O to be in Munich in 79! This is such a gem! Many thanks for posting. Dame Jones looks stunning. Fassbaender's ability to express SO MUCH facially captivates me every time and Lucia Popp's sound is so pure it makes my heart heavy to think she's no longer with us.
Among so many (including some extraordinary ones), this is absolutely the greatest performance of this amazing aria, probably the most thrilling in the history of opera. Sometimes I think not enough credit was given to Carlos Kleiber in his lifetime. He was one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, but he doesn't seem to have been recognized as such. Not quite. He must have really loved "Der Rosenkavalier," for his two productions of it are musical masterpieces. Quite wonderful.
I am in tears- absolutely beautiful. Just imagine Gwyneth being able to scale down her enormous voice to fit those opening phrases. Fassbender the great Octavian and beloved Lucia Popp at her very best.
I was lucky ennough to see this great performance 3 times in the early 80's. My favourite opera with my all time favourite opera singer Brigitte Fassbaender. I also liked Lucia Popp very much and Gwyneth Jones is at her best in this role. The 1st act scenes in particular between BF and GJ are very sensuous,
Of all the Rosenkavalier final scenes, I think this one is the best. The ladies are all at the top of their form. Popp's voice is straight from Heaven, Fassbaender inhabits Octavian to perfection, and Jones is in exquisite voice in one of her best roles. And Kleiber's conducting is magical.
Great! It's just a shame that the video stops few moments before the real end of the opera, with the black kid picking up the handkerchief from the floor.
How lovely, especially Jones at the beginning. Thank you for making this available. (Does anyone know why it looks like it's being performed in an old factory? Surely not part of the concept??)
That;s the joke. Act I is set in the master bedroom of a fine home belonging to a Field Marshal who is a Nobleman, and Act II in the front reception room of a businessman just elevated to t he Nobility. Act III is supposed to be a "very common place" inappropriate for Baron Ochs, who has to be "rescued" by the Marschallin.
Thank you for your replay. But the question is regarding the 3 act. not the two other once before. And the set for the 3 act is in a cheap place - call it common or not. By the way Baron Ochs is not as elegant and noble as he wanted to be.
But three great singers CAN go wrong with the wrong conductor stirring the broth! Kleiber creates the magical atmosphere that these 3 great women inhabit so spectacularly.
Another magnificent, truly unmatched in my experience, finale.
Of course. Carlos Kleiber was one of the most exciting, yet eccentric, conductors of the last 50 years, Carlos Kleiber, who has died aged 74, led performances of symphonic music and opera that will never be forgotten by those who heard them.
I first heard a part of this last scene in a British television film called 'Caught on a Train' (BBC, 1980). It was written by the acclaimed playwright, Stephen Poliakoff, and the first seconds of this climatic scene were played over the conversation of the two main characters. They are eating in the lounge of the Frankfurt Opera House. The female character, played by Peggy Ashcroft, mentions that Lotte Lehman is singing the version heard in the film, but I have been unable to find on here.
Wonderful climax despite some funny musical things (ex some strange staccati, accellerando's) but this is how it must sound! A wonderfyl, full-voiced MArshallin. Brava and thank you! Gwyneth is wonderful!!!!!!
dare i say it...pardon me..might be greater still if there was another welsh soprano singing the marshallin - margaret price! NOTHING wrong with jones of course
I could not find any record that Margaret Price ever sang the Feldmarchallin, but from R.Strauss, she sang in Ariadne auf Naxos. Price was most famous for her exellent Mozart-portraits!
I don't think she did also but it would be in germany if she ever sang it. It would have been great. I agree one of the most splendid Mozart and Strauss soprano.
The lovely Margaret Price did sing the Marchallin in major Opera houses although she was quoted to find the role unrealistic and rather silly... so she never recorded it as far as official recordings are concerned at least...
That said, I like Jones' Feldmarchallin so much and find so much character and individuality in her voice that I enjoy every moment of it too intensely to think of other singers at the same time.
OMG- where and when?? Do u have any existing live recording of her in this role. Let me know as I would do anything (almost) to listen to her in that role.
I agree. That opening phrase from Jones is just exquisitely sung. She had great control over her voice, whatever her detractors might say, and it shows here. By the time she really opens up the top at 3:44, I had CHILLS....just incredible singing from 3 amazing artists.
this has been the definitive Rosenkavalier from the first time that production was staged in the mid to late 1960's. And all led by Carlos Kleiber.
I studied and experienced that production and it is a never to be duplicated treasure, like seeing a 55 year old Fontaine dance, or Le Troyens at the Met under Kubelik.

I love watching Kleiber but have NO idea what he is doing with that stick. What I DO know is that the sound is great!

I die when I hear Brigitte Fassbaender's voice. She makes the most dashing Octavian I've ever seen.

This scene is set in a Beisel. That means in a cheap bar in the country side or in cheap place out of Vienna.
But the decoration is of non importance.

Lovely, lovely, and there are sparks flying between Brigitte and Lucia. Love how Fassbaender channels the 17 year old Octavian.
Anyhow, I have added a Video Response above of Percy Graingers instrumental version of the Duet.

Gwyneth Jones (Feldmarchallin), Brigitte Fassbaender (Octavian), Lucia Popp (Sophie). With 3 great singers, how could you go wrong?
This production was in 1979, a good chalenge for new singers.
