This is also one of my favorite transcriptions for symphonic band. I have conducted this piece many times,. It has never failed to excite players and audience alike. It's' what we call a 'War Horse" in the business. When I taught HS, it was on my revolving literature list. This assured that every student I taught got to play it. It's fun, technically challenging and most importantly teaches LYRICISM!! The final element so important , and yet seemingly ignored by so many contemporary composers.
@khl1975 : Aye, so what? It's still a damn good piece of music! Incidentally, I have never understood the snobbish disdain in which this overture has been held by some members of the critical establishment.
quiet the contrary. I used this as a compliment. I love Rossini and his overtures. Esp. the overture the italian in Algiers, la gazza ladra, semiramide etc.
@1253sokiwi I can't help it... I think he dropped it! It's because he has the baton in his right hand and with his left hand he is reaching into his tuxedo. Why do that? (It doesn't look like he has switched hands before.) Normally I would put my baton aside with the hand I'm holding it in.
i agree, this is an alright version of the piece. the orchestra im in is playing this piece for a gig in 2 weeks, and the claranet player in his solos sounds a little weak...
I heard this on KING FM some weeks back and am very grateful for the chance to listen again! Very lively!

I notice with some humor that listeners like myself cringe when someone calls this, or any other orchestral piece, a "song"!
"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" is a song--this is an overture (or a symphony, concerto, tone poem--well, you know what I mean.

Where has his baton gone at 0:34 ? :-D

haha so true
aw i love this piece i used to play this in bhyp and our conductor was always snapping batons on the edge of his stand in concerts.

@theshow2k He must have dropped it.

if you look closely.. he stuffs it inside his.. jacket

@theshow2k He put the the baton into the inside pocket of his tuxedo.

@theshow2k The only reason I can think of is there is only one pocket inside his tuxedo, so he needs to switch the baton to his left hand.
However, it is likely that he dropped it. I have really seen a conductor went too excited and the baton "flied" into the cellos!

Great performance. Thinnest brass section I've ever seen in a pro orchestra, btw.

I love this overture and I wish someone would produce the opera in my lifetime; I think it's about a pirate. Terrific performance here!

Sounds like the Bernstein version I carry around in my head, but more "orientalism" in some of the percussion. Has anyone ever done a ballet to it?
