  • By today's standards: "Oh, then he fucked her brains out."

  • Sang this in college and thought what you thought, tchiu. But now that I'm older, I think it's even less innocent than your explanation. I don't think the reference is to the lady herself, much less than something a lady possesses that the gentleman had a difficult time finding ("up and down he wandered"), but when he found "her"...then they fell a-kissing, a-kissing and then they fell a-kissing. Just trying to be clinical in this analysis without getting too graphic.

  • Did anyone know that this video is about sex? Most unsacred Renaissance music was. Phyllis was a sheppard and the man who found her was kissing her. After the kissing they were going up and down, up and dwn, up and down. That is actually meant to mean that they were having sex. During the Renaissance, the unsacred musioc contained hidden sexual inuendos quite often. They were subtle enough so that the church would not notice them. Let me know what you guys think :)

  • @tchiu654321 apparently mentions to the color green, the grass and all things related to being outside, playing games, etc, means having sex :) Apparently. I am most puzzled about the villancico "si abra en este baldres" I had read about its meaning once, online, but I cant seem to find any other explanations that support the theory about what was going to be made with the piece of fabric they are talking about :S

  • Times havent changed much atall.

  • We sang this back when I was in High School. It's a very fun song to sing in a group.

  • Wow this song is pretty graphic (for 1599)!

  • beautiful, too bad the group would have a "gay" connotation from todays generation. its just music!

  • @MsYourMotherFather

Although some of their voices are quite high they are not gay. The ability to sing that high is a very beautiful gift when put into harmony like it is done with this group. The King's Singers are one of the best all male acapella groups in the world. They have a proud and prestigious history in both England and the U.S.A.

  • @ScottishgirlAnnlorie Some of these men were, as a matter of fact, gay. Your defence of their honour (irony!) was a poor one. I wonder what 'prestige' has to do with being attracted to your own sex or the other or both to varying degrees. Would you care to explain?

  • Im so high right now. This shit is nuts.

  • Richard Simmons would call this gay....this is off the charts for gayness.

  • @Cliffs0fDover And your comment is just another typical remark reminiscent of society. "...off the charts for gayness", no. It's called music. Historical music, from which most of today's music is based off of.

I'm gay, my boyfriend is gay, and I have several other gay friends... none of which including myself, and I sang for several years, can hit the high pitches.

Also, this song is about a woman having sex with a man. How is that gay?

  • @TheStarWarsGuru You mad bro?

  • @Cliffs0fDover Nah. Just having fun pointing out the ignorance of a someone who I'm assuming is an overweight, white, virgin who lives in his mothers basement trolling on youtube.

    I just love stupid people.

You mad bro? I'm sure you're mad.

  • @TheStarWarsGuru Lol you're so mad.... Rage more please?

  • @ThePCGamerFussell No, I guess he is just sick of ignorant arseholes saying perfectly stupid things on the internet and feeling really satisfied with themselves for their intellectual prowess. While all people, incluiding ignorant arseholes, are worth of respect and appreciation, it really sometimes can become too much. So I understand TheStarWarsGuru... with all my heart :-)

  • @amatorynumber Everyone should be able to voice their opinion freely, no matter how ignorant or unintellectual it may be, without being insulted by somebody who feels superior over them. We were all born and we will all die, we are all equal. He may be richer or better looking than the person who he insulted, but he is still a human being with faults just like the rest of us. It gives him no right to so ignorantly put down another person just because he wants his e-peen flexed.

  • @ThePCGamerFussell Allow myself to sound pedantic if I quote myself: 'all peope, including ignorant arseholes, are worth of respect and appreciation'. Having gotten that out of the way, I will add that some opinions are worth eradicating, as it surely will happen, such as irrational homophobia (which was the case here and I falter when applying to it the term 'opinion'). If we didn't feel (at least emotionally) superior to the homophobes, they will forever pass down the meme of idiocy. Peace!

  • @ThePCGamerFussell Oh, sorry, I forgot to add that only INFORMED opinions should be taken into consideration. I somehow didn't consider that one of them. Non-informed opinions are called PREJUDICE and should be eradicated from the face of the Earth, slowly but surely, without demeaning their holders but without any hesitation in doing so. A cultural discussion may ensue from this on what constitutes prejudice for a given society, I grant, but please let us leave it here or we'll never end :-)

  • fantastic performance of this beautiful madrigal.

