than 24-70/16-35 for sure) and almost as sharp as the 70-200 f/2.8 IS.
@masticina You could argue that you shouldn't get the 85L II since the 85 1.8 is only 1 less stop, but that doesn't mean that the 85L isn't better. The Canon 17-55 is crushing the Tamron in terms of image quality. Not saying that the Tamron is a bad choice if that's what your budget calls for, but you get what you pay for.
@4rtic3 The 17-55 might as well be an L lens, the only reason it's not is bc it's an EF-S lens. It's sharper than the 24-70 for sure. I have the 14L II, 35L, 50L, 85L II, and 135L and I still think very highly of this lens. If I had a 7D or T2i I'd have one for sure.
@kickople990 why do you want to compare two lenses from two different manufacturers which can't be used in the same body? at least with Sigma or Tamron
When I first went digital in 2003, I figured soon all dslr's would be full-frame. So I didn't want to buy any efs lenses, because I thought I'd soon have a full frame camera at a reasonable price. Well now it's 2011, and full frames are still out of my price range and I needed a new body so I bought a 60d. I guess I'll take the plunge and give up on my full frame dreams. Sigh.
First of all, non of the test shots here show what it can do. Make some photos offcamera when you can make an effort. Secondly, if you have a 2.8 lens, make some test shots on 2.8! Thirdly, for a crop-body this is the sharpest lens available. Maybe in a perfect world we all have fullframe 5D's, but irl we do not. O, and do not let Alamby shoot the test photos.
@popcisalocker Yes, Depends who/where you learn the language from I guess!
Or she may of lived there for a while.
I recently went to Sweden, a lot of them speak English with an American accent, same goes for some Eastern Europeans that we had at work. Some others, like German footballer like Dietmar Hamann speak English with a German/Scouse(Liverpool)/Geordie(Newcastle) accent because that's where they have lived, they pick up the pronunciation from locals.
Oh, and i wanted to say something else: at 1:47, you have the only fast ef-s lens there is, and at what settings do you shoot? ISO 800! Why u no use 2.8!
Id rather spend the lil extra money on the 24-70L 2.8 instead and if i want to upgrade ill be able to use that and if not ever upgrading id rather still have the L boss
@jambandz Only other option with Image Stabilization is the Sigma, which is ~$700 and softer in the corners. The Tamron VC is a joke. The Non VC version is almost as sharp as the Canon, but focuses slow and doesn't have image stabilization.
I have the 17-55 and was wondering why the focusing wasn't smooth. After going out to 50 and then zooming in, right when you get to about 28 the lens gets noticeably more difficult to zoom in. I bought it new but it's been this way ouf of the box. Not sure if I have a lemon.
Also could you do a review on the new Sigma 50-150 OS?
@alwagp I also just got my 17-55 this month. It too does the same thing you talk about. I would assume it has to do with suction, or pressure building up in the lens. It is known for sucking a lot of dust, although a month in, mine has none at all. It just isn't built like an 'L." That's all. It makes it tough when filming movies while zooming though.
Sorry - horsemanning is crap - try photoshop if you want to switch heads, good review of the lens (well over due) - she is soooo bored of him and he can't see it. Lok - mate be on stand by!
Apart from the very nice speed of the lens at f/2.8 with I.S., I'd rather go for the 17-40L which of course can also be used on full frame Canon DSLRs.
I had a lot of fun using the Canon 16-35 2.8 L on a crop sensor. If you buy the Mark I version it works great, the build quality is wonderful, and can pick it up for about £700 2nd hand. Then if you decide to upgrade you'll have an excellent wide-angle zoom.
@bgosai123 I have it. It's sharp as f*ck and 15mm on APS-C is a dream come true. But you won't get enough bokeh as it closes down to f4 at 18mm and you will have to buy the 17-55 f 2.8 after all.

@viniciusvardiero but you loose a full stop of brightness, and will have a very hard time in close quarters due to the 24mm minimum focal length (38mm equivalent for full frame)
way to go not even mentioning that it has image stabilization

Oh I am not going to say that this lens won't find a good home with the Pro's .
Just saying that the price is.. pushing those with less money they are willing to put into it to others like Tamron and Sigma..
Not a bad thing. I do get it .. good quality, weathersealing, super fine focus etc.. worth money. Many are happy with less.
