Absolutely beautiful, I've always loved this song, but wow this is much better!!!!!! What a wonderful talent. Thank you for sharing this with us. This is real music with real talent!!!!
I have never heard of him being underrated. Just the opposite. He is well liked. Well known. The two dislikes is becoming par for the course. Just so many mean spirited people running around. As far as an artist selling more today? There are 7 billion people on the planet now, compared to 3 billion then. Plus all the outlets. However I do not have to dislike Britney Spears to like Rick. I try and find something to like about everyone, instead of looking to show how clever I am disliking something
I do not remember ever underestimating Rick Wakeman... As a matter of fact, we worshipped him in the 70s as an Art Rock God. His work with Yes was never overlooked.
Rick Wakeman was the original keyboardist with the Strawbs, and created some great backing. Was a keyboard hero to me for his Strawbs work. Now makes me laugh as a 'grumpy old man' on TV.
After all these years, I had no idea that it was Rick Wakeman who arranged and played this for Cat Stevens. He's a phenomenal player, and he blew my mind when I saw him here in Philly. Keyboardist extraordinare, and can outplay ANYONE out there... Sorry Elton John and Billy Joel who were my idols. This guy IS "da bomb!!!!"
I'm surprised no-one's done a karaoke version of this, so if they could sing it and record the vocal they can post it as them duetting with Rick Wakeman on piano!
I heard this song many times in the past and never knew that it is actually music by Rick Wakeman and not Cat Stevens unitl I watched this video... simply inspiring, thanks for sharing...
...you should read what wakeman has to say about the recording of 'morning has broken' on wikipedia its pretty funny ... i was a teenager when this song came out an a yes fan so had heard the rumors that it was wakeman playing the piano but he was never credited with it ! enjoy :)

Just come back from watching him in concert. Been a fan since primary school and now over 40 and still ever impressed by his skill and talent. One man show on a piano and with your eyes closed at times you could have imagined suporting musicians there, How can someone get such a rich breadth of sound out of one instrument. Played this one tonight and it just sounded fantastic. Even did Merlin unplugged which was incredible.
There is no sheet music to this piece because Rick did it for £9 as sessional musician and he didn't get paid or any recognition at the time. Very few realise he actually played it. Nobody expected it to become so big and Cat Stevens took all the credit. His name isn't even on the original score so he kept the arrangment to himself at the time. I 'm sure this has been recitified since but the original arrangement is only in his head and always will be
Oh, this is so lovely!!! Thank you for posting!!! I am a forever fan -- since Journey to the Center of the Earth, Six Wives of H VIII -- all the Yes songs. This is so rich!!!
Saw Rick play this when he did a small solo concert nearby a few days ago. What an incredibly talented man he is, yet he stayed around after the concert and signed our programmes, CD's etc and had a chat.
Does anybody know where I can get the sheet music of this brillant piano composition? I know that Rick says on his website that there is no sheet music in print for any of his works. But do all pianists play that tune by ear?
There is none, I saw him do a live show and wondered the same thing but he said he has never told anyone the arrangement and people have tried to work it out but be unsuccessful.
Absolutely brilliantly fantastic. I only found out today, after all these years, that Rick Wakeman was the pianist on this. I've loved is so much since it was in the charts, often wondered who the pianist was, just imagined it was an anonymous session musician.
All those who didn't know are making me proud to have figured it out years ago, just by listening. Wakeman has some very favored trills, runs and flourishes that tend to be recognizable. I became aware of Wakeman at 9 y.o. As of now, at 47, he's still my fave and I've had the pleasure of speaking with him on several occasions.
E.g. Britney Spears may have sold more records, but it does not make her a better singer / musician in any way. She just sells better. More bottles of coke is sold than Dom Perignon.
This song is a classic in the Christian realm, he probably wouldn't mind the love from people, but I know he can take it or leave it, because he plays his music unto the Lord, and he is not depending on peoples applause but Gods...
I never knew this either. No credit is given to Wakeman on the album credits either. I really hope this was an innocent ommission. for years I thought this was Cat Stevens doing the playing.
The tune of the song is actually an old Gaelic Melody and Rick's interlude comes from one of his albums - the one he was working on at the same time as Cat was recoding this in the same studios. 10 points if you can identify it... :o)
The song Rick was playing is 'Catherine Howard', heard on his Six Wives of Henry VIII album. I have this LP. (you can watch him playing Catherine Howard, here on YT).
like this even better then kat steavens

@tomtomnj the beginning piano and middle parts were written by Wakeman. The song itself is actually a hymn going back several centuries ago.

I don't think he's underrated.
His music is beautiful but sometimes complex.
It's simply not 'maintstream', not for everyone.
