the longest rally ever was one of 643 times over the net between Vicky Nelson and Jean Hepner at Richmond, VA in October 1984. the match lasted 6 hr 22 minutes and was won by Nelson 6-4, 7-6. It concluded with a 1 hr 47 min tiebreak, 13-11, for which one point took 29 minutes.
thanks to the latest invention of racket technologies designed to control and hit powerful shots..no wonder today's players hardly play long rallies.....except i9n the French Open.....
It's just not that entertaining of a rally. Neither player is being very aggressive. I know that this is the French but come on, show some energy, show some life. Both players seem fairly indifferent to the process.
The longest women's match occurred between Vicki Nelson-Dunbar and Jean Hepner in 1984 lasting 6 hours and 31 minutes with Nelson-Dunbar winning 6-4, 7-6 (11). One point lasted 643 strokes and 29 minutes.[5]
@LyricalWax haha i commented on the wrong video, i had both on at the same time i think, i meant to comment on the nelson-dunbar vs hepnar match that had a rally of over 28 minutes lol, my bad :D
The reason the rallies are slower in the early 80's is because the improved racket technology today allows Nadal to hit so much harder. Give Nadal the same racket Wilander had in this match and I'm betting Nadal's game would look far different. I often wonder if Sampras and Agassi would have been as successful with their powerful hitting games if they had used the rackets of the mid 80's.
Yes Sampras' racket was from the late eighties, certainly not the era where this footage was taken though. Agassi started out with a Prince from the late eighties too which allowed him to hit the ball incredibly hard. While not attempting to discredit the wonderful talent and record of either Sampras or Agassi, they earmarked the assension of the power player due to racket technology which ended the emergence of touch or cerebral type players (the Wilanders, Edbergs, Mecirs, McEnroes).
Don't agree. Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg both played with the power players of Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl and beat them. They won their titles during that power period of Tennis.
Mats didnt beat sampras when pete was the pistol, he beat him in 1990 in sydney, almost 1 year before the uso victory. Edberg, he beat pete alot when pete was still developing too, but he was still a great player and pushed pete when pete first got near the top and even when pete was number 1
yeah and i am wondering would federer be as successful. Give those boots, those fast surfaces, rackets, medical advancements and players like roddick and hewitt to Laver, Borg, Mcenroe, connors, lendl, tilden, and countless others and then they ll show you whats tennis.
See thats the problem. tennis has changed so much unlike any other sport that u cant compare players. I laugh at ppl who say fed is the best ever, or samp or laver is the best ever. Cuz u can compare cuz of all the variables.
Not only hit harder but with more wrist action and thus greater racquet speed. Now, this doesn't mean that guys couldn't generate as much racquet speed 25 years ago as they do today - rather, if they hit then as they hit now (with the technology they were accustomed to) the ball wouldn't land in fair territory.
even a nadal-ferrer is better to watch ! ! !

@xXmichael4Xx surely at one point they decided to keep going to make a record? There's no way they were competitively playing for 643 shots.

Theres no fucking way that was 28 minutes long, even on fast foward.

Don't know about Agassi, but Sampras used an eighties racket. The Wilson Prostaff 6.0 that he used wasn't very easy to use, and was quite heavy.
