It put the 'dystopia' theme on the map, putting ideas of a society such as the one depicted in this commercial into the minds of many. The idea was that by 1984, 'big brother' (govt.) would have total control over you and everybody else. The phrase 'big brother is watching' came from that book. This commercial tried to play off the huge - albeit outdated - success of that book, and the continuaing idea.

It was advertising a feeling, something that they still do today (ex. the "I'm a Mac and I'm a PC" ad portrayed Mac users as young and cool). This ad was revolutionary. Read Steve Job's biography.
