I introduced the static grass applicator to my model railroad club last Saturday. There is concern among some that are involved with the DCC / electronics and software that there could be some side effects associated with the use of an external high voltage application on or near the track. I am doing some research in various sites not only for my education but also to confirm or ease thier concerns. Do you know of any issues or can you lead me to an answer pro or con?
We've seen no issues whatsoever - it's just artificially produced static electricity - no worse than what you get when you rub your feet on a rug and then touch the track.
If you go to the website listed, and do a bit of research, what he's doing is using a type of negative ion generator. Yes ion ray guns and ion generators are REAL, not the stuff of science fiction. Check out stuff by Robert Ianinni, for information on building these. Schematics are included. Title: Build your own laser phaser, ion ray gun and other working space age projects. It's a great book and cheap. Has the info you need on making one of these. It's just differential charge.
Great video, but how do you set up the transformer? can you use a battery? What do you do withe positive and negative terminal? Which is the one you are putting on the nail?
Which brand of grass are you using? It does not appear to have the glossy sheen that WS static grass does. Are you using one of the European brands, or something else?
What grass fibers were used in this video? This is exactly the kind of tall grass I need to model. Looks great!

what is this for?

For making tall grass in model scenes - like on a model railroad or a military model diorama.

Made from a fly swatter for about $ 3 - check it out on youtube, there's an instructional video of how to make it yourself. It's that easy...

is the nail connected to ground?
Glasairman 2 years ago
The nail *is* the ground point - you connect the grounding wire on the applicator to the nail to complete the static circuit.

wow really nice technique! I wonder how well grass like that would withstand children that can't keep their hands off your layouts?

You got to be kidding me?!

Great Video!!

Great idea!!! And of course it's a whole lot less than the Noch Grassmaster.
What I would do to add some variety is to put different length grass blades into the applicator, even differing colors like in real life.
Great modelling!

Yes, What is the power source?
chessie4155 4 years ago
The power source is a 12 volt wall transformer from Radio Shack I had in my stash.
