Not necessarily a lie, just misspeaking. He doesn't have a lot of scenes with her here (she's Scolari's girl) so while he met her he didn't really get to know her. It was on VOLUNTEERS that they became a couple.

And to Hanks's credit, he's always been proud of BOSOM BUDDIES, has worked with Scolari other times, and hired the BOSOM BUDDIES director Joel Zwick to direct MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING.