  • love this song! my choir sang it recently for a concert. the king singers are truly the best group in the world.

  • The King's Singers are a strange group of singers, they are all past there 40's and some of them have the vocal range of a 10 year old, amazing piece though

  • Who the heck disliked this video?

  • @billyjoet99 from what I have been hearing, its a couple Justin Bieber fans haha

  • DIVINO

  • dude on the left looks like mr bean

  • I love this so much :)

  • now that is just brilliant..

  • Convincing mincing.

  • This clip begins with the ending of "The Silver Swan," which I can't seem to find here. I would love to see a video of that song. Theirs is the best rendition of this piece I've ever heard.

  • doo blontond rre

  • Enjoy this a lot. There's always members of the group who get into those insane faces.

  • great!!!

  • "Are you being served" is a study in double entendre. Mr Humphreys "I'm free" is another. It is said that British comics were fond of double entendre because the code of strict censorship prevented the slightest mention of sex. Max Miller for example, got away with a joke which ran "I was on a narrow cliff path and a beautiful girl came towards me. I didn't know whether to block her passage or toss myself off"

  • style council is still a good look. i'm gonna buy some loafers.

  • Tulio Rules!

  • Very merry tune. I wonder where fair Phyllis went when gone though?

  • Up and down, apparently.

  • Can I ask you a question. at 25 seconds, he says something that, well, sounds french to me. I'd spell it if I knew how to but for the sake of wanting to know, i will attempt according to how it sounds to me. LOL!! At 25 seconds he says something like du blantanca. Do you know what that means in english? I have been wanting to know. thank you very much.

  • He says "double entendre" with a prissy french accent. It means "double sense" - which refers to a word or phrase which sounds innocent but can be taken in an ironic or bawdy way, depending on the listener's aditional knowledge. "I've got it in my hand" for example, or "That's a nice pear". British TV comedy would be lost without the double entendre.

  • thank you.

  • Heh..Ms. Slocumbe and the "My Pussy" lines on "Are you Being Served"..

  • Double entendre.

  • of course the bass has a moustache...lol

  • I don't think that's the bass.

  • Oh no, you're right. This is before Stephen joined.

  • I like his blue socks

  • this is the funniest shit ive seen in weeks! pure gold... their eyebrowssssssssssssss haha - the talent though cant go unnoticed though pfffffffffff lol

  • ives. such an awesome singer.

  • Look at that baby duck at the pond at around 25 seconds! Quack o< o< o<

  • perfect

  • bBRILLIANT

    Top Drawer

  • I have had the pleasure of mixing with male and female voices. I must admit the female voice are quite unique in itself and can produce a very high quality sound and very pleasing to here ie. tallis scholars.

  • That top line is so amazing , only a male voice can produce such pure tone of this quality.

  • Beautiful singing. Unfortunate haircuts.

  • lol

  • @kkallebb lol

  • My favorite in the series thus far. I've taught myself all the parts to this song, but it strains me to sing anything but the bass part.

    Still this is fantastic.

  • The opening speaker is brilliantly pompous... love it (and the French is great!)

  • ah, my chamber choir did it last winter. I think our female sopranos sounded better than the countertenor here in terms of tone and whatnot<--not intended to be disparaging in any way

  • No, I know what you mean. The King's Singers don't have the most natural-sounding sopranos. Unless you're hearing Chanticleer, the male soprano sound is usually a little odd.

  • Yes, I completely agree! Chanticleer has incredible male sopranos.

  • My school's Madrigral Choir sang this the past year! Woww [:

We also did Barber of Seville.

    They're amazinggg.

  • Really amazing. Due to these videos I'm now a big fan.

I just noticed the pun in the name: "Madrigal History Tour"... clever. ;D

  • I don't get it!!!!

  • Here's a hint: think "The Beatles".

    It can't be a coincidence. :)

  • magical mystery tour?

  • bingo!

  • Wonderful..... Really nice

  • absolutely awesome! thank you so much for sharing.
