  • Poor Italy. She seem to have nothing but bad luck.

  • Thank you for letting the world know that the Italians made some very fine ships. I build ships out of toothpicks. Big ones. I am starting to build German, French and hopefully Itanian liners. Thanks for these great photos and inspirations. Also, Rome ROCKS!!!!! I enjoyed short stay there!

  • Great compilation of very fine vessels, shame they came to such sad ends. A very nice tribute indeed.

  • The Rex was very beautiful and sleek, but why no photos of the Conte Di Savoia? Just as beautiful, and as unfortunate: another casualty of the war.

  • Conte di Savoia was not a war casualty. only lightly damaged, was scrapped postwar

  • Italian liners have a habit of flipping over when sinking i always loved Italian liners

  • thanks

  • what was that song?

  • I'd rather be the girl in your arms

    Jean Goldkette Orchestra 1924

    Bix Beiderbecke cornet

  • Heartbreaking to see such wonderful ships meet tragic ends. Also the Conte di Savioa, one of my favorite per-war Italian liners (too many beauties to choose from). So glad to see someone recognizing these ships on Youtube.

  • The Rex ,Andrea Doria and Conte Di Savioa are the most beautiful (man made) objects I've ever seen. The Principessa Mafalda's namesake,a very admirable Italian royal, suffered a horrific end herself in Buchenwald.

  • Beautiful ships, yes! Also appreciate the period music with this video instead of incongruous rock tunes.

  • Its strange that, both the Neptunia and Oceania were sunk at the same spot,on the same day,and that they were sister ships!!!Its horrifiying though that 2500 people were lost in total on both of them when they sunk.

  • well, during the north africa war thousand of soldiers were sent on the "death route" between Naples and Tunis.

more ships were lost there, like "Conte Rosso" and "Victoria"

My granddad, serving on a cargo ship, lost his life there as well

  • my grandad served on hms penelope and force k they devestated italian and german shipping in world war 2 like the m/v adriatico, alvise da mosto the maria and sagitta also rina corrado the hms penelope was sunk of the coast of anzio 18 february 1944 with a loss of 415 men

  • well,my granddad lost his life at Bizerte on dec 14th 1942 on board mv Monginevro, meanwhile my dad survived the torpedoing of ss Beppe Croce. Peace, now. no more wars

  • i was just saying at that time it was a sitiuation that none of the men aboard any of these ships wanted to see what they seen and went through but at that time it had to be done but now you should remember them proudly

  • Yes friend.

you want to know more on those ships you mentioned? i think i have all the infos and many pics.write me separately

  • Annanoli, great vid! Such a shame only the QM still exists today, and hardly in her original form. We missed out on a great era.

However, at least these wonderful ships will be all the more remembered for meeting untimely ends! Who really remembers the Olympic, the two Mauretanias and all the other great ships of their age who simply outran their useful lives. These Italian liners are now immortalised!

ps What is the name of the song? I've searched fruitlessley through his catalogue...

  • I'd rather be the girl in your arms.

the orchestra is Jean Goldkette, the cornet is Bix Beiderbecke.

    Shame for the nice ships,eh?

  • Thank you!

And yes, shame indeed - but like I said, they have a more glorious place in the history books now than those who were simply scrapped.

  • kay. did my best. i'll try it again

  • your a gentleman Annanoli I'm a jerk sometimes

lots of time, and effort went into the making both the video and music. Kindly delete my previous comment.

    thanks

  • rex is sink in slovenia.

    koper bay.

  • look at Duilio, half submerged. When she was torpedoed and her captain saw there's was no chance to save the ship, he brought her on a sandbank, saving the lives of almost all on board. Do you know that man was Piero Calamai, the Andrea Doria's captain? Great man and hero, RIP.

  • Sadly Capt. Calamai was held the only guilty for the loss of Andrea Doria.USCG many years later found that the error was somewhere else.

But too late. They wrecked a man.A great man indeed.

  • My library has framed money from the Andrea Doria shipwreck, and yes Piero Calamai, RIP, as well as Captain Edward J. Smith, RIP

  • Yes, sory, it was italian. Normandie was french....

  • But l think Rex was also not ltalian ship. Doesnt it was french???

  • No, sir. It was Italy pride, winner of blue ribbon 1933. see the tri-colour band on the funnel?

  • Yes, Lusitania was Cunard line ship that belongs to Britain.

  • Oh,the musik is Bix beiderbecke 1924,but Lusitania is not a Italian ship...

  • Neat having the 1920s era ( I think) accompanying music. I'm surprised that you didn't include the Lusitania
