This is influenced by primitive modal music (which is actually very complex vocally, like jazz). Here's an example: watch?v=_f9XYWzY_Ns. MIA is also influenced by modal music, but sings in a more chant-like, hip-hop manner. Dø approaches it in a more traditional way. Both are awesome anyway and are representatives of a trend of music that is bringing back complexity to the mainstream.
